  • Micky Dolenz Reflects on Adam Schlesinger, Talks New Monkees Live Album

Checking in on the star phone is a man who’s sold over 75 million records as one of The Monkees -- and as a solo artist!

Micky Dolenz is back on the Shannon in the Morning program to talk about his new album The Monkees Live: THE MIKE & MICKY SHOW which is out now!

It was recorded during Micky and Mike Nesmith’s 2019 tour shortly after the death of Peter Tork. The late Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne who passed away earlier this month due to coronavirus complications, produced The Monkees' previous album, Good Times!, back in 2016. That was their first new album in 25 years and charted in the top 20!

"I'm just sick to death over that," says Dolenz about the passing of Schlesinger. "Why is it always the good people? And then buttheads like me just keep going forever."

"I still think about it almost every day, Dolenz continued. "He was such a great guy, a gentleman, and funny, and so smart. And obviously an incredible producer, writer, performer. I wrote a song with him on 'Good Times!.' I just can't believe it. That's by far the closest person to me that's been affected and I think about him all the time. What a loss."

The new album features 25 hits and fan favorites spanning The Monkees' entire career from 1966’s “Last Train To Clarksville” to 2016’s “Me & Magdalena.”

Listen above as Micky discusses he's been up to during the coronavirus pandemic and plans for the future with Scott Shannon, Patty Steele, and the rest of the Shannon in the Morning crew.

  • Tony Orlando on Yellow Ribbons of Hope, New York Toughness

April 21st is an important day for Tony Orlando, because back in 1973 “Tie A Yellow Ribbon” by Dawn hit #1 and spent 4 weeks at the top of the Billboard chart, but it doesn't stop there.

"Tie A Yellow Ribbon" sold 3 million records in the US in just three weeks, and BMI says that radio stations had played it 3 million times from seventeen continuous years of airplay. Billboard also ranked it as the No. 1 song for 1973.

And in 2018, Billboard ranked the song as the 46th biggest song of all time in its issue celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Hot 100.

And all these years later, the song is still significant. Here in 2020 this song has taken on a special meaning with communities all over the country tying yellow ribbons around trees to thank front-line medical workers fighting the coronavirus.

  • Sheila E. Previews The CBS GRAMMYs Salute To Prince

Sheila E. knew Prince like no other, and she checked into the 'Big Show' with Scott Shannon and Patty Steele to share some memories of her friendship with "The Purple One."

She recalls meeting Prince in California back in the late '70s, when he was just a "baby Prince," as Scott would say, and immediately hit it off.

"We met in the bay area where I was born and raised in Oakland California, and he came there to do his first record, because he was inspired by Sly Stone and Carlos Santana. He wanted to be in that same environment and studio that they recorded."

[fembed ftype="blockquote" class="twitter-tweet" provider="twitter"][fembed ftype="p" lang="en" dir="ltr" provider="twitter"]“He was respected by so many, and he touched so many lives{*} He made music for everybody{*} And I really try to channel that when I make music{*}”

Sheila continued, "He came out to the bay and I met him when he was there, just finishing his record, he played a performance in San Francisco so I went backstage and said 'hello.' He was first starting his career, it was either '77 or '78, it was a long time ago."

Patty wondered, "Was he as electrifying in person or was kind of a quieter, calmer person?"

She says he was a soft-spoken man most of the time, "unless he was playing basketball," and other sports that got him riled up.

"It was a little bit of both," admits Sheila. "There were times he was quiet like, we all need that alone time. When it came to compete in basketball, or pool, or ping pong, or different things like that, he would get loud!"

  • Rob Thomas Talks Life Under Self-Quarantine, Finding 'The End Of The Internet'

Rob Thomas is taking the self-quarantine to a whole new level.

Rob sings songs like “Don’t Dream it’s Over” by Crowded House and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston during his “Social Distance Sessions” at home, he’s done a few of them from home and says he didn’t think he’d be able to perform in his sweat pants in front of the masses like this!

Rob says he had a bunch of odd jobs before making it in the music business, he worked as a delivery boy, making futons, a truck driver, landscaping and so much more, he says he took these jobs because he could just quit if they wouldn’t let him take off for a gig and he could get a new job the next week.

Rob Recalls hearing his song on the radio first on the “Surfer Dave” show in Orlando, and he heard his first Matchbox Twenty song on a trip from New Orleans to Dallas way back when.

Rob says the Matchbox Twenty “2020” tour will probably resume in 2021, saying “it doesn’t seem responsible” to even consider doing a show this year if allowed to.

He’s found the quarantine is helping him connect with friends and co workers better, and has something brewing with Gavin DeGraw and Chris Daughtry for his Sidewalk Angels foundation, and he’s had so much time on his hands he's actually "found the end of the internet.”
