On this episode Wes goes solo and goes over his past few episodes with Enlifted coaches Mark England, Megan Henry, and Jerika Maher. He also gives us a taste of what's to come in future episodes teasing some changes that are coming to the Shaping Success podcast. 

Wes talks about how someone can choose their words to reflect the positive. For example, one might say "I've got to go to work today." He says people can change that around and say "I get to go to work today." There are people that can't work or are having trouble finding a job. People work so they can get the stuff they need and want. Wes points out he's building a house, and without working, he wouldn't be able to get that house. 

Wes also touches on the importance of teaching someone as opposed to just doing it for them. They are given knowledge, and what they do with it is out of your control. It's possible they'll do better with that knowledge than you.  It is important to seek knowledge any way possible such as through reading. 

Time management is an important factor. What do people do with their time? Do they waste it watching TV and scrolling through social media all day, or do they manage their time in such a way that they are able to exercise, do a podcast, work, and make time for their family?  It's all about choice. People are in control of their own time. 

Another interesting topic Wes brings up is timelines. Parents and perhaps siblings are possibly the only ones that know a person from the time they are born. Anyone else a person comes across will meet them at a certain time such as 42 years old. That person will not know what happened before 42 unless that person tells him. This is why people judge others without knowing their past. If they see someone driving around in a nice car, they don't know what that person did to earn that car. They didn't see the hard work that person put in to get that car. That person saw the success but not the failures that went though before he found success.

How does one encourage interaction? For Geeg Wiles, he travels around with a 43 lb mascot named Ahab strapped to his back. Seeing Geeg with Ahab, curiosity gets the better of some people, and they come up to Geeg and ask questions. They may even come back with more questions. 

On this episode, learn how Geeg uses Ahab as a social experiment in Boise, Idaho with Wes while at The Edge Brewery to launch his beer, Ahab Beer. He sits Ahab in his own chair and waits for people to come to him. Learn how Geeg maneuvers Ahab  even while hiking! 

Ahab got his start in WWII with Geeg's Grandfather and his war buddies. For the next 8 Decades, Ahab was a motivator for people to get out there and do what they love. Geeg took over Ahab taking him everywhere. Twenty years later, he's developed quite  a following on social media of "crew" members who are a core group of people following and taking part in Geeg and Ahab's journey.  If there is something Geeg wants to do, and he needs more information or ideas, he'll reach out to the crew to see if anyone can help. 

Geeg and Ahab teach people to follow their dreams. Geeg says if he can tote around a 43 lb weight, then people can take the time to follow their passion and interact with others. " How heavy is your excuse?" Geeg asks. "Is it 43 lbs?"

oin Wes Tankersley on this episode of shaping success as he talks with Enlifted coach Jerika Maher, who specializes in relationships. She discusses how life lessons were her teacher and gave her the ability to help people. 

Jerika grew up in Vallejo, California which is a poor city near San Francisco. She talks about her struggles growing up with a young mother and an absent father and step father. She had another step father that provided for the family but didn't like or love her, and it showed. As a result, she grew up a people pleaser constantly searching for his love and approval. Jerika talks about the characteristics of the people pleaser and how they have no baseline for stress. They are searching for external validation from others . She also discusses how people pleasers are very similar to empaths. The key to breaking the cycle of people pleasing is to choose you and say "I'm worth more."

Jerika and Wes talk about how parents don't teach their kids how to interact or communicate. The kids then grow up not knowing how to communicate with their partner. 

Stay tuned when Wes and Jerika discuss different relationship patterns such as people pleasers with narcissists. This will give new insight on how to handle a narcissist.

On this episode Wes discusses today’s failure to communicate. People today do not want to face confrontation and will do whatever it takes to avoid it.  He summerizes his most recent interviews talking about how people talk to themselves and how words are used to influence people’s thinking and actions. 

Nowadays, self -checkout has become so common in every kind of store, even an auto store. Wes tells the story of his experience with lack of help and muses about how customer service has gone downhill. 

As a salesman, Wes understands the importance of being a good communicator in order to get his customers what they want. He prefers to use voice text so he can hear people’s emotions and what they are feeling.

He talks about how people want to avoid confrontation, so they resort to texting, as a result, they have no communication skills. 

In this episode, Wes goes over some of the most recent interviews discussing how people talk to themselves and how to change the negative way of thinking. 

Also, Wes talks about the victim mentality way of thinking in that it is always about what others do to you. He briefly talks about how to change that. 

Face to face communication these days is losing ground, and it’s needed to build and maintain relationships. Through these interviews and solo discussions, Wes is looking to have people think about how they communicate and make it more effective.

This week on Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Mark England comes back and continues the discussion on the impact of words and our perceptions based on those words. 

Mark starts off by saying no one talks as bad to us more than ourselves. People don’t accept it from others, so why do we accept it when it comes from our own lips?

A wins journal is done by writing down one win per day in the middle of the page about a paragraph long using complete sentences. He says kids can start their path to success by keeping a wins journal as early as five years of age. Keeping this journal in turn has them thinking they are winners. This raises psychological well-being. Kids are more confident, feel capable, and feel good enough to do things and feel good enough for other people to love them.

Mark discusses the Reticular Activating System which is the phenomenon of, for example, buying a particular vehicle then seeing that vehicle all over the place. Something in the brain deems it important. The invisible gorilla study is a study in which there are kids dressed in white and kids dressed in black. One group of people was asked to focus on the kids dressed in white, and another group was asked to focus on the kids dressed in black. A person ina gorilla costume comes out, bangs on his chest, then leaves. The people claim to have not seen the gorilla.

This phenomenon shows up in the words used such as “He is always late.” The focus is on him being late and not on the fact that there were many times he was on time. “She is never there for me” focuses on the times she wasn’t there and not on the times she was. Mark says this is referred to as Halo and Horns. People put the blame on others and absolves themselves of all blame.

There are different types of coaches. Low level coaches are vague and say things such as “be more positive” and “you need to love yourself more.” They have a one-size-fits-all mentality thinking what works for one person works for everyone. They tell people to be these things, but they don’t show or teach how. 

Mark goes over how he helps his clients.  He tells them to write down their story conversationally in complete sentences with punctuation. After that, he has them read the story out loud. Emotions come out at this time, and that is normal. The next time they read it, it is 30% slower. Then the next time,  he has them taking deep breaths after each punctuation. He calls this “getting it off your chest.” The breath unlocks, and it creates space for clarity and making better decisions not based on emotions.

On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes talks to World Champion athlete Megan Henry. 

Megan’s road to success started in college where she played field hockey and did track and field.  After college she joined the Army where she was an Army world class athlete. 

Megan and Wes discuss mindset in this episode and how it changed throughout Megan’s career. After college and basic training in the Army, Megan was recruited for bobsled, but it turns out she was too small at 5’2” and 118lbs. They instead recruited her for Skeleton which is going 80 mph down the ice headfirst.

In the beginning, her mindset for achievement was trying to be perfect down to the last detail. She tried to force the results. She paid attention to the things she didn’t want instead of what she wanted. She said she had an attachment to being in control of every detail.  She realized she needed to change her mindset to succeed. She needed flexibility to adapt to change that may happen along the way. Megan found she was not in the moment of competition when these attachments happen. She was not relaxed, which is important in Skeleton.

Megan also did weightlift competitions where she fell into the habit of the same mindset of trying to be perfect. Realizing this, she set herself up for success by letting go of the attachments.

Early in her Skeleton career, Megan developed blood clots that were diagnosed by a Pulmonologist after seeing 5 doctors for difficulty breathing.  She was hospitalized for 10 days, put on blood thinners, and went through tedious testing to make sure her blood levels were good. She was told she wouldn’t compete again, but she didn’t accept that. Using visualization and spiritual meditation, she got off the blood thinners after 8 months and began competing again.

Her goal was to make the Olympic team in Skeleton. She did not perform well and fell back into old habits with her attachment to detail.  As a result, she did not make the Olympic Team in 2022 but was an alternate. At this point she realized she needed a mindset coach to get her mind back to where it was. 

Megan says she found success and happiness despite not making the Olympic Team. She was an Army World Class Athlete, World champion, and National Champion at the Skeleton. 

Now she is a coach at Inlifted with Mark England and just graduated to become a sports psychologist. Her secret to success is pursuing a goal until completion. She learned more not making the Olympic team than if she had made it. Her success meaning is the fastest way to succeed is to make a lot of errors.

Join Wes Tankersley on this episode of Shaping Success as he talks with Brandon Miller about his affirmations for success as a muscle specialist and a baseball coach.

Brandon talks about his path to success from a Division 1 athlete to getting his Masters in Body Mechanics and working with professional athletes for the first 7 years of his career. He and his business partner have had their own exercise and therapy business for the past 22 years.

His area of expertise is in the physics of exercise. He and his business partner work with Muscle Activation Technique (MAT) and Biomechanics and have been for 12 years. Brandon works with the science of exercise and therapy versus the subjective part of it, ie how the clients feel.  For example, if a client is still feeling pain, he needs other parameters to judge if he’s doing his job and being worthwhile to his client. 

Brandon describes pain as the “check engine light” that lets someone know something is wrong. However, the pain one is feeling may not be coming directly from the source. Our society is “treat my symptom,” but Brandon’s affirmation for success is what is causing the symptom? What led to that pain or injury? Figuring that out will fix the problem.

Brandon is also a baseball coach that teaches his players mindset for achievement. He believes mindset will lead to success on the baseball field. He teaches his players about self-talk and the importance of positive self-talk. He asks them what are you telling yourself that you are not willing to tell others? With his players he discusses soft talk and how to talk better for better mindset and language.  

Goal setting is an important part of his coaching. He has the players set a goal and plan how to get there. If they have goals that seem unrealistic, he will have them create a timeline on when to reach that goal or ask them to set a goal for this year. An important factor for success and happiness that he teaches these kids is “you don’t always get what you earn.” There are other factors to consider that are out of their control. He tells them to work hard to do the best that they can do. The only way to fail is not learning from the negative experience. As long as you learn something, it is not a fail.

Brandon’s story of success is getting to know his players as a whole person and emphasizes the importance of communication. After all, sports can be used in all aspects of life.

Join Wes Tankersley on this episode of Shaping Success as interviews Mark England, the head coach of Enlifted. 

Mark describes himself as a “language geek” saying words influence us for better or for worse. His job at nlifted is to certify coaches so they can dismantle the victim mentality of his clients and teach people the power of words.

Mark’s story of success starts when he was into Jujitsu before it was called Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). He went to Thailand with aspirations to go pro, but two knee surgeries sidelined him from pursuing that goal.  He spent 10 years in Thailand thinking of himself as a loser because he lost his identity as a fighter. 

When in Thailand, he went to a spa and did cleanse programs.  Because he felt better, he went back 2 more times. The 3rd time there he met Barry Musgrave who did a Ted Talk on the power of words. Barry helps a woman consumed with a breakup look at the situation differently just by changing the words. He helped her on her road to success in dealing with breakup by changing her story to not make her the victim. 

This encounter set up Mark for success and happiness as he discovered the power of words. He realizes it’s easier for people to externalize the blame and make themselves the victim than to look within themselves for allowing the situation to happen. The key to success in changing the story is to write it down word for word in a conversational manner. The more specific the better. Once it is on paper, the words can be changed to see a different perspective.  Mark describes mindset as the story one tells himself. It can be positive or negative. 

While in Thailand, Mark made his path to success by becoming a Physical Education teacher.  In 2003, he used his mindset for achievement by buying DVDs for modality and martial arts training.  In 2006, he did a 5 day training program. In January 17, 2007, he became a pro. 

Mark gives the definition of the victim mentality as an acquired personality trait where a person tends to regard himself as the victim of the negative actions of others even in the absence of clear evidence. This is a habit one develops over time. Mark gives 3 words and their definitions of someone with a victim mentality: Projections, Negations, and Softtalk. 

Mark emphasizes the importance of writing the words on paper. Get the story externalized and out of the mind. Once it is concrete, it can be changed.

Join Wes Tankersley on this episode of Shaping Success as he continues his discussion of the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by discussing the fifth habit: Seek First to understand then to be. 

Wes gives a few scenarios as examples of this. He starts by talking about one of his customers whose been married for 55 years. They say the key to success of a marriage is compromise. When there is a disagreement, what is it worth to you? Is it worth it to fight for one point of view or better to compromise?

Wes discusses how his parents told him not to get married at 19. Back then, he didn’t listen to them and did what he wanted, but now he understands. His parents married young and had kids right away. They #struggled raising 3 kids on close to minimum wage. 

They also told Wes to go to college, get a job with health benefits and retirement. His parents wanted him to have stability. The mindset for achievement for Wes was understanding that his parents didn’t want him to struggle like they did. Wes does point out that just because he now understands what his parents meant by telling him these things, doesn’t mean he agrees with their process. Neither Wes nor his parents were wrong in their thought processes. 

Another example of this habit Wes gives is his marriage. He and his wife decided not to have kids right away. They thought it was best to save some money and get stabilized before having kids. Also getting to know one another led to success and happiness in their marriage and life with the kids. 

Wes also talks about criticism. Accepting criticism as good leads to improvement on the journey to success. He surrounds himself with good people who believe in him and help him grow. He is challenged by their point of view on various topics. The key to success and understanding is conversations among people who don’t always agree. It’s important to look at different points of view objectively. Points of view may not change, but the path to success is to seek first to understand then to be.

On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes recaps the first two habits from the book The  7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R Covey. 

Wes talks about the first habit which is being proactive. With his busy schedule, he is proactive with losing weight by shifting his schedule by working out first thing in the morning. The second habit is beginning with the end in mind. Working backwards from your goal and setting up the steps needed to reach that goal. 

Wes introduces the third habit which is putting first things first. What must be done to start the process? Wes set himself up for success by changing his diet, exercising, and seeing his doctor. He continues his path to success by planning a home gym where he plans to have the equipment necessary to reach his goal weight. 

The fourth habit is thinking win-win. The affirmation for success is a positive mindset. The glass must be half full and not half empty. If there is something Wes wants, he sets up a road to success in planning what he must do to get it. He makes his own success story by telling himself “I will have that.” Instead of “I’ll never have that.” The key to success with win-win is surrounding himself with people who support him and will help him reach that goal. In turn he will help them with their goals.

Wes also talks about social media and podcasting and how people try to bring him down. He will think about what they say and finds out by going to their pages that they are not a good source of criticism. Most of the time they are negative people who bring down other people, so they don’t have to grow.

Keep moving forward. The key is reaching people to help them succeed, and in turn he will be successful.
