You may not know the name but there’s no doubt you know his music and iconic riffs. Rob Sabino has played keyboards on tour or in the studio with many of the biggest legends in pop music:

Chic, Nile Rogers, Mick Jagger, Bryan Adams, Simon and Garfunkel, Peter Frampton, Ace Frehley, Madonna, Jeff Beck, David Bowie and many, many more.

And despite all the success and all the killer moments over his incredible career there were only two that got the hair on his arms to stand up.

Rob talks about those, and how growing up in the Bronx led to his invaluable friendship with Nile Rogers, his recording sessions with David Bowie, and how he got another one of his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame friends to join him in his music class as a guest speaker.

In this episode we meet up with Dave Manoucheri once again, this time with his guys — the Ain’t Got No Time Blues & Rock Band. Like most musicians they all have full time day jobs, so finding the time to rehearse, gig, write and record is a near-impossible task. But they do, and did for Sharkey’s Treehouse.

Dave was in the house back in April of 2019. He gave us an acoustic performance of an album he was working on called “When the Giants Fell.” That record dropped in December 2019 and his band joined him in the house to talk about it, and perform many of the tracks from it. Those songs reveal the personal journey Dave took from the devastating moment his beloved wife Andrea died unexpectedly, all the way through the trials and tribulations of suddenly having to raise his four children by himself, through the various stages of grief, to the emergence from the cold darkness to the warm light of a hopeful new chapter in their lives. This album takes you through it all.

This episode is jam packed full of tracks, mostly written by Dave but with a few tracks contributed by two other band members, Matt Retz on guitar, and Robert Sabino on keyboards.

John Cuniberti’s own site says his music career began as a 70’s rock drummer playing in Eddie Money’s first rock band, The Rockets. When the group disbanded in 1973, John turned his attention to live sound engineering. In 1975 John helped design and build a touring sound reinforcement company and soon found himself mixing on-stage monitors for Stevie Wonder.

In the early 80’s John became chief engineer at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco. There he recorded three Dead Kennedys albums and dozens of other punk, metal, and alternative bands of the era.

By the early 1990s, John received both platinum and gold records for co-producing and engineering six Joe Satriani records, including Satriani’s ground-breaking 1988 “Surfing with the Alien.” Also throughout the 90’s, John continued to produce and engineer hundreds of albums both in the US and abroad. It was during this time that John designed, manufactured and sold the first commercially available reamping device called the Reamp. He also helped design and build three Bay Area recording studios.

In 2000 John opened a CD mastering suite at the world-famous Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito. For the next eight years, John crafted his skills in the art of mastering. During his time there, John mastered over one thousand CDs for both major and independent record labels including Tracy Chapman, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Thomas Dolby, Aaron Neville, Jesse Colin Young and the Grateful Dead. In 2008 John won a Grammy for his mastering work on “Global Drum Project” by Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain.

After leaving The Plant in 2008, John built a mixing and mastering studio in his home. In this studio, he continues to work on projects for Joe Satriani, Sammy Hagar, PJ Harvey, Chickenfoot, Kevin Gilbert, the Neville Brothers, the Funky Meters, jazz guitarist George Cole and many others.

In In 2016 John began work on his YouTube channel entitled “OneMic the minimalist recording series.” In this series of eleven videos, John demonstrates how he records an entire band around one stereo microphone with remarkable results. The series has been so successful that a new set of eight videos will be recorded and filmed at Sun Studios in Memphis and Muscle Shoals in the spring of 2018.

If you’re not careful, step into a club with the SpellBreakers on stage and you might think you’ve stepped through a time portal. And that would’t be a bad thing. This six-piece band is fun, and fronted by a red hot dame who’s stage persona is reminiscent of the animated character Jessica Rabbit.

Their website says “Caneri & The Cats (formerly known as the SpellBreakers) have reinvented themselves [with their new name and band members] but still remain true to their unique blend of Neo-swing, Blues and Americana. Their blend of original music and carefully crafted covers appeals to a wide variety of audiences and is sure to keep the dance floor at a boil.”

In this, their prior iteration, the band features talented musicians Jacob Freeman on upright Bass, Mike Parykaza on Trumpet, Rachel Levinson on Sax, Dan Barnes on Guitar, Michael Dallara on Drums and Sevon Caneri on vocals.

There is a renaissance of independent guitar building happening right now. My guest in this episode of Sharkey’s Treehouse is one of those luthiers who is hand-making guitars and a name for himself as a talented artisan. Barry Grzebik (pronounced Grez-bick) has been making his own brand of instruments, Grez Guitars, for more than a decade.

In this episode we met Barry at his home in Petaluma, California, to talk about the craft of guitar making. He takes us to his wood shop and shows us how he chooses the raw wood, and slowly transforms it into a beautiful, and beautifully sounding, musical instrument. Barry has acquired many of the tools, fixtures and moulds used for making arch-top guitars from RC Allen’s shop in Southern California after Mr. Allen, a legendary guitar maker, died.

We’ll learn what wood makes a guitar valuable, sound good and look gorgeous and what makes a good guitar builder. We’ll also get to hear some examples of some of them.

This episode of Sharkey’s Treehouse takes us backstage at The Voice to meet drummer extraordinaire Nate Morton. His resume has a list of superstar performers — Cher, Madonna, Paul Stanley, Vanessa Carlton and many more. His career began after attending Berklee College of Music in Boston when he went on tour as the drummer for Faye Wong, a superstar performer from China.

Besides being drummer for The Voice band, he also has a side project with his band Fraudprophets. Their new album Poptosis will be out in June 2019 and you’ll get to hear some of those songs in this podcast; I’m honored to preview it for you here.

In this episode Nate talks about playing for The Voice, his first “big” gigs, keeping personal and professional balance and his crowning achievement — trust me when I say you will never guess what that is. He also gives us his philosophy on playing songs faithfully, note-for-note, and why he’s not being paid to play the drums.

David Luning is in the house! David’s band mates joined him in the studio for their latest cd “Restless” The Rink Studios (TRS) for us, with Ben Dubin on bass, Linden Reed on drums and Dave Sampson on guitar, and they’re a great bunch of guys.

They sat down with me at my home base in Sacramento TRS and performed a four-song set from “Restless” in front of a live audience; and we didn’t want it end.

‘Restless” was produced and engineered by Karl Derfler. His credits include Tom Waits, Dave Matthews, Mother Hips, Smash Mouth and Live among many others.

David has a lot of experience and miles under his feet in a relatively short amount of time. He attended Berkelee School of Music, he’s almost always constantly touring, and he’s an American Idol contestant. Keith Urban told him he had ”staunch originality, no one’s doing what you do…good singer songwriter, story-telling guy” and Jennifer Lopez commented on his performance saying “I love it. He has a really, really beautiful tone.”

David writes, records and performs all of his own songs and he’ll talk about his process. He’ll also talk about the music industry as it is now and how it’s a double-edged sword.

Luning is preparing to release his most dynamic and gripping collection to date, 'Restless,' and he can trace it all back to one fateful night that changed everything.

She sings, writes her own music, and plays guitar. And she was once recruited by the CIA! Oh, and did I mention she’s related to the late great Glen Campbell? Brains, talent and country music is in her genes. Miller Campbell is a ball of energy and enthusiasm who ties it all together with an infectious smile, sense of humor and sincerity. Country has a new voice forging another family legacy. Miller tells the story of how she recently found out her familial connection to Glen and why she says writing and performing country music is her destiny. After listening to her story you just may believe there’s a higher power at work here.

Campbell’s latest music can be found on her EP Sweet Whiskey. She chose to record it not in Nashville, but in her hometown of Seattle, at the now legendary London Bridge Studios, a facility that’s laid down tracks from the likes of Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam, Macklemore, Alice In Chains, Temple Of The Dog and Blind Melon.

I sat down with Miller over drinks at my home base — The Rink Studios — in Sacramento. That's also where she took the stage and played three acoustic versions of her songs.
