From building confidence and managing mistakes to handling pressure and focusing on what you can control, Pete shares practical strategies for training the mind just like any physical skill. In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, Chuck sits down with legendary hockey coach, former professional player, mindset specialist, and author Gordie Stafford. From growing up in Banff, Alberta, and playing professional hockey to building a championship culture at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, Stafford shares the experiences and philosophies that have shaped his remarkable career.
Coach Stafford dives deep into the importance of development over outcomes, building a sustainable championship culture, coachability, authenticity, and the power of incremental improvement. He also explores the mental side of adolescent athletes, reframing frustration as an opportunity for growth, and why parents and coaches should prioritize unconditional support over results.
Drawing from his book The Journey and Its Rewards: Stories and Observations from a Lifetime in Hockey, Stafford shares lessons from working with some of hockey’s greatest players, including Brianna Decker, the Lamoureux twins, and Amanda Kessel. It’s an insightful conversation about competition, selfless teammates, intrinsic motivation, and ultimately learning to enjoy the journey—not just chasing the destination.
BioOn this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, Chuck is joined by Gordie Stafford, a former professional hockey player, longtime English teacher, elite coach, author, and mindset and mental performance specialist. Born in Banff, Alberta, Gordie’s hockey journey included professional seasons in the WHL, CHL, and IHL, primarily with the Milwaukee Admirals. While playing professionally, he earned a Master’s degree in Human Development and Learning with an emphasis in Adolescent Motivation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Stafford has spent much of his career at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minnesota, one of the world’s premier hockey development programs. He joined the school in 2000 and became Director of Girls’ Hockey in 2004. Under his leadership, the girls’ program has captured 17 USA Hockey National Championships, including 10 by the U19 Prep team, while Stafford has accumulated more than 1,000 career wins in USA Hockey Girls Tier 1 competition. Today, he serves as Shattuck-St. Mary’s Mindset and Mental Performance Coach. The program’s alumni include NHL stars Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise, Nathan MacKinnon, Macklin Celebrini, and Stafford’s son, Drew Stafford, along with Olympic standouts Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux, Brianna Decker, Amanda Kessel, Blayre Turnbull, Aerin Frankel, Hannah Bilka, and countless NCAA and professional players.
Beyond championships and player development, Stafford has built his career around helping athletes develop the mindset, character, resilience, and life skills needed to succeed. Those lessons are central to his book, The Journey and Its Rewards: Stories and Observations from a Lifetime in Hockey, where he shares stories and insights on teamwork, leadership, mentorship, resilience, learning from both wins and losses, and why true success is measured by growth and effort—not simply trophies.
Stafford also shares his expertise through Mosaic Sport Psychology, working with athletes, coaches, and organizations on mindset and mental performance. A proud husband, father, and grandfather, Gordie brings decades of experience as a player, teacher, coach, mentor, and hockey parent to Sharpening Your Edge, offering a unique perspective on player development and the lessons that make the journey—and not just the destination—the greatest reward.

In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, sports dietitian Val Hannahs joins Chuck to break down what it really takes to fuel a hockey player for performance, recovery, and long-term development. From early-morning games and demanding tournament schedules to hydration, electrolytes, protein, and supplements, Val provides practical strategies that athletes and families can actually use.
They also explore the unique nutritional needs of young and female hockey players, the dangers of under-fueling during growth, and how parents can help athletes develop independence and healthy food habits. Most importantly, Val explains why nutrition shouldn’t make an athlete’s life more complicated—it should make it better.
BioVal Hannahs is a sports dietitian with 20 years of experience in sports nutrition. She has worked in a variety of clinical and sports nutrition settings and as a consultant with athletes since 2006. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and a Master’s degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion. Val has worked with athletes across a variety of sports and levels, from youth and developing athletes to those competing at the elite level, including her work with IMG Academy +, where she serves as Manager of Performance Nutrition. Over the past five years, she has focused on growing her sports nutrition private practice, with a particular focus on ice hockey athletes.
As an athlete herself and a busy mom of three athletes, two of whom play hockey, Val understands sports nutrition from both professional and real-life perspectives. She not only teaches athletes what they need to fuel but has also tested these strategies through her own training and has experienced the day-to-day realities of supporting her own athletes. She understands the demands of hockey, as well as the packed schedules, travel, practices, school, and logistics that families are balancing.
Val combines evidence-based sports nutrition with practical strategies that work in real life, helping athletes and their families build fueling habits that support energy, recovery, performance, and long-term development.

In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, two-time Stanley Cup Champion and NCAA National Champion Rob Scuderi joins Chuck and Erik to share the remarkable journey that took him from public skating sessions and ponds on Long Island to the NHL. Scuderi reflects on the evolution of the game, what it takes to endure the physical and mental grind of a championship run, and the habits, resilience, and mindset that helped him succeed at the highest level. He shares insights from his playing career, including the importance of role players, blocking shots, doing the nitty-gritty work, handling pressure, and understanding that every player has a role in building a winning team.
Scuderi also dives into what separates an NHL defenseman from everyone else, discussing defensive awareness, staying level-headed, patience in development, and the importance of being a multi-sport athlete. As a player-turned-coach and current Defense Development Coach with the Nashville Predators, he offers a valuable perspective on youth hockey development, sports burnout, team chemistry, and the transition from player to coach. Whether you're a player, parent, or coach, this episode is packed with lessons on hockey development, mental toughness, championship culture, and why developing better people is just as important as developing better hockey players.
BioRob Scuderi is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, former NHL defenseman, and one of the most respected defensive specialists of his era. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round (134th overall) of the 1998 NHL Draft, Scuderi carved out a remarkable 12-year NHL career by earning every opportunity through consistency, toughness, and an unwavering commitment to team success. He appeared in 783 regular-season NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, and Chicago Blackhawks, capturing Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh in 2009 and Los Angeles in 2012. His memorable assist on Max Talbot's Game 7 Stanley Cup-winning goal in 2009 remains one of the defining moments of his playing career.
Before reaching the NHL, Scuderi starred at Boston College, where he helped lead the Eagles to the 2001 NCAA National Championship. A Hockey East All-Rookie Team selection, three-time Hockey East Champion, and member of the NCAA All-Tournament Team, he finished his collegiate career as Boston College's all-time leader in games played with 169 while recording 70 career points. In recognition of his outstanding collegiate career, he was inducted into the Boston College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024.
Known throughout his playing career as a dependable stay-at-home defenseman, Scuderi built his reputation through elite positioning, shot-blocking, penalty killing, and the little things that help teams win championships. He consistently matched up against opponents' top players and became known as one of the NHL's premier defensive defensemen.
Since retiring in 2017, Scuderi has dedicated himself to developing the next generation of players. He currently serves as the Defense Development Coach for the Nashville Predators, where he works with NHL players and prospects to strengthen their defensive habits and overall game. He also coaches youth hockey with the Nassau County Lions 15U AA program on Long Island, sharing the lessons he learned from legendary coaches throughout his career while emphasizing not only skill development, but also character, patience, and helping young athletes grow into successful adults.
In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, Rob discusses the habits that defined his championship career, the transition from player to coach, what it takes to become an elite defender, and why creating better people is just as important as developing better hockey players.

What does it take to turn a childhood dream into Olympic gold and professional hockey history? In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, hosts Chuck and Erik sit down with Team USA Olympian and PWHL champion Hayley Scamurra to discuss the journey that has made her one of the most accomplished players in women's hockey.
Growing up on a backyard rink in Buffalo, New York, Hayley dreamed of wearing the red, white, and blue. That dream became reality with a silver medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics before reaching the pinnacle of the sport with Olympic gold at the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina. She also reflects on winning three IIHF Women's World Championship gold medals, capturing the Walter Cup with the Montreal Victoire, and becoming one of the first players to help launch the PWHL before signing with the league's newest franchise in Las Vegas.
Chuck and Erik dive into the sacrifices required to compete at the highest level, the resilience needed to overcome injuries and adversity, and how the culture inside a championship locker room can elevate every player. Hayley also shares behind-the-scenes stories from the Dream Gap Tour, discusses the rapid growth of women's professional hockey, and explains why mentorship and giving back to the next generation have become some of the most meaningful parts of her career.
Whether you're a hockey player, coach, parent, or sports fan, this conversation is packed with lessons on perseverance, leadership, teamwork, and believing in a dream long before anyone else can see it.
BioA Buffalo, New York native, Hayley has emerged as one of the most accomplished players in women’s hockey, building a career defined by perseverance, leadership, and championship success. Inspired by countless hours spent skating on a backyard rink with her father and brothers, Hayley set her sights on becoming an Olympian at just 10 years old—a dream she fulfilled when she represented Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics, earning a silver medal, before reaching the pinnacle of the sport with an Olympic gold medal at the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina. Along the way, she has also captured three IIHF Women’s World Championship gold medals and established herself as a key contributor on the international stage.
At the collegiate level, Hayley starred at Northeastern University, where she developed into one of the nation’s premier forwards. During her four-year career, she earned Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors, multiple Hockey East All-Academic Team selections, and recognition as Hockey East’s Best Defensive Forward. Her combination of skill, hockey IQ, and two-way play helped her become one of the program’s most impactful players. Following college, she was selected 10th overall by the Buffalo Beauts in the 2016 NWHL Draft and has continued to excel throughout her professional career.
Most recently, Hayley completed a historic 2025-26 season, becoming the first women’s hockey player to win both an Olympic gold medal and a Walter Cup championship in the same year as a member of the Montreal Victoire. She was originally selected by the Ottawa Charge in the inaugural PWHL Draft before helping elevate the women’s professional game through her play and leadership. This summer, she signed a three-year contract with the PWHL’s Las Vegas franchise, becoming one of the cornerstone players for the league’s newest team.
Beyond her accomplishments on the ice, Hayley is passionate about growing the game for the next generation. Through clinics, mentorship programs, and her work with youth hockey organizations, she is committed to expanding opportunities for girls in hockey and ensuring young athletes have the resources and support they need to pursue their dreams. From her beginnings on a backyard rink in Western New York to Olympic glory and professional championships, Hayley Scamurra’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work, family support, and believing in a dream from an early age.

The conversation explores the importance of balancing high expectations with empathy, building strong connections through trust and communication, recognizing signs of struggle even in outwardly successful athletes, and creating environments where young people feel supported while being challenged to grow. Dr. Corso also helps redefine toughness, explaining that true resilience comes not from suppressing emotions, but from self-awareness, emotional support, and the confidence to navigate adversity both on and off the ice.

In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, Chuck sits down with PWHL Walter Cup Champion Skylar Irving to discuss her journey from backyard rinks in Kingston, Massachusetts, to the top of professional women's hockey. Skylar reflects on how free play and a genuine love for the game shaped her development, while sharing insights into the team-first culture that helped the Montreal Victoire capture the Walter Cup. She opens up about the importance of mental health, why she chose to publicly share her own experiences, and the powerful impact of asking for help. Skylar also discusses the growth of the PWHL, her experiences navigating the draft process, and her role as a mentor to young athletes. Throughout the conversation, she emphasizes that player development is unique to each individual and reminds listeners that progress is rarely linear. This episode is packed with valuable lessons on resilience, teamwork, leadership, and finding success both on and off the ice.
BioSkylar Irving is one of the rising stars in professional women's hockey and a member of the Walter Cup Champion Montreal Victoire of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL).
A native of Kingston, Massachusetts, Irving's passion for hockey began almost as soon as she could walk. Growing up skating on a front-yard rink built by her father, she developed a lifelong love for the game that continues to drive her success today. Known as a skilled power forward with a goal-scorer's mentality, Irving's relentless work ethic and commitment to improvement helped her rise through the Massachusetts hockey ranks before starring at Northeastern University.
During her standout collegiate career with the Northeastern Huskies, Irving earned numerous accolades, including Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors in 2021-22, three selections to the Hockey East All-Academic Team, Hockey East Third Team All-Star recognition in 2023-24, Hockey East Second Team All-Star honors in 2024-25, and New England Division I All-Star honors in 2024-25. She also played a pivotal role in Northeastern's championship success, earning a spot on the Hockey East All-Tournament Team in 2025.
One of the defining moments of Irving's collegiate career came during the 2025 Beanpot Championship, where she scored both Northeastern goals in a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Boston University. Her performance earned her Beanpot MVP honors, cementing her place among the most impactful players in the tournament's storied history.
Selected 20th overall by Montreal in the 2025 PWHL Draft, Irving quickly transitioned to the professional game and helped the Victoire capture the Walter Cup during her rookie season. While adapting to the challenges of professional hockey, she has remained grounded in the mindset that fueled her journey from a young hockey enthusiast shooting pucks in her backyard to competing against the best players in the world.
Known for her love of the game, humility, and commitment to continuous growth, Irving enters the next chapter of her career focused on establishing herself as an impact player, goal scorer, and leader in the PWHL while continuing to inspire the next generation of athletes.

We sat down with Jeff Lovecchio to discuss the mindset that has shaped both his hockey career and his life: “Give More, Be More.”
From earning a spot in the Boston Bruins organization to building one of the most impactful player development programs in St. Louis, Jeff shares the lessons he’s learned through adversity, perseverance, and purpose.
Jeff opens up about battling injuries and concussions during his professional playing career, the decision to continue playing overseas, and the transition into life after hockey. He explains how those experiences ultimately led him to create GMT (Give More Training) and GMA, where he has now helped more than 3,400 athletes maximize their potential both on and off the ice.
A major focus of the conversation is Jeff’s powerful philosophy: “Be Where Your Feet Are.” He breaks down how staying fully present helped him navigate the highs and lows of professional hockey, grow successful businesses, and create meaningful relationships along the way.
We also dive into:
Whether you’re an athlete, coach, parent, or entrepreneur, this episode is packed with insight on growth, resilience, and maximizing your potential.
BioJeff Lovecchio grew up playing hockey in St. Louis during a time when the city was not considered a serious competitor by top hockey markets. Through hard work, dedication, and self-discipline, he earned a Division I scholarship at Western Michigan University. Lovecchio notes that he achieved this despite not having the most innate ability, instead making up for a lack of natural skill with total commitment to maximizing his potential.
After three years at Western Michigan, Lovecchio signed with the Boston Bruins. While he did not appear in a regular-season NHL game, he played seven pre-season games for the Bruins and was on their roster for the playoffs. He spent three years with the Bruins' AHL team before being traded to the Florida Panthers, where he played for their AHL affiliate for a season and a half. Due to sustaining multiple concussions, Lovecchio decided to move his career overseas for the sake of his longevity. Over the next six years, he played in top leagues across Italy, Norway, Austria, and Asia. This experience living in diverse cultures was instrumental to his personal development, teaching him patience, leadership, and communication skills while navigating cultural and ideological barriers.
Three years into his professional playing career, Lovecchio founded an off-ice training company called RIPT Hockey, which has since transitioned into his full-time business, GMT (Give More Training). During the 2025/26 season, GMT expanded to operate training centers for five local youth organizations in St. Louis, serving over 3,400 players with a team of four coaches. As of 2026, over 34,000 people have used some form of his online training. Beyond training, Lovecchio frequently speaks to hockey families, which led to his career in public speaking for the general public, including his first keynote engagement for a nationwide company in 2025. Additionally, in 2025, he founded GMA (Give More Advising), a program for hockey players aged 14 and older; the initial spots sold out in 24 hours. Lovecchio operates under the philosophy of "Give More Be, you will Be More," and he is dedicated to helping others realize their potential.
