Today, we see millions of people converging upon the city of Makkah. However, there was a time when the Prophet ﷺ was prevented from prostrating to Allah in the Sacred House.

Following unrelenting persecution and fear for his life, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ eventually fled the city of Makkah to Madīnah. This strenuous and burdensome journey took a number of days and marked the beginning of the Islāmic calendar. It was a miraculous journey and a watershed, not only for the Muslims, but also for the history of the entire world. It was in Madīnah that Islām gained prominence and spread to the four corners of the world. It is due to this sacred journey and the Prophet’s ﷺ unprecedented sacrifices that Islām remains with us today.

Every believer’s deeds will be judged on the Day of Judgement according to his or her sincerity of intention. In essence, sincerity of intention means to perform deeds exclusively for the sake and pleasure of Allāh. Any discrepancy in the purity of the intention can render subsequent actions void. Sincerity in intention is of paramount importance because without sincerity, the greatest of deeds are unacceptable to Allāh. In contrast, even the smallest of deeds are enhanced greatly and magnified because of pure intentions. The acceptability of deeds with Allāh will only be determined by a person’s intentions and not by their appearance, wealth or social standing.

A famous ḥadīth about this topic, which is also considered to be a foundation stone of our faith, is discussed in detail within this talk.

We are reminded that as believers we should continuously evaluate our intentions. The more fame and social standing one has, the greater fear of ostentation there is and thus the greater need to review and purify intentions at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of deeds. One’s charity and good deeds should not be destroyed with imposition, pride or boastfulness.

Human beings are unique as compared to the rest of creation because our state is always fluctuating. As our state is not static, it means we can rise to the spiritual heights of angels or fall from grace to be worse than cattle.

However, the unique and distinctive feature infused within humans as appose to all other creatures is the rūḥ (spirit). True essence of life is founded through the rūḥ rather than the body and it requires nourishment similar to the body. Concentration on the body has resulted in negligence towards the rūḥ, resulting in humans sharing similar characteristics with cattle.

The rūḥ being celestial and divine requires divine nourishment. For this reason, Ramaḍān and all its teachings have been made obligatory to divert attention from all other distractions and thereby revive the spirit and allow it to blossom and rise. Ramaḍān is a spiritual month since it gains its significance from the divine Qur’ān.

This talk outlines the ultimate objective of Ramaḍān and how to truly appreciate this blessed month in a way that it creates a lasting momentum throughout the year.

For Muslims, the Qurʾān is not a written tradition as much as it is an oral tradition. It may not be the most published or bestselling book in the world yet it has a unique honour and distinction of being the most widely memorised and read book, not only today but throughout history. Miraculously, it has been preserved from heart to heart. Allāh has vowed to preserve its words, method of recitation, meaning and messages.

Part of the preservation of the Qurʾān and undoubtedly, part of its miracle is the memorisation of the Qurʾān by millions of children throughout the world. Along with its memorisation, there are great blessings in learning its meanings and acting upon its teachings. In fact, one who endeavours to do this is not only preserving the Qurʾān and its meaning but he is also considered the best of people as the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘The best amongst you is one who learns the Qurʾān and teaches it’.
