Show Notes:
Introduction to the podcast
Introducing Jason to the show
The first time Giovanna talked to Jason, she told him, “Jason, I just got to tell you, I love you and you are basically me with a penis”
Jason’s book, Prison Break: Vanquish the Victim, Own Your Obstacles, and Lead Your Life, is probably the best title for personal development
Prison Break is all about Jason’s belief that in any given moment, we have the choice to approach any challenge as a prisoner of chance or as a self-leader
“Prison Break and the whole distinction between being a self-leader and a prisoner is in no way saying perform right or wrong”
If you’re in a system that’s not working, try self-leadership
There’s nothing permanent and pervasive in being a self-leader
The book is a literal toolbox of how to lead
Radical responsibility is what Giovanna calls self-leadership
Language is such a HUGE thing
The biggest difference for Jason is when he stopped using “mastery” as a noun, but as a verb, instead
Transformation is both instant and a lifelong process
One chapter that stands out for Jason, “Your Intuition is Drunk”
Jason has been jaded by intuition
He realized something was off when he left the corporate world
Jason was in his first startup when realized he was having issues with intuition
His wife noticed he was going through job ads
When Jason is at a low point, he tends to look for jobs
Your intuition is directly tied to your mind and quality of thinking
It takes time to sober up and it’s the same with intuition
We get down on ourselves, but we’re actually programmed in stressful circumstances to not have access to our intuition
An event that would normally be considered small can be debilitating
It takes 30 secs - 1 minute for Jason to do the “snow globe meditation”
Our feelings never get it wrong – they are a reflection of our mind
Notice what’s going on first
Any emotion that comes up as heavy is an indicator of something
The single most empowering thing for Giovanna is to highlight what the behavior is and start taking control of life
Chapter: Vanquish the Victim
“The victim is NOT the enemy – the victim is just less effective way to be”
Vanquish the victim is a state of mind
A prisoner lives with an “all or nothing” mentality
It’s moment to moment – an ongoing process
Stop thinking there’s a big break that’s going to happen
It’s one at a time – you don’t stockpile self-leadership
It’s much more about how you respond in the moment
Small mental wins are important to address
Jason on Wu Tang Clan
In 1999, Jason ended up with a group of people who wanted to create music
Jason was with them for 6 years
There was a level of presence, sincerity, and professionalism that separated them from other groups
Mastery as a verb vs mastery as a noun
Giovanna shares her story from being an assistant cruise director to becoming a coach
What helped Jason most was when he started to become more open
The weird things that happen in your life might actually be the things that connect you to others
Empathy is what Jason uses to serve others
“Your greatest struggle is your greatest gift”
Anything you’ve struggled with or developed as defense mechanism can be owned, leveraged, and used as a gift to serve the world
Being yourself is self-leadership
“The pieces of you that can be of service is the real, authentic you”
Jason mentions about his client who wanted to make meetings fun
Authentic vulnerability vs vulnerability vomit
Jason is a spiritual pragmatist
Don’t go up on the stage, “announcing” what you’ll do
Vulnerability for the sake of it, is annoying
There’s a lot to be said for sharing your challenges
Jason realized what was wrong—he was doing his “healing” in public and this made it difficult for him to share
Sharing for a reason that wasn’t pure is NOT being authentic
If you have something to share, share it without expecting to receive anything in return
It’s wonderful to find people with whom you could share
Jason shares about his private group’s shame circle
Giovanna talks about having a similar sharing experience

3 Key Points:
Mastery isn’t a place you get to, it’s an ongoing process.
Your greatest struggle is your greatest gift—your difficulties can lead to you discovering and developing your greatest strengths.
If you’re going to be vulnerable in public, share without expecting to receive anything in return.
