  • 222. Timely advice

RJ and Sue recently returned (bearing gifts!) from an epic, comprehensive tour of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Gaspésie. These are destinations at least one other Shed Dog has long talked about seeing but never done. Now, with this episode, that Dog can just steal their itinerary and enjoy a great trip without all that pesky planning. You can, too! Here in episode 222 we also get excited about a new-look “Hockey Night in Canada” returning after all for its 90th season, and then we turn around and give Premier David Eby a not so gentle rebuke for calling the upcoming election. Mr. Eby, but you’ve really put us in a spot here. PJ’s daughter Jenna gets a great piece of travel advice for her upcoming European adventure, and since we recorded on the very day of the national holiday, we try to take stock of our nation’s progress on the goals and values that the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation was established to promote. So, yes, we’re once again all over the place and hope you’ll join us!

  • 221. Little Red... necks

KJ gives us a fascinating—and a little sad—report from a recent road trip to Saskatchewan with “Little Red Warrior and His Lawyer” in which we find out that (a) that provincial government is indeed provincial, but that (b) they are willing to put their security detail in direct and evidently amusing contact with subject matter the government regards as alarming. It’s 1960 out there once again, folks. Still, we get past that and manage to give you yet another million-dollar idea, some Snappers, a health report and a satisfying review of a concert from the Guess Who. It’s waves on the shore all the way here, soothing and satisfying, so relax and join us for a little escape!

  • 220. Racy Odyssey

We felt that we are not having enough of an impact on your dreams, and so in this episode, along with Listener Mail and a brief visit from another famous actor, we bring you: Our Worst Natural Enemies. Now, not only do we remind you of all those desperate childhood phobias you spent years conquering, but we also let you know which of nature’s many denizens you really should have been concerned about. To offset this potentially unsettling conversation, we also try to shed some light on the Immaculate Conception, sort of a Who’s Who of the parents of Christianity—sort of. It’s a worthwhile listen for breaking out of those regular day to day thought trains you’ve been riding, so enjoy, and let us know where you end up!

  • 219. Dog-wear-o-types

Even by our Olympian standards for variety we cover a lot of ground in this episode, from surprising and useful info about cooking pots (of all things), to linocuts, to renewable energy, to theatre, to emails from faithful and persistent listeners, to famous Irish art… a simmering potpourri of opinion and amusement and information awaits. Be bold, and dive right in! Or be cautious and keep your hand on that pause button—all the choices are good ones with your favourite Dogs.

  • 218. Polished walnuts

In this episode we delve into thespiana, zooming in on auditions for shows, people working in theatre, and bits of life behind the curtain (eg., how do you summon genuine tears three shows a day for weeks at a time?). There are also some favourite chestnuts here like travel notes from far-flung places, KJ’s famous Snappers, and even Buddy the dog. We do manage to keep our conversation about K-dramas very short and vague, so no fears there. We’re sure that you’ll find amusement and edification here, so join in, walnuts in hand, and enjoy the flow.

  • 217. Picture three dogs

As in many of our other conversations, this episode touches on various AIs and how we are experiencing them, and also as in many other conversations, we end up talking about particular conditions affecting how one or the other of us experience our lives; remember misophonia, that deep aversion to the sounds of chewing and swallowing? Changes in hearing and vision? Well, in this episode we talk about another one, whose name reminds me of “Fantasia”. It’s cool. We also have KJ’s famous Snappers, a little Listener mail, a look back at the TV we watched as young pups, and a preview of a very exciting offer on a chance to acquire a famous old piece of Canadiana (and Doggiana), KJ’s vintage 1957 cigarette machine! Oh yes, it’s true—listen and find out about it!

  • 216. Lucy goes to Cannes

If you’re the kind of person who has ever idly (or, hey, obsessively, no judgment) wondered much of anything about the Canadian movie industry, this is your episode. Lucy McNulty, daughter of Shed Dog movie star immortal KJ McNulty, joins us for a lively and very informative conversation about producing films in Canada. Under KJ’s industry-savvy interviewing skills, we get to hear how the Canadian industry relates and compares to other nations, how to transition from being an actor to being a producer, how funding is obtained and distributed, how deals are made at Cannes, how various projects that Lucy has been working on have fared, the impacts of AI on the industry, and so much more. On the side, the Dogs receive a rather scathing review of our sought-after business cards and we even wedge in a million dollar idea. All you’ll need after this is a beret or a Ron Howard ball cap!

  • 215. Binocular vision dysfunction

IIt’s true that Episode 215 involves, in part, various surprising health issues that we have been preparing for our whole lives. It’s also true that, like you, we have a whole bunch of stuff going on that those issues can’t disrupt: KJ’s winning of a Union of BC Performers Award, RJ’s attention to disaster preparedness and fascination with Crying Karen, and PJ’s ongoing and flagrant violation of one traffic rule at the Willingdon overpass at Highway 1. You will certainly find relatable conversation and worthwhile information here, so dig in and enjoy!

  • 214. The fourth wall

Episode 214 is a multifaceted wander through shows we have liked, especially Fleabag, a major family announcement, a visit from KJ’s actor son Dylan, more great listener mail, a life changing cookbook and more and more and more.  We have news on ticket pricing, and cover hopeless donations, the ones that make the neighbours angry because it’s super clear they are things that people were too cheap to take to the dump so they let the city pick it up instead. It’s us, in other words, having the kinds of conversations we have. Join the conversation anytime.

  • 213. Bullet Time

This episode covers a number of movies, including some behind-the-scenes on how the most famous scene of The Matrix was accomplished. In addition there’s exciting news about accessing a thermal source that could have a profound positive impact on energy consumption and climate change: a new way to access geothermal power. There are warm moments about our children’s doings, and we hear about a very inflammatory way to inflate a tire. But…well, really, the majority of the episode is about movies we’ve been watching and enjoying. Have a listen and let us know what you think!
