An excellent book for emerging readers. Wonderful photographs, too.
This is an excellent book in which children can explore the world of animal biology and science
If you look closely at some animals they aren't covered in fur, but rather in shells. Armadillos, crabs, clams, and turtles are all examples of them. A "shell is the hard outer covering on an animal's body." If you've ever seen a turtle peeking out of its shell as it walks along a log you can easily see the difference between its skin and its body. There are different kinds of shells. If you've been on a beach and collected some, many are smooth, while other "shells are bumpy."
One important reason that animals have shells is to keep them safe and help them hide from predators. If you look under the coral in one of the pictures in this book a "turtle is hard to see" because it blends in with the ocean floor. In this book you'll learn that there are many different sized shells, how tortoise shells grow as it grows, how some animals shed their shells, and you'll learn that "hermit crabs do not grow their own shells."
This is an excellent book in which children can explore the world of animal biology and science. As a beginning science book the print is large and unfamiliar words such as "shed" are printed in bold lettering and defined in the glossary. Each page has a clearly defined photograph that identifies the topic being discussed. For example, when the statement "Lobsters shed old shells and grow new ones" is made, there is a large, bold photograph of one shedding its shell. In the back of the book is a short index, a pictorial glossary, hints on collecting seashells, and some facts about them. This is one of five "Body Coverings" books in the First Step Nonfiction Series, a solid beginning nonfiction science series for the young student.
