Pastor Joey and Pastor Rob discuss the equal but different gender roles in a biblical marriage. Yesterday they discuss wives... today is the husbands' turn.

HUSBANDS . . .

The command for husbands is to love their wives.

Ephesians 5:25 (NLT) For husbands, this means love (agapao) your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her.

A. The standard is for a husband to love his wife the way Christ loved His bride (The Church).

• Christ’s love was a sacrificial love.

Ephesians 5:25 (NLT) . . . love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her.

o Sacrificial love gives because the recipient needs it, not because they deserve it.

Romans 5:8 (NIV84) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

o A husband is commanded to love his wife sacrificially because it is his assigned role and function and the example that Christ set. It is ultimately a decision.

Four Practical Ways to Love Your Wife as Christ Loved the Church:

o Put her needs before your own needs.

Sacrificial love surrenders its own preferences for another.

o Pray for her.

o Pay attention to her.

o Be faithful to her.

• Christ’s love was a sanctifying love. (to make holy)

Ephesians 5:26 (NIV84) to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

o Sanctifying love in marriage forgives and does not hold grudges.

Ephesians 4:32 (NIV84) Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

o Sanctifying love in marriage will encourage intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth.

Is your wife more like Christ because she is married to you, or in spite of you?

• Christ’s love was a caring love.

Ephesians 5:28 (NIV84) In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

o A husband should love his wife because she is a part of him, because the two are one.

SUMMARY:

What does it mean to submit? To give oneself up to somebody.

What does it mean to love? To give oneself up for somebody.

Marriage as presented in Scripture is between a biological man and a biological woman and intended to be for life.

WIVES . . . .

1. The command for wives is to submit to their own husband.

Ephesians 5:22 (ESV) Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

A. The meaning of the word, submit, is a military term and it means to arrange or rank under.

• The main idea is the relinquishing one’s rights to another person.

• The idea of submission is not subservience but of willingly following another’s leadership.

1 Peter 3:1 (ESV) Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives,

• When a wife submits to her husband, it is an act of obedience and worship.

Ephesians 5:22 (ESV) Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

B. Paul identified wives in an unqualified manner which makes the command apply to every wife.

C. Her own husband implies the mutual possessiveness of the marriage relationship.

Genesis 2:24 (NIV84) For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

1 Corinthians 7:4 (NIV84) The wife’s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband’s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.

• It’s a reminder that there is absolute equality in a marriage, even though the husband and wife have different roles or functions assigned by God.

2. The reason wives are to submit is because God has delegated authority to the husband to rule over and guard the family.

Ephesians 5:23 (NLT) For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church.

A. Paul used the example of Christ being the head of the church as an example of the marriage structure.

Colossians 1:18 (NIV84) And he is the head of the body, the church . . ..

• Being a leader in Christ’s Kingdom means being a servant!

B. What does submit in everything mean?

Ephesians 5:24 (NIV84) Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

• It means every area of life but not in matters that are sinful or in opposition to Scripture.

BIBLICAL AUTHORITY & SUBMISSION

1. There are no distinctions in matters of worth, value and spiritual privilege, all are equal.

Galatians 3:28 (The Message) In Christ’s family there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with Jesus Christ.

2. There are, however, distinctions in matters of function and roles.

A. Authority is a measure of spiritual dominion.

• The purpose of authority is to rule over and to guard over.

Genesis 1:26 (NIV84) Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

B. God has given a structure of authority that enables the functions and roles He has assigned.

Romans 13:1 (NIV84) . . . The authorities that exist have been established by God.

C. Spiritual authority is never assumed, it is always delegated from one who already has authority.

• God has all authority. (Genesis 1:1; Colossians 1:15-20)

Colossians 1:16 (NIV84) For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

• God delegated authority to Jesus.

Matthew 28:18–19 (NIV84) Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

• Jesus delegated authority to His followers.

Luke 10:19–20 (The Living Bible) And I have given you authority over all the power of the Enemy, and to walk among serpents and scorpions and to crush them. Nothing shall injure you! However, the important thing is not that demons obey you, but that your names are registered as citizens of heaven.”

o When authority is delegated, there is also accountability to the one who gave it.

o Submission to authority is absolute, but obedience requires alignment with Scripture.
