Most of us couldn’t name the sheriffs of major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, or Washington, DC, and yet you’ve likely heard of Joe Arpaio. He served as sheriff of Maricopa County in Arizona from 1993 to 2017 and was known for his controversial immigration crackdowns.
Today on the show, journalists Terry Greene Sterling and Jude Joffe-Block tell the story of Arpaio’s rise and fall as sheriff, along with other insights from the reporting in their new co-authored book, Driving While Brown: Sheriff Joe Arpaio versus the Latino Resistance.
Terry Greene Sterling is affiliated faculty and writer-in-residence at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University and editor-at-large for the Arizona Center of Investigative Reporting. She is the author of Illegal: Life and Death in Arizona’s Immigration War Zone (Lyons Press, 2010) and co-author of Driving While Brown: Sheriff Joe Arpaio versus the Latino Resistance (UC Press, 2021).
Jude Joffe-Block joined The Associated Press in 2020 as a reporter and editor working in both English and Spanish on the news verification team.
