It was just twenty four hours before the commencement of The Battle of the Marne In the first winter of World War 1. Holmes and Watson found themselves in the front seat of an army staff car. They were taken to General Morris’s Headquarters four miles from the front line. The General’s brother Maitland and his wife, both famous Shakespearian actors, accompanied them. They were to give a performance for the troops that evening. But shortly before the performance it is discovered that the General’s brother has mysteriously disappeared.
