The story begins in 1889. Holmes and Watson are in Vienna because Holmes has been engaged in important investigations. The case has just concluded and Holmes is playing his violin whilst Watson makes notes about the investigation when there is a knock at the door. It is a female German pianist. She is being blackmailed by a Hungarian painter. He knows a secret about her and she wants Holmes to get her out of her horrible predicament.
