From an Indian city 200 miles north of Calcutta in 1894 Sherlock Holmes received an urgent summons from the Maharaja. In 1750 the first white elephant was given to his family with the legend that the Maharajah’s rule would be happy healthy and successful only as long as the elephant should flourish. If the animal were to die then the reign would come to an end and the Maharaja was doomed to a sudden death.
