As transformational leaders, we often hear and use the term holding space. But what does it mean? In this week's Shift the Field TV podcast, I discuss the term "holding space."
First, it is essential to define how I define transformation. Transformation is seeing a hidden truth and creating a new awareness that permanently shifts how we show up and interact with life. This energy pattern or limiting belief is making all our decisions. Once we are aware of it, we can determine if it serves us or if it needs a new job that is more productive and fruitful.
So what is holding space, and what is it not? One way people interpret holding space is that we take on our client's problems and transform and transmute them ourselves. The problem with that is it is depleting. While taking on all their burdens, we deplete our energy, which can become unsustainable. It does not create a new awareness or permanent shift.
What are we holding space for, with the goal being transformation? We are holding space for our clients to be present with their truth about how they have been being that no longer serves them. As transformational coaches, we train to be there for them to become present to their new truth with complete nonjudgment and love.
Our job as transformational leaders and coaches is to increase our capacity to be with discomfort, desire, unmet needs, and longing so our clients can discern whether or not their being still serves them.
