God wants you to love Him with all your heart, not just a part of it. He’s looking for men and women whose hearts are completely His, and who are willing to make a difference.
When fear shapes our lives, safety becomes our god. We worship the risk-free life. The fear-filled cannot love deeply because love is risky. They cannot give to the poor because benevolence has no guarantee of return. The fear-filled cannot dream wildly. What if their dreams fail?
No wonder Jesus wages such a war against fear. In Matthew 8:26 “Jesus got up and gave a command to the wind and the waves, and it became completely calm.” The sea became as still as a frozen lake, and the disciples were left wondering, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (vs. 27 NCV) What kind of man, indeed. Turning typhoon time into nap time, silencing waves with one word.

Why did the church move from singing only Psalms to writing and singing hymns—and was that shift faithful or dangerous?
In this episode, Michael and Zach trace the history and theology of Christian hymnody, from the psalm-saturated worship of the early church to the rise of Christ-centered hymns, the Reformation divide, the golden age of hymn writing, and the modern praise movement. Along the way, we examine why hymns emerged in the first place, how they were used to teach doctrine and defend orthodoxy, and what was gained—and lost—as worship music changed over time.
This is not a nostalgia tour or a critique for its own sake. It’s an attempt to answer a deeper question: what do our songs do to us? If worship forms belief, affections, and theology, then the church must think carefully about what it sings. Psalms anchor us in God’s Word. Hymns teach us to confess Christ clearly. Songs, for better or worse, shape the kind of Christians we become.

I know someone who was hurt deeply by an abusive church experience. I shared with them the message of forgiveness found in Matthew 18. But I wonder if you have any other thoughts on forgiving people who have hurt you? A lady at my church keeps telling me that the Holy Spirit has new messages for me. She is scaring me, but at the same time, I wonder if I'm missing out on hearing from God! How do I keep my young children interested in Jesus?
