In this episode, Michael Sherlock provides actionable advice on how to identify and overcome obstacles that may be hindering your progress towards your goals. By examining four key areas—time and organization, external factors, support systems, and personal actions—Michael helps listeners gain clarity and make effective changes to achieve their objectives.
Assess whether you are dedicating sufficient time and effort to your goals. Ensure your actions are well-organized and purposeful. If you’re not sure, use the early part of the quarter to make adjustments. Effective time management and organization are crucial to achieving success.
Determine if others are affecting your ability to reach your goals. Consider whether you rely on others to complete certain tasks or require their buy-in for your success. Evaluate if you’re receiving the necessary support or if there’s a need to address gaps in collaboration or communication.
Recognize the importance of external support in achieving your objectives. Reflect on whether you have sought advice or assistance from colleagues, mentors, or peers. Consider how reaching out for guidance could benefit your progress and whether fear or hesitation is holding you back.
Analyze what actions you are personally taking or not taking that might be hindering your success. This might include selfcare practices like meditation, seeking mentorship, further training, or improving personal organization. Self-reflection and awareness are essential first steps in addressing and overcoming personal barriers.
Quotes:
“Ask yourself, ‘What’s really in my way?’ and evaluate it through the lenses of time, others, support, and personal actions.”
“Self-reflection is the first step toward overcoming obstacles and achieving success.”
Reflect on your current goals and assess these four areas: time and organization, the impact of others, the support you have or need, and your personal actions. Identify any obstacles and make a plan to address them. Share your insights or seek advice if needed to stay on track with your objectives.

In this episode, Michael Sherlock guides listeners through a reflective exercise to clearly define and understand their goals for the upcoming quarter. By examining personal motivations, business benefits, and broader impacts, Michael helps you align your objectives with both personal satisfaction and professional success.
Take a moment to clearly articulate what you want to achieve by the end of the quarter. Whether it’s a major milestone or a segment of a larger goal, writing it down and reading it out loud can help solidify your focus.
Question 1: Why is this goal important to you?
Understand why achieving this goal matters to you personally. Is it tied to career advancement, financial gain, or personal fulfillment? Clearly define the importance of the goal in your context.
Question 2: What is your personal, selfish reason for accomplishing this?
Explore your personal motivations behind the goal. It’s okay to acknowledge personal benefits and desires, such as increased income, recognition, or personal growth. Recognizing these reasons can help you stay motivated.
Question 3: What are the business benefits to achieving this goal?
Determine how your goal aligns with business objectives or contributes to organizational success. Whether it’s improving sales, enhancing company performance, or contributing to a nonprofit’s mission, clarify how achieving this goal impacts the business or organization.
Question 4: What is the altruistic or broader benefit of achieving this goal?
Reflect on how your goal contributes to the greater good or benefits others. This could involve improving your industry, helping your community, or making a positive impact on society.
Quotes:
“Be very clear on why you need to accomplish this objective in the next three months. It’s not just about the end goal but the process and purpose behind it.”
“Everyone has a personal, selfish reason for their goals. Acknowledge these reasons—they are valid and can be a powerful source of motivation.”
Take a few minutes to write down your goal for the next quarter. Reflect on the four questions outlined: Why is this goal important to you? What are your personal motivations? What are the business benefits? And how does achieving this goal contribute to the greater good? Use these reflections to guide your actions and stay focused on achieving your objectives.

In this episode, Michael Sherlock delves into Chapter Four of the Operation Fred series, titled "Mama Turns the Table." Join us as Michael recounts her evolving relationship with Fred, the neighborhood stray cat, and the emotional journey that unfolds as she attempts to win Fred's trust.
Michael eagerly anticipates Fred’s daily breakfast visits, feeling like a kid on Christmas morning. Penelope joins the excitement, signaling Fred's arrival with her meows. Michael’s growing frustration stems from Fred’s apparent lack of reciprocal affection, leading her to anthropomorphize Fred, desiring more than just Fred’s reliance on the food.
On July 4, Michael decides to test Fred's trust by changing the routine. Instead of immediately bringing out Fred's food, Michael prepares a special setup: a cushion, coffee, and treats, placing Fred’s food farther away from the door to force him to come closer. Michael’s goal is to get Fred accustomed to her presence and potentially form a bond.
Fred initially reacts with confusion and caution. As Michael remains calm and patient, Fred gradually overcomes his fear, approaching the food despite the unusual setup. Fred’s hunger drives him to tolerate Michael’s presence, and he eventually begins to eat while Michael sips coffee and moves slowly.
The strategy works—Fred eventually moves closer, cautiously eating while Michael stays still and calm. Michael’s patience pays off as Fred starts to feel more secure, and even begins to relax on the porch.
As Fred becomes more comfortable, he starts to eat more slowly and even relaxes on the porch, demonstrating a newfound trust. Michael engages Fred in a game of tossing treats, further strengthening their connection. Despite mosquitoes and discomfort, Michael persists, deeply moved by the experience and feeling a profound connection with Fred. This moment becomes emotionally significant for Michael, who draws parallels to her previous experiences with handfeeding dolphins in Australia.
Michael reflects on the success of the morning and plans to integrate Fred into their home. However, she faces internal conflict, fearing that changes might drive Fred away, reminiscent of past difficulties with her son. Despite Jeff’s reassurances, Michael feels the pressure of ensuring Fred’s safety and wellbeing, given upcoming work trips.
Key Takeaways:
Building trust with a wary animal takes patience, creativity, and consistency.
Emotional connections can form in unexpected ways, deepening our understanding of both ourselves and the animals we interact with.
The experience of caring for an animal can evoke powerful, reflective moments akin to other profound life experiences.

Today, we dive into Chapter 3 " titled “May I Have This Dance?” In this chapter, Michael shares the evolving relationship with Fred, the stray cat who turned their daily routine into a dance of patience and persistence.
Michael shares how Fred, a stray cat, initially appeared on the other side of the glass door, sparking a cautious “dance” of trust. Despite Fred's uncertain gender, the name "Fred" was chosen and stuck. Michael reflects on the significance of naming and how it created a bond.
The cat's unpredictable visits and the challenge of getting Fred to eat were just the start of their unique relationship.
Michael’s first attempts to feed Fred while she was also on the porch were met with hesitation and quick escapes. Over time, Fred began to trust the presence of Michael, which gradually helped him accept meals and this showed signs of improvement in their relationship.
Michael adapted the feeding strategy to build trust, leaving smaller portions to encourage Fred to stay longer. Fred’s behavior started to change; he began to lounge and groom on the deck, indicating growing comfort.
The anxiety of missing Fred on some mornings was palpable.
Michael’s relief and joy upon Fred’s return, particularly after he went missing for a few days, highlighted the emotional investment in this evolving relationship.
Despite Fred’s growing strength, he continued to avoid drinking from the water bowl, raising concerns about his health and habits.
Michael, with help from TNR (trap neuter return) expert Joyce, planned to capture and care for Fred, aiming to integrate him into their home.
From Fred’s viewpoint, the transition from scavenging to receiving regular meals improved his strength and confidence. Michael is now focused on capturing Fred for further care and potentially making him a permanent part of their lives.
The ongoing challenge of balancing the needs of Fred and Penelope, the resident cat.
