  • EP547 | My Word Finds You
    ShopTalk Podcast – EP547
J and Dame are back for another week of ShopTalk! This week, the guys kick things off discussing Black American language, Detroit slang, and how the same words can mean completely different things depending on how you say them.
The conversation shifts to hip-hop as they debate Jay-Z's HBO series, revisit the Biggie vs. Jay-Z conversation, and discuss whether today's hip-hop commentators really understand the culture they're covering. Plus, Dame takes a trip down memory lane with G-Unit, Tony Yayo, and some questionable fashion choices.
Later, the guys discuss a viral neighborhood dispute over trash cans, the death penalty, botched executions, and whether the government should have the authority to decide who lives and dies.
They also touch on television, gun legislation, and the upcoming 12-hour ShopTalk Halloween livestream on October 31st.
Another week of laughs, debates, and the usual ShopTalk foolishness.

  • EP545 | Tune - Up Fight
    ShopTalk Podcast – EP545
J and Dame are back for Episode 545, kicking things off with restaurant talk, relationships, old memories and why sometimes you don’t realize you were living in the “good old days” until they’re gone. The guys also get nostalgic about old photos, Polaroid cameras and the pictures and memories we’ve managed to hold onto over the years.
Later, they announce plans for a ShopTalk Halloween Pod-a-Thon, talk about The Drop, Detroit’s unique Black culture and the food that comes with it, before getting into the questions surrounding the Nolan Wells case and a controversial Converse ad.
Plus, there’s plenty of Detroit food talk, Nike and sneaker conversation, and the usual random ShopTalk detours.

  • EP544 | The Devil Don’t Need An Advocate
J and Dame are back for another week of ShopTalk. This week, Dame reflects on approaching the one-year anniversary of his open-heart surgery and unexpectedly running into the surgeon who performed it.
The guys also get into a hung jury and the justice system, how much money it would take to give up a guaranteed Lions Super Bowl, and how the internet has changed our perception of what counts as “a lot of money.”
Later, the conversation turns to hip-hop, Detroit, community responsibility and accountability. J and Dame discuss childhood trauma, making excuses for bad behavior, faith, and the point where understanding why someone acts a certain way doesn’t remove their responsibility for what they do.
Plus, J gives an update on his photography giveaway, and the guys celebrate some good news that arrives during the recording.
Another week of laughs, real conversations and the usual ShopTalk detours.

  • EP543 - Im The Blackest In Here
    ShopTalk Podcast – EP543
This week on ShopTalk Podcast, J and Dame are back for episode 543, starting with Spider-Man, the multiverse and the realization that maybe the two of them are just alternate-universe versions of each other.
From there, the guys get into Lil Durk being found not guilty on the murder charge and what his first music after getting out could sound like. That leads to Brian Steel, the attorney who represented both Durk and Young Thug, and a debate about just how much elite legal representation costs when your freedom is on the line.
Then it’s time for a Detroit music debate: T Grizzley’s “First Day Out” vs. Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares.” J and Dame debate which record is actually better, whether being from Detroit makes them biased and where hometown pride ends and personal taste begins. They also get into Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and what happens when one song becomes permanently attached to an artist, a city or a moment in time.
The conversation shifts to Kanye West, apologies and reconciliation. After Kanye’s apologies to people he’s publicly fallen out with, the guys question why anyone would criticize somebody for attempting to make amends. An apology doesn’t require the other person to forgive you or restore the relationship, but if you know you’ve hurt somebody, shouldn’t you still try to make it right?
That leads into one of the biggest conversations of the episode: Fat Joe and his continued use of the N-word. J questions why Joe seems to feel entitled to the word even after people from the community he says he loves have told him they find it offensive. The guys discuss culture, identity, familiarity and the difference between physically being able to say something and having a relationship with a community that makes it yours to use.
Later, J and Dame turn their attention toward grifters. From people using religion and politics for attention to fake podcast clips, internet personalities, MLM schemes and people suddenly becoming financial experts whenever there’s money to be made, the guys talk about recognizing when somebody is selling an image instead of something genuine.
That conversation eventually turns toward Christianity itself. J and Dame discuss how extreme voices and prosperity preachers can become the public face of Christianity while ordinary churches and pastors quietly serving their communities receive far less attention. J also looks back on growing up in Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Sunday school with his parents and unexpectedly discovering what became of the building where some of those childhood memories were made.
To close, Dame tells a story about watching a simple disagreement at a gas station almost immediately turn into a confrontation. It raises a bigger question about whether people have simply become less patient, less friendly and less tolerant of one another — and whether that trajectory can actually be reversed.
Dame also takes a moment to remember his friend Gary, a longtime friend from high school who recently passed away.

  • EP542 - The Praying Mantis
This week, J and Dame are back with another episode of ShopTalk, and they’re doing it live for First Fridays.
The episode starts with the realities of homeownership as Dame talks about an unexpected $1,500 AC repair, needing a new roof and why owning a house will have you questioning whether you want to own one at all. But things take a turn when J tells the story of a praying mantis that somehow stayed on his car through an entire day, severe storms, freeway speeds and eventually a police stop before disappearing once he made it safely home.
That leads into a deeper conversation about signs, protection, faith and the things we can’t always explain. Dame shares experiences surrounding his open-heart surgery, a vivid dream involving his mother and moments when he’s felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. The guys reflect on losing parents, the things their parents taught them that still speak to them today, and the kind of wisdom that doesn’t necessarily come from a textbook.
From there, J and Dame get into Jay Electronica, Black Thought, Tupac and the difference between simply being able to rap and creating music that actually moves people. They discuss why wisdom and lived experience can make a simple line hit harder than the most complicated rhyme, and why Tupac’s ability to communicate emotion remains one of his greatest strengths.
The guys also talk about people minimizing other people’s accomplishments. Whether it’s a podcast, a comedy special, a hit record or being a “big fish in a small pond,” sometimes people are quick to dismiss the one thing somebody did exceptionally well. Their question is simple: Where’s yours?
Later, the conversation turns to aging, beauty and why people can be so resistant to simply looking their age before J and Dame get into one of the biggest stories of the week: the Tupac murder case. J reflects on being 14 when Tupac was killed and now, 30 years later, finally seeing someone convicted in connection with his death. They discuss Keefe D, street codes, witnesses refusing to cooperate decades later, what actually constitutes snitching and whether Tupac’s family can finally experience some form of closure.
That leads into the Lil Durk case, murder-for-hire allegations, gang loyalty, the cycle of violence and why people with money and opportunities can still remain trapped inside a lifestyle that could ultimately destroy them.
The guys close with Skilla Baby’s growth as an artist, the impossible standard created by Tupac’s “Dear Mama,” authenticity in rap and why everybody doesn’t need to manufacture a struggle they never actually lived.

  • EP541 - Sponsored By God
    ShopTalk Podcast – Episode 541
This week on ShopTalk Podcast, J and Dame are back for another week of foolishness, but the conversation gets serious early as the guys talk about how quickly life can change. They reflect on loss, carrying more than people realize, appreciating the people around you, and why sometimes simply making it through another week is something to be thankful for.
From there, the guys get into the darker side of social media and the internet. After discussing a major child sex-trafficking case, they question why pimp culture has been so heavily glorified in music and Black culture despite the reality behind it. That leads into AI-generated misinformation, viral stories that people share without checking, online impersonation, Cash App scams, fake call centers and some personal stories about almost getting got — and actually getting got.
The conversation shifts to relationships, cheating and why the public can completely change how they view a celebrity based on their personal life. J and Dame discuss Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, Drake’s reputation with women, athletes trying to maintain marriages while constantly traveling, and what happens when retirement suddenly means being around your spouse every day.
Later, the guys react to the controversy surrounding Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, Police Chief Todd Bettison and community activist Dontae Smith. They question the motives behind posting old photos of Sheffield with a former boyfriend, discuss the allegations surrounding the situation, and argue that accusations shouldn’t automatically be treated as proof. They also question whether Sheffield is being scrutinized differently as Detroit’s first Black woman mayor. SHoptalkpodcast _ EP541.txt
On the sports side, J and Dame debate Jalen Duren’s contract situation with the Pistons, whether 20 and 10 is worth max-level money, Detroit’s expectations for its athletes, and how the Eastern Conference could shake out. They also give their thoughts on the Lions’ new rivalry uniforms.
J talks about riding his bike across the Gordie Howe International Bridge into Canada, including just how tough that incline really is. That conversation eventually leads into the recent flooding and power outages in Indiana, how quickly social media narratives can get ahead of the full story, and a discussion about what happened in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
The guys close with another scam story involving a former NFL player accused of taking more than $1 million from women, the myth of overnight success, and why most people who appear to blow up overnight were actually working for years before anybody noticed.

  • EP540 | The Villan In Somebody's Story
    ShopTalk Podcast – Episode 540
This week on ShopTalk Podcast, J and Dame get into boundaries, friendship, responsibility, perspective, money, relationships and the stories we tell ourselves about other people.
The guys start by talking about longtime friendships and whether having no friends from earlier stages of your life should be considered a red flag. That leads into getting older, leaving the club scene behind, the money they used to spend going out, and some wild stories from their younger days, including J being robbed at gunpoint for his jewelry.
From there, the conversation turns to perspective and how easily you can become the villain in somebody else's story. J shares a workplace story about an employee who believed her new supervisor was targeting her, while from his perspective he was simply enforcing standards that previous leadership had ignored. The guys discuss how two people can experience the exact same situation and walk away believing completely different versions of what happened.
That opens up one of the biggest conversations of the episode: when does somebody else's problem stop being your responsibility? J and Dame talk about favors, family, adult children, helping people who have become accustomed to your help, and why being available doesn't mean you're obligated. Sometimes poor planning on somebody else's part simply can't become your emergency.
The conversation continues into parents interfering in their adult children's relationships, humble beginnings, first apartments, starting with mismatched furniture and very little money, and why there's nothing wrong with building from the bottom. The guys also discuss becoming less attached to houses and possessions as they get older and recognizing that the memories matter more than the building itself.
Later, they react to a video involving a man who traveled to Dearborn expecting the Muslim community he'd been warned about online, only to discover something completely different once he actually experienced it himself. That sparks a broader discussion about internet narratives, misinformation, fear, perspective, and why sometimes you need to actually go see something for yourself before forming an opinion.
J and Dame also talk about using AI as a tool to understand complicated information, fact-check questionable social media claims and simplify contracts or medical information. Then the conversation turns toward money, student loans, splitting restaurant bills, the pressure to appear wealthy, and why they believe so much of our identity can become tied to how much money people think we have.
The fellas close things out with the Joe vs. Donell Jones Verzuz, some G-Unit and Tony Yayo talk, and a strong week for hip-hop releases. They give Skilla Baby his flowers for his growth as an artist and discuss his new album The Price of Fame, Nas' involvement with the project, The Game's Documentary 3, Rapsody, and Nipsey Hussle and Bino Rideaux's latest project.
    Music Pick of the Week:
🎵 Skilla Baby – “Respect My Gangsta” feat. Nas

  • Shoptalkpodcast - EP539
    ## ShopTalk Podcast – Episode 539 | All American Tech Tutors
This week on **ShopTalk Podcast**, J and Dame kick things off with some technical difficulties that give J the perfect opportunity to resurrect an old business idea: **All American Tech Tutors**. After getting Dame's audio and camera situation together, the two debate who really deserves the blame for the problems and whether J has officially earned his new title as ShopTalk's resident tech support.
From there, the guys talk about hobbies and interests they had growing up that they wish they'd pursued further. Both J and Dame look back on their love for drawing and comic books, their time at Cass Tech, and dreams of making a living as artists. Dame talks about painting and teaching himself tattooing, while J reflects on discovering photography as a teenager and wonders how far his skills might have developed if he'd stuck with it for the last 30 years.
That leads into a deeper conversation about **photography, finding your specialty, and the importance of preserving memories**. J explains why he's considering focusing his photography on birthday portraits for people 30 and older and family photography. The guys share stories about old family photographs, photo albums, school pictures, funerals, reunions, and how a single photograph can become part of a family's history for generations.
Elsewhere, J and Dame discuss smart glasses and the Apple Vision Pro, old-school comic book shops and trading cards, the new Spider-Man movie, and whether they have the discipline to give up something they love when something more important is at stake.
The fellas also spend some time with **Nipsey Hussle's posthumous album *Prolific***, reflecting on the way Nipsey's family has handled his legacy and why *Victory Lap* will always be connected to an important period in ShopTalk's own history. They also talk about J. Cole's upcoming Detroit show and the possibility of catching his final tour.
To close things out, Dame puts out the call for a few guests he'd like to see come through ShopTalk, including the **Work on Sunday crew, Mac Nichols, and Charity**, before sharing this week's music pick.
    **Music Pick of the Week:**
    🎵 **Kid Real – "Choices"**
    **Whose Mans Is This?**
J gives his unconventional shout-out to the federal judge behind a recent ruling involving suppressors and NFA regulations.
Five hundred and thirty-nine weeks in a row. Still here.

  • EP 538 | Can You Be Good in a Bad System?
Episode 538 | Can You Be Good in a Bad System?
This week, J and Dame cover a little bit of everything, but one conversation stands above the rest: **Can good people exist inside institutions that many believe are fundamentally broken?**
Using examples ranging from gangs and organized groups to policing, the guys wrestle with the difference between judging an individual and judging the system they choose to be a part of. It's one of the episode's most thoughtful discussions and raises questions without pretending there are easy answers.
Elsewhere in the episode, J and Dame talk about modern parenting and the realities of co-parenting, why social media often ignores the practical side of raising children, and the financial pressures that come with trying to do right by your family.
The conversation also explores the search for community and belonging, why every room isn't meant for everybody, and how finding your tribe can be more valuable than chasing popularity or recognition. The guys discuss the difference between being known and being respected, and whether today's version of fame is really worth pursuing.
To close things out, they celebrate the 25th anniversary of **Jadakiss' _Kiss Tha Game Goodbye_**, revisit classic hip-hop albums, discuss **Skilla Baby's** growth as an artist, and share their music picks of the week.
As always, it's another episode full of laughs, honest conversations, cultural commentary, and the kind of random detours that only happen on ShopTalk.
