  • Short Stops - #30: No one can predict the market ... but we're going to try anyway.
Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
"A prediction about the direction of the stock market tells you nothing about where stocks are headed, but a whole lot about the person doing the predicting." - Warren Buffett
For almost 29 episodes, everyone who has contributed to Short Stops has done their best to provide a professional, educated and informed analysis on what we believe are the potential outcomes of stocks and opportunities available in the market for our audiences. So to commemorate our last episode for 2018 and our 30th one to date, Caylum is going chill, relax and do something a little different this time around.
Eleanore Lee-Teo is pulling the reigns on this fun mix of familiar candidates to host a friendly competition amongst the team members. With only a few hours to prepare, every contestant that you will hear on this podcast will be tasked to answer the same question:
"What do you predict will happen in 2019?"
All answers were required to be related to stocks, the economy or business and we are putting their responses to the record so that we can review the tape back in December of 2019 to find out if any of them actually came true. A profound explanation was necessary to validate their predictions and the result is a pool of sometimes-rational and sometimes-outrageous ideas on this show.
DISCLAIMER: These should not be considered stock tips or recommendations of any sort. While all the information and facts presented are true, the team was allowed to inject their own personal bias into their opinions which is what most people who claim they can predict the stock market actually do.
This is our way of celebrating 2018 despite the market giving us few reasons to rejoice so hopefully we can bring some joy and cheer to our listeners with this one. Thank you for being a part of Short Stops since Day 1.

  • Short Stops - #29: The How's and Why's of Speculation
Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
"If you're going to speculate, then know the rules - this is not an investment. When the story is over, the trade is done. If you're still holding onto it after people have stopped talking about it, this is not going to end happily ever after."
Let's face the facts. As active traders, we know that there is huge money to be made in trading speculative stocks and the opportunity loss is significant if you don't try to understand how it works. But we also know the difference between riding stocks in play and blindly gambling in the market. So to give you a peek into how the house approaches these kind of trades, we've brought back Bryan Gomez and Terence Chan to share their experiences with the following:
    - What is the origin of a speculative issue?
    - What factors define a speculative stock?
    - Which are the primary indicators that can be used to measure them?
    - Speculation is a short-term play. It’s not even about just “knowing when it get out”. It’s about “knowing that you need to get out” before everyone else.

Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
"You can't use your P&L as the only basis as to whether you are a good trader or not. You might make a lot of money on one trade doing something that you're not supposed to but over time, your weakness will start to show. There's no hiding from consistency." - Carlton Bryan
You didn't think we were going to leave it at just one podcast, did you?
In an off-the-cuff interview, our Director of Marketing & Operations, Eleanore Lee Teo, met up with Carlton Bryan, Floor Manager at SMB Capital, to discuss his almost decade-long journey with the firm. You would be surprised as to how well many of you can relate to this veteran NYC trader as he shares his mistakes, initial bad habits and greatest lessons learned throughout his experience with the market. Carlton is the result of years of training and mentorship under some of the greatest trading coaches in the industry so check out the scope of what he has to say below:
    - Transitioning his passion for trading into a profession

    - Overtrading - the most common challenge all new players face

    - Why you don't need to be involved in every single trade or setup out there

- The Value of Risk Management - "If you don't know how much money you could potentially lose with every trade, don't bother trading."

- Knowing how to scale in and scale out is what separates the amateurs from the professionals

    - The process of trading success is like the letter "U"

  • Short Stops - #27: The One Where We Went to New York (Dr. Brett Steenbarger & Mike Bellafiore)
Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
"The traders who are uncoachable are the ones who refuse to seek a coach out to begin with." - Dr. Brett Steenbarger (https://traderfeed.blogspot.com/)
This one is for our guys. Our junior and senior traders. Our team leaders and trainers. The ones who walk into the office every morning with the determination to make money but with an even greater desire to continue learning, adapting and growing with this market. Mike said it best - you need to love what you do but more importantly, you have to want to get better and better at it every single day. It's a performance sport. You are, in so many ways, an athlete. You have to work hard, show up and strive to be the best.
"Even successful traders need to keep learning and we need to give them that space to grow. Whether you're making one million dollars or three million dollars a year, it shouldn't stop there." - Mike Bellafiore, co-founder of SMB Capital (http://smbcap.com/)
In this episode of Short Stops, our Director of Marketing & Operations, Eleanore Lee-Teo, flies out to New York City after being granted an exclusive interview with clinical psychologist & performance coach, Dr. Brett Steenbarger, as well as the Mike Bellafiore, co-founder of SMB Capital, one of the leading proprietary trading desks in the city. With a focus on developing elite traders in the industry, these are only a few of the insights shared by these trading greats:
    - The value of having a Purpose
    - Why training is important - how to increase your odds of success and what can you can do to maximize that
    - "You have to trade like I do." - One of the worst messages that a coach can relay to their team
    - "The best traders focus on the process and not just their P&L. The best traders are never satisfied. They want to get better and better everyday."
    - Develop a Playbook - Find your Best Setups
    - Statistics Don't Lie - Why reviewing and recording the trades that you make is essential
    - Adaptability and Consistency. Adaptability and Consistency. We cannot stress this enough.
    - The Stages of Trader Development (Learning, Consistency, Sizing, Expanding your Playbook and Sophistication)
There is so much more wisdom to be gained. If you would like to learn more, their books will be highly recommended tools to place in your arsenal. Dr. Brett Steenbarger is the author of The Daily Trading Coach, The Psychology of Trading, Enhancing Trader Performance and Trading Psychology 2.0. Mike Bellafiore is the author of One Good Trade and The Playbook. They have also been featured on multiple podcasts and media spots such Bloomberg, CNN Money and BBC.

  • Short Stops - #25: Market Update & Implications of the Current Inflation Rate
Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
"The end is near." - Mark Jason Mariposa.
Whether he's talking about the major market correction or our portfolios, today's podcast episode is all about what's happening now. In May of 2018, Jason came on the show to talk about the potential concerns that could be triggered by an inflation rate of 6% and now that his forecast was realized, here's what we need to know:
    - How is the market directly affected by inflation? (Because as per our last episode on this topic, we found out that a lot of individuals are still confused by this.)
    - How is the bond market correlated with the stock market?
    - At what level do we start buying with our eyes closed?
    - In the meantime, what are we supposed to do?

  • Short Stops - #24: The Art of Selling (Why is it so hard to let go?)
Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
"When you're unprepared to sell this is what happens: you cut loss too soon because you're scared, then you regret it so you buy it back when it rallies only for you to sell it again when it shows signs of volatility. You do this once, twice, thrice and then when it finally makes that money-making surge - you're no longer there to take part in it."
Most novice traders spend more time preparing an execution plan to buy into a position without thinking about when to sell. Chad Pacheco & Ernest Buhangin, two senior proprietary traders in charge of training our junior recruits, are here to share why they believe the act of selling is the most difficult aspect of any trade.
    - How emotions play with our ability to take profit or to cut loss
    - All the reasons we tell ourselves as an excuse not to sell and the drawdowns that are a result
    - The valuable option to sell half
    - Developing an exit strategy: How to use price stops and time stops as safety nets

  • Short Stops - #23: From Good to Great
Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
"When you achieve some relative form of success, you start to think that the rules don’t apply to you when in fact, they apply to you even more."
A market such as this is what you would call a market that separates the men from the boys. Our senior global equity traders and Caylum coaches, Leonard Chua and Jensen Sy, are with us today to explain why the learning curve to excel in trading takes years and how the continuous process of refining our craft requires absolute patience and humility. Some of the topics that we cover include:
    - A brief take on today's market with the rise of inflation and economy factors that are battering the index.
    - What does it mean to be a mechanical trader and what part does intuitive trading play?
    - Is your trading system really solid or are you just lucky that the market is cooperating?
    - Defining what a "jackpot" in this industry really means
    - Wisdom of the Crowd: Why winning in this game means you learn from the experiences of multiple sources. It was never a one-mentor-one-guru form of learning to begin with.

  • Short Stops - #22: G.O.A.T. (What 30 Years of Technical Analysis Sounds Like)
Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
Before the Internet, before Facebook, before the explosion of market information - there was only gut-feel. In other words, at one point in time, people were gambling in the Philippine stock market like it was a casino until one man was tasked to introduce the world of charts, patterns and trading systems to the local industry. He pioneered the movement to educate new traders about Technical Analysis and has changed the game since. We were finally able to get a few precious minutes with COL Financial Group's Chief Technical Analyst, Mr. Juanis Barredo, to discuss the following:
    - Without the benefit of structured lessons and seminars, how did you study the world of Technical Analysis?
    - The value of trading experience - knowledge is useless if you refuse to execute it.
    - What is the best advice that you could impart to new traders who are starting out?
    - The indicators that matter and the tools that don't.
    - A summary of his short-term outlook for the local market.

Hosted by Edmund Lee, President & CEO of the Caylum Trading Institute, Short Stops is your weekly stock market update featuring the top trading news, tips and stock picks in Metro Manila and around the world.
Over the weeks, we've received a number of requests to cover specific stocks and companies that most of our listeners have closely monitored on their watchlists. To simplify our thoughts and recommendations, we called on our Head of Research, Zarr Pacificador, to play a game with us using the following mechanics:
    1. We'll name an industry and he explains why we Like or Dislike it.
    2. We'll pitch a stock pick and he tells us why we should Buy or Sell it.
This is a regular Q&A session that will try to come back to every once in a while so if there's a something on your mind, let us know and we'll do our best to air it on our next podcast episode!
