Should armed cops be mandated in schools?

Listen Later

Earlier this year, the state assembly passed a set of bills that would mandate some schools to hire armed SROs and would require all schools to report incidents to the police. While the bills passed in assembly, they have not seen any movement in the Senate.
We spend the hour talking primarily about Assembly Bill 69 which states that “if 100 or more incidents occur in and on public school buildings and grounds during a school semester, and at least 25 of those incidents result in an arrest, the school must, no later than the first day of the next school year, employ or contract for the employment of a law enforcement officer as an armed school resource officer (SRO) to work at the school.”
Our guest today is Joanne Juhnke from Disability Rights Wisconsin (DRW). DRW is one of the organizations who oppose the bill.

Joanne Juhnke is an advocate with Disability Rights Wisconsin’s schools team. Disability Rights Wisconsin is a private non-profit organization that protects the rights of people with disabilities statewide. Joanne is an advocate and communications expert in mental health and disability policy, with extensive experience in non-profit organizations and the public sector.
