Her bosses wanted her to shut up and do her work, says Cate of her mother's bosses, but that was not who Helen was.  Helen grew up in South Carolina, one of three children raised by a farming family.

Her mother insisted she leave the farming life to her younger brothers and go to college. Within a few years, she was one of 5 women to graduate  from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Helen completed her teaching degree. Though she never taught in a classroom, she did teach her daughter that women are smart, they can work and raise children  at the same time.

Helen got a second shot at life later on  and said "there's nothing you can't do at 60 that you can at 40." She embraced a new career and was attentive and  fond of her grandson.

Because Helen struggled with being a perfectionist, she took motherhood very seriously, and felt its' confines. 

Once she recognized that her daughter was a strong and confident woman, she could relax and enjoy life. Cate says about her mom "she had a wonderful personality and great fashion sense and people were drawn to her."

many peopple say tht their past defines them. Others say they are determined to change who they are because of their past, and that new trajectory defines who they truly become.

Elizabeth Bennett says, “being a survivor of domestic violence, sexual abuse and bullying as a young person, has taught me that in order to succeed in life, I must be willing to do whatever it takes to heal and move forward. I have used my past as a vehicle of opportunity to flourish in the present and in the future."

Steve is a natural as a host. He found his passion for the radio business at the age of six, but wasn't able to fulfill that

dream till a little later in life.  

As you listen to the wonderful stories Steve shares,  you'll find out that he was raised by both his maternal grandmother and his mom.  "Grandmother was worthless until a crisis. Grandmother was my mother, my light. 'Mother', as he refers to his mom, was my 'dad'-the two women set up  those 'roles'," McCurdy shares.

You'll hear Steve repeat over and over again how magnificent his mother was -"a powerful, independent woman with a great, great mind, yet she wanted to be wild and crazy and she never really got to do that." Plus, Margie never went to college because any money the family  had went to Margie's brother's wants and needs.

Margie started working in a local bank  in Texas at 16 and because of her expertise, hard work and dedication over decades of running the Proof Department, she was able to apply for a  program through Southwest Institute Of Graduate Business Studies and SMU. Because she had never gotten and undergraduate degree, she was able to take an exam, passed the test with flying colors, got her undergraduate degree certificate based on her lifelong experience and the exam and became the first person to ever complete a Masters program at SMU without having actually attended college. There is more to this story  as it was taking place in the late 60's and the Civil Rights Movement. Steve's mother made a considerable effort to train the other female employees and not just overlook them because she knew they were intelligent and capable to do any job if trained properly.

Robert Crutchfield is the founder of Crutchfield Cooks Food Blog and host and producer of Crutchfield Cooks Podcast. 

Robert Crutchfield is the eldest of three children and  my guest shares that they really had their mother to thank for helping them understand the significance of sibling relationships -they generally loved one another, again thanks to his mother. 

On the other hand, Robert says, "I loved my mother, but my mother was scary." She worked for the Director of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover , during the Korean War. And she didn't hesitate to say what was truly on her mind. 

Robert loves that his mom was an "avid reader and she desperately wanted to be a writer." She was  a little jealous that Robert was getting paid to write. She attended business school, but never completed her degree.  Don't think that that was going to hold her back in any way. 

Marilyn was determined to stay home with the kids when they were small, even though it was a financial struggle.  She began teaching her daughter how to cook and then she was determined to teach her two sons, because "she'd be hell bent if any son of hers starved because he didn't know how  to turn the stove on, " Robert recalls fondly. 

Proud of both his parents, Robert was determined  to share that his parents were a pair/teammates. They worked together raising the kids and they supported one another always.

Robert attributes his cooking  prowess to his mother, but also his paternal grandfather. He's been fortunate to have generations of chefs in his lineage. "I learned most of my early knowledge of cooking and food from her,"Crutchfield offers. 

"It was intimidating to me," says Robert as he was learning and meeting professional chefs. Yet he found that his mother had taught him some of the same techniques, just not a fancy name. Robert admits to 'reinventing himself' many times over and each journey has played a significant role in his life and what he's achieved in his life.

Rob truly enjoys writing his food blog-tweaking recipes after trial and error. He believes that he wants to hold his bar very high. He believes in credibility and want to deliver accurate information and recipes.

Family dinners and treating each other with respect was always the family motto.  Both Kristi and her mother, Carla grew up in Kansas on a farm in a very small town. 

Kristi was so inspired by the work of Emily Post, that she founded "the Polite Company" where she enjoys helping people of all ages become aware of the impression they make on coworkers, friends and family. For Kristi, it's inspiring to see  her clients/students feel more confident once they have a few tools to help them in professional and personal settings.  Many of her students are first generation college attendees seeking to accomplish what's never been attainable in their family's history.

Emily Post wrote her very first book on etiquette in 1922 as a 5o year old divorced mother. Her guidelines incorporate the belief that "etiquette has nothing to do with your last name, it has nothing to do with where you're from, it has nothing to do with how much money you have , it has everything to do with how you treat other people.  And learning manners and etiquette costs $0.00."

They've released  the 100th Centennial version of Ms. Post's book on etiquette  with the inclusion of technology and social media.

Kristi shares many wonderful stories of her relationship with her mother and all that her mother has taught her throughout her life.

Beginning at a young age, Brenden felt compelled to become an accountant in order to relieve his parents of their financial burden. Now he's the founder of MasterTalk where Brenden refers to himself as "a public speaker, communicator and facilitator." Brenden is the first in his family's lineage to complete higher education. 

My guest currently lives in Montreal Canada where he purchased a home for he and his mother in order to eliminate two mortgages. Culturally, as the first born, he had inherent responsibilities, including being very protective of his mother. Unfortunately his father, who passed away in 2019, was affected by  alcoholism and made things challenging around the home.  Both parents worked hard as factory workers, but just couldn't make ends meet. Brenden, who says, he was always good with numbers, studied accounting and got great jobs out of college and was eventually able to pay off all outstanding debt.

Brenden admires and loves his mother tremendously. He says, "my mother has a very different life now than what she struggled through in the last ten years. Culturally, "you don't just walk away from your partner or family member who is struggling. You continue to support them and provide for them.  My #1 priority was making sure everyone was safe," says Brenden.

Sri Lanka, is an island country located in South-Central Asia, and Brenden shares stories of both his parents who grew up in Sri Lanka. His mother is the youngest of a large family and she loved to tend to the family garden.  She married at 30 years old and immigrated to Canada.  His mother taught her son many wonderful life lessons including  his story that he shares about the $10 bill he found on the ground. Vijee hoped that her son understood that " even if we don't have a lot, we have a lot more than other people do and always be generous and lead with that generosity."

After years of studying to be an accountant, then technology consultant, he was able to shift into doing what he really loved. He felt all of his steps in life where important. "That first step was absolutely necessary to get to the person I am today." Kumarasamy continues, " I got out of survival mode later in life and started to focus on the bigger picture of what I could do to serve the world"

Brenden's Youtube channel is full of wonderful videos with professional advice for improving ones public speaking skills. He is self taught and wants everyone to understand that it wasn't easy in the beginning. He practiced hundreds of times before he felt he was ready. He was very fearful of launching that first Youtube video. He talks about trying to reach out and help many with public speaking skills and says "that when you care about others and only want to add value, you’ll be able to overcome any fear/obstacle in the service of others."

My guest was born in Ukraine then moved to Russia with her family. At 16, Natasha felt the need for some sort of spiritual connection in her life.  Neither her mother or father believed in traditional religious beliefs, so she started attending services in different temples and churches. But it wasn't until she met Rachelle, that my guest was encouraged to find her own calling. Rachelle did not  persuade Natasha to do anything specific in life, yet there was a mutual interest in caring for children who did not have families of their own.

Natasha was so taken with Rachelle's sincerity and concern. Rachelle was actually one of the very first adults to ask Natasha personal questions. "She gave me a lot of hope and comfort by just being there. And because she was there, I   always had hope and ideas of what would be next in life. Rachelle is very personal. She feels very deeply and when someone shares their story, she's ready to feel it, cry with them, laugh with them says Natasha.

Natasha is very happy to be living in a more remote area now with her family. She's cooking up a storm and you can find her recipes and tricks of the kitchen trade on her social media pages-links are below.

Welcome to Natasha’s Home! My husband, Krisztian and I currently live in Eastern Europe in Hungary. We recently welcomed a little baby girl into our family!

I was born in Ukraine, grew up in Russia, but have been all over the world in the last 7 years. I think I visited around 13 countries in my journey as a Christian missionary (what an adventure that was!). My husband and I first met at a local Hungarian orphanage where we were spending time with the kids as a part of a missionary team, and little did I know that this town I was “just passing by” was going to be my future home!

After getting married I started learning more about cooking and homemaking, and it is no less of a journey than I had before! As I discover new recipes, kitchen hacks, tips, and tricks that help me become a better home cook, I love to share them with you so that you can be inspired and learn a bunch yourself! "Mom never allowed me to shy away from the challenges," says Chantal who refers to herself as a neurodiversity advocate.

At a young age, Chantal's mom picked up that that her daughter's learning abilities seemed  off.  It was clear that Chantal's behavior at home didn't reflect correctly with her report cards.  Chantal struggled in school, in part due to her learning difficulties plus the social pressures from her piers and bullying. But again, it was Yvonne who continually encouraged her daughter to "not worry about it. You'll always run your own business."

Chantal wishes she had seen her mom's sensibility earlier on instead of putting more pressure on herself to tackle fields of study that were  too rigorous,  ie, sciences and graphic design. According to my guest,  "my mother taught  me how to manage and look out for my burnout."

One of the most important messages that Chantal wants to get across is " no one should ever be ashamed of the tools  or the accommodations  they need because of neurodiversity disabilities."

Now, starting her own business has lessened the pressure on Chantal. SOCOLO came about because of the difficulties she had when reading and focusing on words specifically on white paper or causing 'visual stress.' "50% of the people with Autism and 50% of the people with Dyslexia also have visual stress or Irlin Syndrome. So white paper doesn't quite work with our group. The whole idea  behind SOCOLO was to deal with the emotional side of Dyslexia." 

Chantal has a wonderful story to tell of the strength of her mother and how important it was that her mother never faulted her daughter for her challenges, yet lifter her up and encouraged her every step of the way.

Before you proceed, I  want to warn you, that this episode does contain graphic content that some may find disturbing.

Vivace is a very bright woman who received her undergraduate and graduate degree in Biology from Cornell University. She worked in the medical field for twelve years before becoming  a speaker and life coach.

My guest explains that "my mother was my BFF and she lives for her children." This was all terribly hard because Vivace always wanted her mother "to feel  valued and honored yet she was at the bottom of everyone's totem pole."

Unfortunately, the abuse toward she and her mother started when Vivace was very young and continued until both women left the family, leaving behind the two sons as they chose to remain with their father. Yet, Vivace recalls asking her mother on a regular basis  "can we leave today, can we leave today" but it was years before they left.  From a young age, Vivace would confront her father verbally about the abuse, but her bravery came with a price. 

With $100 in their pocket, both women left the horrific beatings behind and found shelter with family members who unfortunately knew of the abuse, but never came to Jaleh's rescue.

Through many years of depression, pain, anger, resentment and a planned suicide,  Vivace began her healing process through therapy, research and seeking the truth. 

She uses her past experience as a tool to help her clients improve their self worth and confidence through compassion and understanding. Ultimately, the client has to realize that the possibilities are limitless.

I feel that I got an up close and personal invitation into the life of a female pioneer who because of her own accomplishments, worked alongside other fearless women who broke through barriers. So when your mother sets the bar super high, what do you do?  One follows suit apparently.

And that's exactly what Andrea Ippolito has done. As I mention in my introduction, she has a very impressive background. Both mother and daughter are engineers and their lives/personalities are very much intertwined or "tangled" as Andrea says.

In this episode you'll hear stories of Mary working with female astronauts redesigning the first female space suit so it's anatomically correct for a woman. That's something significant that never crossed my mind until I heard these stories.

Andrea says that her mom is still an inspiration to her. "Mom raised us to stick up for ourselves" recalls Ippolito. Andrea says her mother was always there for her, she encouraged her to experience different things and situations. Mary says, "she taught me that we need more women innovators at the table designing the next generation of women's health products with their own lived experience whenever possible."

About Andrea:Andrea Ippolito currently serves as the CEO and Founder of SimpliFed. Prior to joining Cornell, Andrea served as the Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Innovators Network within the VA Center for Innovation and served as a Presidential Innovation Fellow based out of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and General Services Administration. She was the Co-Founder of an innovative application that improves access to care called Smart Scheduling (acquired by athenahealth in 2016). She also previously served as the Co-Director of MIT Hacking Medicine, as an Innovation Specialist at the Brigham Innovation Hub and Product Innovation Manager at athenahealth. Ms. Ippolito completed her MS in Engineering & Management at MIT and engineering degrees at Cornell.
