It has been referred to as the Think Tank and likened to a spaceship, however, in this episode we look beyond its interesting architecture. For this episode, we resurrected three of our favourite segments from the last year. Sam Popowich discusses his book Confronting the Democratic Discourse of Librarianship: A Marxist Perspective, featuring a historical materialist account of library ideology and its development. We bring you spicy reviews of Madonna’s aptly titled book, Sex, and other controversial titles from the stacks in the Bruce Peel Special Collection. Anne Elefante, a member of the Future Librarians for Intellectual Freedom shared banned library books with us, and you’d be surprised by what is banned. Finally, we have SLIS’ own Dr. Danielle Allard talking about her work on a sex workers database.

This episode covers Forum for Information Professionals (FIP) held on Feb. 7, 2020. FIP is a student-run conference hosted by the students in the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta.

In this episode, several conference presenters talked about their works, with topics including climate change, refugee information needs, libraries values in the technology industry, and cataloguing indigenious syllabics. We also had the opportunity to chat with the keynote speaker Sharon Siga, CEO of the Strathcona County Library. Finally, FIP organizers would share their thoughts on behind-the-scene stories of running this conference.

In October 2019, the Toronto Public Library rented a meeting room to a group called “Radical Feminists Unite!” who invited a trans-exclusionary radical feminist, Meghan Murphy, to speak. This raises heated discussions around library policies and the border line of freedom of expression in Canada.

In this episode, some Shouters had our own live panel discussion on this incident, intellectual freedom and the use of library spaces. As future librarians, we talked about the generational divide in interpreting freedom of expression, intellectual freedom in the context of libraries and in Canada, the core values of libraries, and how and why library policies are important in terms of integrating into communities.

We also have statements from several people who shared their thoughts with us: Matthew Stepanic, writer in residence at EPL and co-owner of Glass Bookshop; Parker Leflar, co-owner of the Quiltbag and a frequent library patron; and Colette Poitras, a Métis librarian.
