Show Club Podcast

It's spooky season, so let's talk magic! We head to an alternate past where magic has always existed as we discuss the BBC miniseries Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.

While overall everyone enjoyed it to some extent, the main criticism is the pacing. It starts off rather slowly, and then everything happens at the end. Would it be better if the story was restructured to include some of the more narrative elements as flashbacks to the action? Perhaps. Also, the appearance of the Raven King felt underwhelming, and we're still not entirely sure who he is and what his purpose in the story is.

Visually, this show is stunning. Especially the visualization of Jonathan's magic and how its quality seems to play into the wilder and more innate ability of his magical skill.

Perhaps our favorite reveal in the entire series is when you learn the truth about what The Gentleman taking half of Lady Pole's life really means. Those Faeries really are damnable creatures.

Up next, we head into the world of video games with Season 1 of Mythic Quest, available on AppleTV. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ih2ODfe71mI

We're finally talking about The Mighty Nein season 1. And since this show was very much not up Kerri's street, we're joined by a special guest, Justin!

There are discussions about the use of known Earth-based references in purely fantastic settings, the amazing cast, and what side quests everyone enjoyed the most.

There's a great talk about Not The Brave and her alcoholism and how several characters have extremely tragic backstories.

Next month we take a trip to an alternate past where magic is real with Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell TRAILER: https://youtu.be/gXv9Ozt0thE?si=5PKnjG_pKJGbKj09

This month we kick off Season 3 of this podcast as we head off to college with the hockey show everyone is talking about. No, not that one. The other one. That's right, we're discussing Off Campus, season 1.

This show is definitely right up Rachael's alley. Not as much for Evelyn and Kerri. It's not that the show is bad. They're just not the audience for this type of story. But despite that, this conversation went on much longer than we expected.

We appreciate all the conversations the guys actually have with each other. And while we're doubtful those conversations are happening in real life, we hope this show leads to that changing. And the fact that everyone pretty much gets along without being overly cliquey about things is a really refreshing change of pace.

Allie really needs to get her shit together. Sure, don't give up on love, but it is 1000% okay to give up on the guy when the guy is a dick.

Also, Evelyn's cat keeps running over her keyboard, and we found it hilarious every time it happened.

Up next, we finally head back to the world of animation for season 1 of The Mighty Nein, available on Amazon. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri2wNyvSpiY&pp=ygUgdGhlIG1pZ2h0eSBuZWluIHNlYXNvbiAxIHRyYWlsZXI%3D

We head back to the UK as we discuss season 19 (series, Jason) of Taskmaster.

We discuss the show in general. The contestants. The tasks. All of the nitty-gritty. Kerri also gave Rachael and Evelyn a prize task for them to bring to the recording. And we have to ask ourselves, "What's gonna happen when we graduate?"

This show is just so heart-warming and seeing how the cast bonds together and are still friends today is really amazing.

For August, we're tapping into what everyone in the entire world seems to be watching with Off Campus, Season 1. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhhfIk99HdQ

Just a quick update to let you all know that, unfortunately, June got away from us, so there will be no episode. Don't worry, though, we will come back to The Mighty Nein in September.

For July, Kerri has selected Taskmaster Series 19! We hope you all enjoy it.

It's time for more mystery and detecting as we discuss season 1 of 2012's Elementary.

This is Rachael's favorite version of Holmes and Watson. Evelyn really enjoys it. And Kerri thinks it's perfectly fine. Still this is an overall recommendation from everyone and you should watch it if you haven't.

We do love the fact that (spoilers) Holmes and Watson never cross the line into a romantic relationship. They're really just great as platonic besties, and it's good that it stays that way. Overall, the casting in this show is really well done. However, this show is one of the examples of, if you've watched too much TV, then you can figure out Who Done It just by who the guest star is for the week. But it's still fun!

We appreciate how well they handled Sherlock's drug use and how prominent it continued to be. Most of the time in shows, it's a sort of background thing that comes up every now and then when the plot needs it. The drug use and addiction as portrayed in this show is something you don't really see very often.

We also decide to get into a bit of deductive vs. inductive vs. abductive reasoning and which one Sherlock actually uses.

She's officially back in the MCU, so we go back and rewatch season 1 of Jessica Jones.

The casting for this series is really outstanding, especially David Tennant as the ultra-creepy Kilgrave.

Rachael's main complaint with this show is that everyone makes the worst decision at almost every turn. We did all find interesting how anti-climactic the ending and Kilgrave's death were, even though it seems like that was designed on purpose. Any other kind of death that was flashier or showier would have just fed into his ego and narcissism.

One thing we're still a little confused about is what exactly Jessica knew about Luke from the start and why she was even following him in the first place.

We do try to answer the question of whether or not someone with Kilgrave's powers be good?

And, finally, shout out to the door.

Next month we visit the land of crimes and mysteries with Elementary season 1, available on Hulu. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/Hk8FwxGk8l4?si=tfsIh-t-HG9ZnI6-

It might not be spooky season, but we're talking vampires anyway as we return to What We Do In The Shadows, season 1. BAT!

We get into Matt Berry's AMAZING performance. The relationship between Nandor and Guillermo. The absolutely spot-on cameos of the vampires who make up the Vampire Council. And also the fact that these aren't regular vampires. These guys are just fucking idiots.

Colin is interesting. The whole energy vampire thing in general is fascinating but we do wish they had saved the reveal that he has actual supernatural abilities for later in the season. It would have worked a bit better if we were unsure if he was a vampire for real or just the world's most boring man.

There's also a short sidetrack into talking about the film Vamps.

And speaking of Krysten Ritter, next month we revisit the superhero genre with the first season of Jessica Jones. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/nWHUjuJ8zxE?si=2pRUto0Wo5uLunZm

It's time to head into the jungle to search for two missing kids as we discuss the Peacock (not Amazon Prime) original series, The Resort. There's love! Adventure! Mystery! What more could a girl want?

While we disagree a little on how well the plot of the show works, we do agree that the acting is all around fantastic. It's very clear from the get-go who all of the characters are and what their relationships are like.

This show does an excellent job of showing the different ways people process grief and loss.

But what was Alex's deal? Was he really Alejandro or just losing his mind?

Next month, it's a vampire reality show. That's right! We're (re)watching season 1 of What We Do in the Shadows. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfBbSwX6kEk

This month, we revisit season 1 of the Tom Hiddleston-led spy drama The Night Manager.

Overall, we really like this series. The casting is amazing, and it is a very interesting story. However, we would have liked to have seen more of the training Jonathan Pine went through and how his relationship with Angela Burr developed.

Speaking of, his relationships with the women in the show and how he seduces pretty much all of them was sometimes a bit much. Some of it could have worked better if it had been clearer how much time had passed between certain scenes.

Next month, a couple trying to rekindle their romance winds up embroiled in a decades-long mystery at The Resort. TRAILER: https://youtu.be/0DmeT1GLQn8?si=uxNghimtluyTbXug
