Amina Mohamed of "Cameras for Girls" joined me at the table to share about her journey back home to Uganda and how she is helping to elevate the girls in her community while also providing an amazing experience for travelers. Every year when we operate our photo-tour to Uganda, we carve out 3 days to teach photography and business skills to girls and women studying journalism in Uganda. We raise funds and collect new and used point & shoot camera’s for the girls and teach them to use the camera to tell stories that matter to them. This tool helps the girls learn a new skill, advance in their journalism careers, improve their options and change their lives.
HOW DOES IT WORK? At the tender young age of 50, Shari Doherty found herself in unfamiliar territory. She had spent decades raising children, building a corporate career, managing multiple small businesses (one for five years that wasn't really so small!), managing both children as high level competitive athletes and nurturing a beautiful marriage.
The kids were launching, the major side business wound down, the competitive sports were wrapping up and as the final "blow" her corporate career came to an end. Thankfully the marriage had remained the one solid anchor for her. She then found herself with an empty nest, a chance at a second career and an identity crisis. Who did she want to be for the second half of her life?
