Steve and Darron talk about Darrons passion for the Ocean and how the Ocean saved his life. Doomed to a seeming destiny of Gangsterism Darron refused to let his life fall apart. At a very young age Darron walked to his local beach break hoping to stay out of the way of an abusive home life. He sat studying Surfers for 3 years until finally being given the opportunity to try it for himself. He stood up on his first wave - the rest is history. Fast forward - Darron is not a Husband a Father and a Philanthropist with his wife Lindsay in Cape Town South Africa where they run safe home called the GloHouse. Darrons sole purpose is to create a safe environment for kids that are being exposed to the type of life he once had to undergo.

Andrzej Urbanski is an established Cape Town-based artist prized for his immaculate hard-edged abstract art. The clean, precise forms defining it belie its relationship to memory, sensory and spatial encounters, emotions and psychic states, which are channelled most often into overlapping colourful geometric shapes, implying resolution. The bold shards of colour characterising his art may recall objects, places, experiences from his youth, the colour of a building or a room, or encompass the state of mind he is in as he steps into his Woodstock studio. As such his painted art is described as ‘high’ or ‘low frequency’, referring to either a complex matrix of influences shaping intricate compositions, or in the latter instance, quieter, ‘less busy’ forms often united by a subdued colour palette.

His art appears to be the result of an automated process – the precision of its execution engenders this notion that it is generated by a detached, robotic or digital tool. His interest in generating this illusion is rooted in his fascination with digitally produced art, the digital tools he uses in plotting his intricate compositions, the relationship between lived experience and virtual reality and the valorisation of handmade products in the post-industrial era. It is also informed by his appreciation for the minimalist movement, though he is inspired by a range of high modernists from Rothko to Piet Mondrian.

He employs the unconventional spray paint medium in his abstract painting as it produces flat colour and removes any trace of the ‘artist’s hand’. This conforms not only to the minimalist ethos but his desire to replicate imagery that appears to be digitally generated.

He is a prolific painter and sculptor who has participated in countless group exhibitions around the world since graduating with a Masters in Fine Art from the ECAL University of Art and Design in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2012. He was born in Poznan, Poland, in 1983 and settled in Berlin, Germany, with his parents in 1989. Growing up in Berlin’s ‘grey zone’ after the fall of the wall in the late eighties when barriers between east and west were eroded activated his participation in street culture. He first experimented with spray-paint as a graffiti artist before applying this medium in a fine art context. After exhibiting in shows in his then hometown of Berlin, Georgia USA, Canada and Switzerland, a Cape Town residency brought him to South African shores in 2012. He relocated to this country and enjoyed his first South African solo exhibition, Mindgame, in 2015 at Salon 91 in Cape Town.

It was a sell-out show and he has gone from strength to strength as an artist, producing larger more ambitious works and compositions. He is currently represented by Everard Read and to date has had solo exhibitions in their Johannesburg, Cape Town and London spaces.

“Urbanski is a rare breed of artist – one who authentically manages to playfully negotiate perfect applications and concrete designs with a focused ability that denotes fresh and pertinent abstract experimentation,” says Emma Vandermerwe, Head Curator at Everard Read in Cape Town.

“Urbanski has settled on a vocabulary and aesthetic that chimes with these times though its lines extend back in time,” wrote art commentator Mary Corrigall in the Cape Times (August 23, 2017).

Marti Lund is an artist, specialising in contemporary mural painting and oil paintings on canvas. He is also avid pencil draftsman, collager and Visual Arts teacher at Rondebosch Boys’ High School.

He garnered a highly resolved realistic oil painting style and a broad sense of theoretical foundation through a Bachelor of Fine Arts Cum Laude at Rhodes University. After this he put the small brushes down to set off on a two year trip across Canada and Central America: painting abandoned buildings, backpackers, bars and restaurants.

This sparked a strong drive to paint walls large-scale and find mechanisms of making a creative lifestyle sustainable through cross-disciplinary creative practice, education and exploration.

His current canvas and wall murals are an exploration of past and present techniques and styles, exploring classical oil painting styles in the studio and translating them into public domain.

He takes influence from the visual vocabulary of his collage work and often seeks visual guidance from collaborations with photographers. This forms the foundation to find the dialogue with work grounded in nature and impassioned social narrative.

Born & bred in Cape Town, Chomper was actually a professional downhill skateboarder before he started surfing. He was SA Champ in 2016 and took part in the international circuit, until a knee injury & surgery took him out of action. After the rehab & healing phase, he decided to get into surfing & shaping boards came along with it.

It’s not often you walk into a working environment and can tangibly feel the creative energy bouncing off the walls. The addition of a rad ping-pong table might have helped but the ambience of magic, family, and pure vibes at Chomper Surfcraft is truly something special in its own right.

Have you spotted Henry Muller’s iconic, bright orange Chomper van driving around town? Well, we followed it all the way to his factory in Woodstock where this local surfboard crafter is seriously making waves (couldn’t help it).

At 25, Henry is proving that the future of Cape Town really does belong to young creatives. And it all started on the first day of his second year in college. The day he went home to his parents after one class and told them, “If I drop out now, we can still get the deposit back.”

Sometimes, it’s the bold, unconventional moves that separate the extraordinary from the status quo. Henry used the return deposit to start up his own business, one which has him creating boards like nobody else in the city.

“Chomper”, you might wonder?

“When I was born, my sister’s favourite TV programme was called The Land Before Time. There was a baby T-Rex in the show named Chomper.

“When my parents brought me home from the hospital for the first time, she exclaimed, “It’s Chomper!” And the name stuck ever since.”

Chomper Surfcraft is taking surfboards out of the production line and putting the focus back into the realm of relationships. It’s about a process here. One guided by both artisan and customer, whereby the final product encompasses the journey of handmade production, personalised finishes, and the unique touch of the craftsman at hand.

Perhaps the most striking technique explored by Henry is his use of botanicals that live beneath the resin. Real flowers, frozen in time. The results are simply stunning and like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Clients are invited into the workshop to help layout their floral arrangements – like a fingerprint; one of a kind.

For Henry, it’s all about doing what you love.

“If you find yourself being successful but you don’t love what you do, it’s going to collapse.”

And success?

“There isn’t really a formula. Just put your head down and be consistent. The main thing is just consistency.”

The Chomper boys, along with their spirit for the sea and hearts for art, have reminded us again that local truly is lekker. In fact, it’s incredible…

A bit more about Danielle : Rumour has it that Adam and Eve had been wandering around in their birthday suits for quite a while before they realised that a bit of modesty might be in order. So, they grabbed a few fig leaves (and possibly a sharp twig), started sewing, and inadvertently set in motion a chain of events that rippled through the strands of time and brought you, dear reader, to this very website at this exact moment.

The threads that link the ancient and the modern are an excellent starting point to describe the work of Cape Town based artist, Danielle Clough (Yes, there are two sewing references in that one sentence and no, we do not think it is overkill). Danielle’s colourful, delicate embroidery celebrates the joining of the old with the new in a wistful and playful manner that is thoroughly modern in approach, yet nostalgic at heart. She utilises a craft that is perceived as archaic but takes inspiration from current pop culture icons and the timeless beauty of nature. Her choice of materials also reflects this fascination with time and her vibrant picture-scapes are just as likely to adorn a vintage tennis racquet as they are a rusty chain link fence or a brand-new pair of Gucci sneakers.

This anachronistic approach to art is reflected in Danielle’s previous medium of choice, live visuals. As a VJ (which is not what you think) she repurposed old video footage to create experimental audio reactive visuals for live music events. Using the stage name Fiancé Knowles, Danielle has performed with fellow South African artists such as Haezer, PH Fat, and Hugh Masekela as well as several internationals acts including the Allah Las, Mick Jenkins, Cid Rim, Soulection, The Black Lips and Black Sun Empire. Her work graced the screens at some of the best music events in South Africa like Rocking the Daisies, Grietfest, Synergy, CTEMF, and NuWorld Fest.

Danielle learned the ins and outs of creative expression at The Red and Yellow School where she studied art direction and graphic design. She then began her career as an artist in the fields of visual art, digital design, and the making of bright fluffy things.

When she is not poking sharp objects into other objects Danielle enjoys expanding her artistic horizons and has hosted a show on Assembly Radio, created custom book covers, and worked as contributing photographer to several local and international publications. She has also stepped into the realm of education with online classes and real-world workshops to help aspiring embroiderers learn and appreciate the craft. Danielle spends her free time biking around Cape Town or enjoying an evening drink from the sunroom of her seaside home.

A lot of rather fancy people have enjoyed Danielle’s work (none as fancy as you though). She has been profiled by Instagram, Colossal, CNN, Vogue.com. Beautiful Bizarre, Hi-Fructose and the Creators Project, and has been published in the New York Times, Casa de Jardim, Hemslöjd, Evening Standard, Inspirations and Homespun amongst others. Her work has caught the attention of prominent clients such as Gucci, Adobe, The African Innovation Foundation, the United Nations, Origins, Nike, Kanye West, and Drew Barrymore.

For Danielle, her creative goal is to express the best of human emotion through art, and for each and every stitch to mark the passing of time spent with love and care. If her work evokes the slightest bit of happiness in you, then her intention has been achieved, and her gratitude is intertwined with your joy in a tapestry so radiant that all the colours in the galaxy could not do it justice.
