  • Ep. 106 Pop Culture’s Year in Review
If you had to describe 2017 in one word, what would it be? This year in the world of pop culture took everyone by surprise, and our panelists break down the most memorable moments. Today's episode of the Shrink Tank Podcast includes our panel of Shrinks discussing the psychological themes of pop culture. These themes include political anxiety, cultural division, and speaking out against injustice.

"The one thing I'm hopeful for is that millennials and other younger people, as well as women, are jumping into politics and leadership. The old way of thinking needs to die out."

In our Being Human segment, a new study compares the performances of elite male and female tennis players. These recent findings revealed that men were more likely than women to buckle under pressure during intense match moments. One possible explanation they cited was cortisol levels, the stress level tends to increase more rapidly in men than in women. Those spikes can hurt performance. This week's article inspired our Shrinks to discuss the evolutionary perspectives of the fight-or-flight response for each gender.

And lastly, we reveal our 2017 Champion of Mental Health. This year's winner was John Green, who was recognized for his sensitivity and advocacy of mental health awareness and change. His works, inspired by his own struggles with mental health, reflect a real and honest perspective of why mental health advocacy matters.

  • Ep. 105 Santa is #FAKENEWS
Why is Santa #FAKENEWS? We've noticed that parents seem to lie to their kids around the holidays. So in response, we're debunking the dishonesty of parenting in the holidays. Is it a good thing? A bad thing? If you're a parent, should you do it? Today's episode of the Shrink Tank Podcast includes our panel of Shrinks exchanging their favorite memories of crazy family dysfunction that undoubtedly follow the holidays.

"My father and my step-mother decided to take us to nudist hot spring on Christmas Day."

In our Being Human segment, we switch gears to a more serious topic. This week's article inspired our Shrinks to discuss the level of confusion that men have associated with sexual consent and sexual interest. This study touches on the factors of how far along people were in a sexual interaction, the past sexual experience between the studied pairs and even myths about rape. Our panel of Shrinks uses the current climate of sexual assault and harassment claims as a catalyst to discuss the importance of highlighting a call for change.

The Disaster Artist is a film based on the book by Greg Sestero,  starring brother duo James Franco and Dave Franco. This story tells the tale of the making of the infamous film, The Room. • Ep. 103 How “Wonder” Explores Post-Traumatic Growth & Resilience
"Wonder" is a touching film inspired by the novel by R.J. Palacio, following a young boy with Treacher Collins. Treacher Collins is a syndrome that changes the bone-structure of the face, resulting in facial differences. This movie, featuring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay, is using the box office to raise awareness for how these facial differences result in social and emotional challenges for someone.

Despite raising awareness, "Wonder" highlights the importance of the psychological elements of post-traumatic growth and resiliency.
Throughout this episode of the Shrink Tank Podcast, our panel of Shrinks gives homage to "Wonder" by discussing their own serious and funny examples of post-traumatic growth and resilience. These stories inspire a discussion on how social support, a sense of humor and the right mindset all aid in post-traumatic growth and being resilient.

In our Being Human segment, we discuss the findings of how being too intelligent can impact your leadership skills. Our panelists discuss the differences between IQ scores in comparison with emotional intelligence, communication styles, and other information processing.
In lieu of our Doctor's Orders segment, we discuss Shrink Tank's six nominees for the 2017 Champion of Mental Health.

To be nominated, a candidate had to have gone public with their personal connection to mental illness or traumatic experiences and have used their celebrity status for advocacy and awareness.

In other words, it wasn’t just about them sharing a struggle, but also steps they had taken—or were taking—to manage their mental health.
