After spending three years with the ascetic Samanas, Siddhartha and Govinda hear rumors about Gotama, the Buddha, and his teachings. Gotama is said to have conquered worldly suffering and broken free from the cycle of rebirth. The two friends, curious about the legend, decide to leave the Samanas and find the Buddha to hear his teachings firsthand, despite the skepticism of their own teacher.
