Publisher's Summary:
To the people of Bend of the River Road, Maggie Barnes is "the Barnes woman with all the problems." To her family, she is the unpredictable wife, elusive mother, and adored daughter-in-law, and to her maid, Pearl, she is the mistress who must be cared for like a child. Between the suicidal lows and delirious highs, young Hattie Barnes struggles to find a place in her mother's heart. She observes her mother's vain attempts at normalcy, and then watches as she is driven off to the hospital psychiatric ward. Only later will Hattie discover the deep-seated hopes and fears of the woman she loves unconditionally, and her inevitable connection to her family's past. In heartfelt and potent prose, through Hattie's hushed voice, Sights Unseen tells the story of a troubled relationship and the courage it takes to see it through.

Critic Reviews:
"[The] story of family dislocation and crisis in restrained prose of unflinching clarity, with a honing eye for the small domestic details that conjure a time, place, and emotional atmosphere." (Publishers Weekly)

Kaye Gibbons goes straight to your heart. And she has Southern feeling down pat. She is a great author and this is one of my favorite of hers.
Poignant, Thought-Provoking
Quite a book! Not what I expected after reading The Virtuous Woman by the same author. It has its own strengths...very thought-provoking, poignant. My heart broke for Hattie who tried so very hard to help her mother and find the love that she needed so much. I just wanted to hug her and tell her what a wonderful person she was!
I loved the book no matter how difficult it was to read at some points.
I look forward to enjoying other books by Kaye Gibbons!
Perfect condition.
Almost. Perfect condition.
Living with mental illness.
This is a story of family pain resulting from the mom's bipolar disorder. Hattie, a child tells the story of her need for love and the unease she felt every hour of the day. She and her older brother suffered as a result of the Mom's problem. They never felt they could have friends to visit and they were constantly on edge about being embarrassed in public. Dad was devoted to his wife and consequently she took all of his energy and much of his time. The one source of caring for the children was Pearl. She was a remarkable black woman. Pearl loved the children and also loved and could soothe their mom when she was in distress. The few characters in this story were well drawn. There was the family of three, Pearl, and a wealthy grandfather who made matters worse. He cared for his disturbed daughter-in-law, but rejected her young son. Emotionally Freddy was damaged by his mother and also by his grandfather. This felt like a true picture of a family living with mental illness. The story moves at a good pace and the writing is excellent The book is easy to read, and everything about the book is well done.
