Before this Daniel had been asked to interpret the dreams and sign of others. Now the Lord gives him a dream of his own. The previous chapter discussed the events after the Medes and Persians conquered Babylon. Now in retrospect the text in this chapter contains Daniel's vision of the four beasts which he received in the first year of the Babylonian king Belshazzar. Seen in ver. 1. Are the rise of the beasts, and the description of them, ver. 2–8. the judgment that God will bring on them. The last beast will be the most severe, before the beginning of the Messianic Kingdom which will be ruled by the Son of God which we know as Jesus. In ver. 9–14 Daniel is given understanding of the vision and was greatly affected by it. Following this in ver. 15–18. the fourth beast is emphasized and a full account is provided. In ver. 19–27 the future last empire is seen as very troublesome which produces a world leader that is different from all the previous ones.
