That was 14 years ago. The second-generation daughter of Indian immigrants who built and sold a software company, she talks about turning a family foundation into an NGO now reaching around 12 million lives across India, why her father cast the only vote against her appointment, and why she treats donors as investors. Her core message, passed down from her father: give often, give early, and give more than your money.--Significant Women is a podcast about family, wealth, and what it takes to hold both together across generations. Each episode, Georgia Barkell sits down with a woman from a significant family, entrepreneurs, matriarchs, inheritors and the next generation, to talk about the things that rarely get said out loud: the values, the pressure, the responsibility, and what legacy really means when real money and real family are involved. If you come from a family like this, or you're building one, these are conversations you don't get to have anywhere else.New episodes monthly on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.Hosted by Georgia Barkell, founder of Kinexis, an independent advisory firm helping families navigate the business of being a family.www.kinexis.au-------*At 00:03:13, Megha misspoke: the law that opened the US to Indian graduates was the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, not the Civil Rights Act.

Amelia is the third generation of a family whose wealth was built in energy and infrastructure, though she didn't find out the family was on the rich list until a teacher told her in year 8. She breaks down the strict anti-nepotism rules she grew up under, why she bootstrapped her own businesses instead of taking a leg up, and what she's learned working with ultra-wealthy families about the thing that actually decides whether wealth survives: not the money, but the people. Her core message, if you don't invest in the humans, no structure will hold the wealth together.

Georgia Barkell explains why she started Significant Women. In her advisory work with significant families, she kept coming back to five forms of capital, financial, social, intellectual, cultural and human, and found that while financial wealth creates the environment for a family to pursue shared goals, it's the human relationships and communication that actually hold a family together. The most interesting conversations came from women almost entirely absent from how this world gets talked about, and with a significant share of the coming intergenerational wealth transfer heading to them, their perspective matters more than ever.

Deshelle grew up in a multi-generational construction family, calling the business her family's "first-born child," and later returned to help govern the Smithbridge Group. She breaks down the clash between a founder's risk-taking and an inheritor's duty to preserve, the invisible work women do to keep a family system intact, and how severe postpartum depression forced her to confront the limits of hyper-productivity, something she couldn't out-work her way through.
