A Signify Academy webinar recording, presented by Joshua Welch Senior Lighting Designer, Hoare Lea.

Light is undervalued not because it lacks impact, but because we’ve failed to explain it.
This webinar shows you how to change that, and turn insight into opportunity.

Why “light is light” is a costly misconception

When light gets reduced to numbers, specs, and minimum standards, its value disappears before the conversation even starts. This session breaks down why that happens and why it matters.

Value isn’t fixed, it’s framed

Light doesn’t just have functional value. It has financial and emotional value too but only if it’s framed in a way people can understand and care about.

Why lighting feels like a ‘niche’ (and why it isn’t)

Lighting isn’t niche, it touches almost everything. It only feels niche because we’ve done a poor job of explaining what it actually does and why it matters.

How better framing creates real opportunity

By changing how we talk about light, we change how it’s perceived. That shift opens the door to better projects, stronger differentiation, and a much bigger share of the pie.

The City of Oulu, in collaboration with Signify, partnered on an innovative experiment on Saaristokatu, a busy downtown street in the City of Oulu (Finland). This project aimed to enhance traffic safety by automatically increasing street lighting brightness when emergency vehicles approach an intersection, particularly during dusk.
The initiative leverages advanced wireless lighting control system, integrated with Oulu’s traffic light benefit system for emergency vehicles, known as HALI.

For the HALI (1st generation) - this idea came from Jukka Talvi.

HALI - Interact - Jani Koppelo & Mika Rintelä - this development face is often referred to HALI2

What are the main reasons that consumers are looking for connected lighting at home, or to put it the other way round, what does connected home lighting offer consumers that conventional lighting does not and how does connected lighting play into the smart home ecosystem?
Learn more about the connected consumer.

In today’s episode, we’ll talk about the present moment in LED and connected LED lighting, and take a little peek into what may be coming in the near future. The EU’s revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), adopted in 2024, is accelerating digital system and energy efficiency upgrades across Europe’s commercial building stock. The EPBD is driving change not just for the largest facilities, but for smaller offices, warehouses, and retail spaces as well.

LightingEurope very recently published a position paper on artificial light at night.

Artificial lighting is a vital part of life and well-designed installations using quality products and control systems are fundamental to providing the right environment be it for transportation, work, play, leisure, sport or other activities. Good lighting facilitates these activities and through it a sense of wellbeing, comfort, safety and security. All of this in turn helps to support and generate the economy.
