Today I was able to have a conversation with Alaina and Ricky about the raising of their Deaf daughter, Raina. 

I was intrigued by this family after seeing them on @WhyISign on Instagram. Alaina and Ricky are a part of a very small number of parents that learn sign language when they learn that their child is deaf and I wanted to know why. I wanted to know “why” because it is extremely rare. It’s an unfortunate reality that deaf children have to live with, being a part of the family but not being able to communicate with anyone in the family.

I wanted to have this conversation because I think it is worthy of recognizing these parents and their choice to learn American Sign Language and allowing Raina access to language from day one.
