Council of Kings

Silence Comes Closest.

Listen Later

Hey friends,

I’m still integrating that big spiritual purge that happened in November.

I made this video some weeks after the purge, reflecting on life and asking myself, “What can I now say about the nature of life?”

It turned out that the answer was, “I can’t really say much of anything,” hahah.

There’s a deepening feeling, especially after the purge, that silence is the purest message.

Life is simply here. Words always miss. When you speak of one aspect of this boundless smorgasbord, you draw attention to that aspect and diminish the seeming importance or validity of other aspects. But there are infinite aspects, modes, possibilities, ways of being with this aliveness. And in a deep sense they’re all valid. They’re all expressions of being — ways this aliveness can dance with itself.

At the end of the day, who knows? Nothing can be said.

And yet, and yet… Simultaneously, the heart knows. It can open to what cannot be spoken. It can discover a peace that surpasseth understanding. Smack in the midst of our chaotic lives, we can discover an opening — a presence of grace that never leaves us, even as all else melts away like sand castles devoured by ocean waves. Miracle of miracles, we can learn to rest with this grace. We can discover that we are personally loved by this grace. We can intuit it as eternal life for all. We can come to deeply trust this grace, abide as grace, and therein lies simple freedom.

Only when we place unspeakable Loving Grace at the center of our lives, are we then guided along the ‘narrow path’ that brings about heaven on earth. Our north star becomes the point at the center of the cross. We become single-pointed toward the bullseye of God — of Christ’s self-giving love. This leads us squarely to here-now, again and again, with ever-deepening capacity to be in right relationship with everything and everyone. ♰

This is my current seeing. As always, receive from it what you will.

Words from this video:

“It feels like silence may be the purest, the purest and most honest message that could be delivered. I can’t say anything final about anything.”

“This is here. Check it out. I mean, look at this. What is this basket of bizarreness? What is this tactile frenzy of ferocious flamingness? What is this jamboree, this jubilee, this cosmic shebang of artistry? Let yourself be bowled over. Let yourself be regaled, astonished.”

“The astoundingness is cumulative over time. It shifts your foundational way of being. You become a poet who’s mesmerized by all of life, all textures of life, and you don’t need to say what it is or know what it is in any final sense.”

“It includes everything and it also disappears everything in a puff of smoke. It’s a total zero and a total fullness. Numberlessness. No thing and everything.”

“After a noble fifteen-year journey to the heart of reality to discover the mystical truth — I’ve come up empty-handed. Nothing to grasp.”

“And simultaneously we do know it. We know it most intimately. We can’t pin it down, sure — yet we are it. We are this intimacy. We are this artistry. And we know it with mesmerizingly functional, holistic intelligence.”

“We know it so intimately. It’s our children. It’s the light in the eyes of our kids. It’s the kids laughing on the playground. It’s the jazz musicians playing the saxophone on the crowded street corner in Berlin. It’s all of it. And it’s beyond all of it. And it’s a pure silence that is somehow forever untouched.”

“It’s your life exactly as it is. So treasure it, cherish it, check it out. Really look at it. Love it. Be grateful for it. Say thank you. End the war within yourself. See no enemies in this existence. Befriend what is. Be spaciousness.”

What matters, for me, is to be good to people. Practice kindness. Spread love. End war. Set the kids free.

‘Spirituality’ can help us in this: By exploring a fuller range of our immediate naked experience, we can discover interbeing, liberation, freshness, juiciness, grace, love, simplicity, inspiration, and miraculousness. And we can then pour these wonderful qualities into creations and activities that uplift the whole.

Deep spirituality may be the only thing that truly goes to the root of our human squabbles. It has the potential to unravel the sense of separation that leads us into endless violence and suffering.

Spirituality and meta-religion will almost surely continue to be central themes in what I share. Just know that, ironically, I can’t really say anything fully accurate about these topics, hah. Silence swallows all.

Life is here. Check it out. It’s ripe! Nectarous! Succulent! Saturated with eros!
