Here are a few controversial statements:
- Music is still heavily male-dominated.
- The perception of women over 40, in life or in music, is neither true nor fair.
- Local, emerging artists are notoriously struggling to make their careers sustainable.
All the above led, in some way, to establishing Feminista Vinyl (FV) - a record shop located in Melbourne’s suburb of Coburg. It celebrates female-led, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming inclusive bands and artists from all cultures. It is a non-profit run by 6 fabulous founders, who are musicians, social workers or teachers themselves.
Two of them, Trish Hayes and Clare O’Rourke, chat to me about the night the idea was born, their most unusual piece of merch (spoiler alert, it’s not a rare vinyl), their version of a mini music festival and heaps of other things behind their DIY project.
