Lily Baum Pollans is the author of Resisting Garbage: The Politics of Waste Management in American Cities (2021) and assistant professor of urban policy and planning at Hunter College in New York. A main thread of her work examines institutional and infrastructural transformation of solid waste systems in U.S. cities and evaluates the ability of municipalities to influence consumption. A second set of ongoing projects examines urban food systems and food waste, and explores the consequences—technological, social, economic and ecological—of ongoing change in urban food provisioning systems.

History often repeats itself, if lessons go unlearned.

Nearly 250 years ago, with the 1776 publication of Common Sense, and later such works as The Rights of Man (1791/92) and Agrarian Justice (1796), the unsung founding visionary for America, Thomas Paine, sparked an ongoing revolution for equality and modern democracy. Still, work remains to be done.

Fast-forward to the 1972 publication of The Limits to Growth, by the Club of Rome, a 50-year and counting revolution in the global sustainability movement began. Still, work remains to be done. Hence, the Club’s newest co-initiative, Earth4All,  which aims to accelerate the systems-change needed for an equitable future on a finite planet, via transformational economics.

Founded in 1884, the organization is amongst the oldest historical associations in the United States, and the single most respected source for accurate information about Thomas Paine. As co-president of The Club of Rome, along with Dr. Mamphela Ramphele, they are the organization’s first women presidents. The mission of The Club of Rome is to apply holistic, interdisciplinary and long-term thinking to ensure broader societal and planetary wellbeing; to move towards more equitable economic, financial, and socio-political models; ensure an inclusive human dimension to all systems change; and to emerge from emergency. Encompassing the realms of medicine, neuroscience, climate science, and biophilic design, Dr. Duhaime,’s work resides at critical intersections of the brain, climate change, healthcare sustainability, and environmental behavior change. She is a senior pediatric neurosurgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Director of the Center for the Environment and Health. Additionally, Dr. Duhaime is the Nicholas T. Zervas Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School and Faculty Associate of the Harvard University Center for the Environment. She is also the author of Minding the Climate, which investigates the neuroscience of decision-making and how that poses a challenge when it comes to changing our behavior and our consumer tendencies, in the face of climate change.
