  • ඔන්ලයින් එඩියුකේෂන් අනාගතය අනයි ද? - Online Education in Sri Lanka

The free public education system, introduced in Sri Lanka in 1943 from primary up to tertiary levels, created and ensured increased educational opportunities and access for students from economically marginalised families.

At the heart of this system is the traditional classroom which, despite the many institutional and regional disparities, has functioned as a leveller to some extent, bringing students from different economic and cultural backgrounds to a common, shared space. From what we know, physical distancing is going to be inevitable for weeks and, very likely, months to come. In this circumstance, the introduction of online education shifts a significant portion of learning to the student’s home.

Online teaching excludes students who do not have the economic wherewithal to purchase the equipment necessary to connect with their peers and teachers. How many homes from where our students come have electricity and undisrupted internet connectivity? When many working-class families are struggling to find money to feed themselves, can we overburden them with the additional responsibility of purchasing internet data for their children’s education? How many of our students have a learning environment within their homes that is free of disturbance from other members of their families? Have we factored in these realities while hurriedly shifting to online education?

If the Government sees online education as the only way-out, it should take steps to eliminate the cost for both students and teachers by providing the equipment and connectivity. In the least, the shift to online education should not lead to aggravating the inequalities already entrenched in our educational settings.

Further, it is important to address the debilitating economic hardships of thousands of families by expanding the midday meal program, raising the Mahapola payment and increasing student housing. Such measures will ensure students from poor households actually continue their education.

  • කාබනික පොහොර ප්‍රශ්ණයක්ද? - Fertilizing problem in Sri Lanka
the people’s representatives should move forward to implement the decision to use organic fertilizer as it is beneficial to the people, despite the challenges posed during the transition period.
The “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour” National Policy Framework affirms that in order to produce a healthy and productive citizenry, the government must ensure the right of the people to access a non-toxic and balanced diet.  To achieve this objective the government has taken measures to ensure that only organic fertilizer would be used in the agriculture sector in the country in the future. President Rajapaksa emphasized that the programme should be implemented for the benefit of future generations, notwithstanding criticisms from some sections of the society.
Despite attempts to create a shortage, sufficient fertilizer has been imported until next season. Therefore, all cultivation activities can be carried out without any hindrance, the Presidnt said.

  • ඉලෙක්ට්‍රොනික උපකරණ ආනයනය තහනම්! - Sri Lanka Banned Electronic Consumer imports

Sri Lanka's central bank on Sunday further tightened controls on the outflow of foreign currency to combat a growing cash crunch triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Foreign exchange reserves have almost halved since late 2019 to $4 billion after the rupee sank to a record low in 2020.

The economy has been badly hit by the spread of the virus and lockdowns in its worst downturn since independence from Britain in 1948.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka said overseas investments by local firms would be suspended for six months.

The amount of capital that companies and citizens can take out of the island nation would also be restricted, it added. Sri Lanka has already banned imports of Electronics goods to combat the foreign currency outflows.

The government is planning to extend the import ban to mobile phones, computers and electronic consumer goods, local media reported recently.

The central bank said in a statement that the restrictions were to "assist and maintain the financial system's stability."

International rating agencies have expressed concern over Sri Lanka's ability to service its huge foreign debt.

But central bank governor W.D. Lakshman has said the country will meet its debt obligations, which amount to $3.6 billion in the next six months.

The country's debt has ballooned over the past two decades after the financing of several infrastructure projects that critics say have become white elephants.
