If you buy a pint at 3pm on a Tuesday you’ll pay £3 and are probably an alcoholic. Fast forward to 8pm on a Saturday and that same pint in that same pub will cost you £8.

Although I don’t drink alcohol so this doesn’t affect me. But that’s not the point. We don’t just ignore things that don’t affect us. This is known as dynamic pricing or price surging.

On paper, it’s like taking a shit in the woods in the middle of winter - a pain in the ass although ultimately harmless. But in reality, every company and their dog are trying to incorporate it into their business model.

And during a cost of living crisis where households are trying to budget this is causing more headaches than speed eating an ice creme. Let’s look at how it works, when it is appropriate to use and when it really fucking isn’t.

So it turns out Amazon's contactless stores were actually powered by 1000s of Indian workers. Who else had that on their 2024 bingo card? When Amazon Go was launched in 2018 they were presented as cashierless shops that ran on AI.

But today we learned that AI was actually powered by low-paid staff on the other side of the world doing the checks and balances. So unless at Amazon HQ AI stands for “Actually Indians” this should set off alarm bells.

HP's CEO has confirmed their long term objective is to make printing a subscription. Good luck with that. Last year HP remotely updated their printer's firmware so they wouldn't work with 3rd party ink cartridges. And it was as welcome as when Apple put U2s album on everyone's iPod in 2014. HP are currently in the middle of a lawsuit. They claim they've blocked 3rd party ink because they could be open to hackers and allow viruses in your printer. And print a test page or something, I don't know.

Let's look at why printing can't be a subscription and why this will be the death of their company.

Roku has disabled millions of TVs and streaming devices until you consent to their new terms. Lets talk about it.

So about a year ago Roku announced they'd be updating their terms of service in 2024. You probably didn't hear about it because it was a whole 12 months away, so that's a problem for future you.

Well future you is now current you. And as part of Roku's new terms is a change to how people can dispute issues they're having. Including a forced arbitration agreement basically preventing users from suing or participating in lawsuits against Roku. Which you know, isn't suspicious at all.

Walmart wants to convert your living room TV into a billboard for them.

So two weeks ago it was reported that Walmart wanted to buy Vizio for 2 billion dollars. That's about $9.30 in today's money.

Walmart has historically been Vizio's largest customer and Vizio is historically the largest television brand sold at Walmart by sales and Walmart is moving its focus to its connect service.

This is just another move from a massive retailer to become a data broker. And let's talk about it.
