Some Inaccuracies, but still good

Of particular interest from the US point of view, the book reveals that for three years before his defection in October 2000 Tretyakov worked for the FBI, providing details of residency operations and personnel. Ten months before his defection, the FBI encouraged him to leave but could not tell him the reason: it was hunting a mole who might learn about him. When Tretyakov's defection became public on 30 January 2001 and Robert Hanssen was arrested on 18 February 2001, the press presumed Tretyakov was the one who gave him up. The FBI assured Earley that this was not the case.

Finally, as with all unsourced defector memoirs, one must deal with the question of accuracy. In this case, the narrative contains two technical errors worth noting: (1) reference to Tretyakov as a double agent is incorrect, and (2) the statement that the CIA calls its employees'agents is wrong. Recognizing that independent assessment of Tretyakov's story is desirable, Earley includes a chapter with comments from a high-ranking US intelligence official that addresses the kinds of material Tretyakov provided and affirms that it included names and saved American lives. Further detail is attributed to other intelligence sources, as, for example, the fact that the bug planted in the State Department conference room in the late 1990s had a miniature battery recharged with a laser beam.

A Compelling Read (or Listen)

Very excellent. Huntford's done an excellent job here of comparing Scott's and Amundsen's expeditions to the South Pole, alternating back and forth between the two parties, beginning with their backgrounds. It's easy to see who's the villain in Huntford's view; Scott comes across here as nothing more than a stubborn, arrogant, unintelligent bumbler. I'm thinking this is not the most balanced of accounts, but it's certainly well-told! Sometimes it feels a little too generalized or surfacy, but this is an abridged version of Huntford's book, so I imagine there are quite a few details that got left out for time's sake. In any case, I highly recommended it.

I have always admired Amundsen for his accomplishments. Learning how diligently he prepared and approached each goal sheds light on why this admiration is well-deserved.

Very well done. The book did not contain a large variety of character voicing however the performer kept it very interesting throughout.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

RF Scott should have stayed home and read Amundsen's diaries.

Great story, great history!

Incredible story

After 1912 Scott was presented as the perfect hero with many facts hidden. 50 years later the truth about his weakeness and management style were finally presented with the historical facts. This books is from that period. This said the book is excellent.

Simply fantastic

While other stories of great voyages offer great insights, the example and counter-example of Scott and Amundsen is the best there is. Two people trying to achieve the same goal at the same time with completely different philosophies. To hear Amundsen's life of preparation and attention to detail versus Scott's uneven preparation and hasty plans is both a great story and a great life lesson.

What Goes On Here?

If you are a small town and ANYTHING has EVER happened in your town no matter HOW weird, you have got a tourist attraction!!

Much Better if Bill Geist had read it himself...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Some of the stories were entertaining. But the narrator never caught my attention, or I was so disappointed that it wasn't Bill Geist. I love his voice and the way he turns a phrase. So although I did give the book a chance... It just never really grabbed me but for a few stories. SIGH!!! - So I suggest you buy the actual book and you can hear his voice in your head instead. (Yes, I know it was my fault for not listening to the preview...but previews don't play on an iPad because Audible still is requiring Flash on their website to play the stuff... Audible... get with the future)

Great story, awkward reading

Read the print version years ago and am now listening to it for summer motivation. Love the story, although I recognize that he's not as unique as his writing makes him out to be ??? there are many more like him who run ultra marathons ??? but, as is the case for most public faces, he's got the charisma to share it.

While I would have preferred the author's reading, the narrator does a fine job. But, there are numerous pregnant pauses throughout. Up to 5 seconds of silence in the middle of a chapter ??? and I'm listening at 1.5x! At times I can even hear the inhalation of the narrator for a moment before the narration continues. It may simply be poor editing, but it sure makes it awkward to listen. I prefer a continuous flow with short pauses in between chapters.

Excellent, Loved It! Ignore the negative reviews.

I thought this was a great audio book. I'm so glad I bought it. It's well worth the money (credit), and I'm not even a runner. I run a little on the treadmill, but mainly I ride a road bike and do weight training. It's absolutely incredible what this athlete can do. The dedication, discipline, and physical endurance it takes to run the distances he does is mind-blowing. I have seen a few interviews with him and think he's got a great attitude and personality. A few other people wrote reviews saying that he was bragging and self congratulatory. Well, I was listening for it and didn't hear anything like that, not even once. Jesus, the guy just spoke of his long distance runs with passion. That's what you buy the book for. I don't know what those people were expecting, but if you want a great book by a great athlete, this is it!

Not as self-congratulating as others have said

Basically a story about your average doofy guy who runs really long races as his way of releasing steam -- lots of amusing anecdotes about running long distance races, so if you're expecting insight into what an ultra-runner might eat / drink / train like, you won't be disappointed. As a runner who listened to this while doing training runs for an upcoming marathon, I liked the story and found it motivating. Most people who are into running at all know who Dean is at this point, so it was interesting to learn more about him as a person and how he became the runner he is today. Sure it's a little "I can run 226 miles", but if you could run that far, and did so, wouldn't you brag a little in a book about yourself?

Window into the FBI Hostage Negotiator's World

This is a great audiobook. It provides a window in to the world of the FBI hostage negotiator. The book takes you into the front lines of high profile, potentially and actually violent confrontations between criminals and the FBI. If you have an interest in the FBI, hostage rescue operations, SWAT teams, negotiating in high stakes, or just the psychology of hostage taking criminals, this is a must read/listen. Highly recommended.

I like this guy!

You'll like and respect the guy as he leads you on a journey through the history of HRT and it's predecessors as he was there trough it all. And the guy is a great father and Christian to boot. This is the kind of guy who you know would be happy to shake your hand and invite you to church. But, man has he been through it. Well written and narrated. If you buy it you will enjoy it.

An Enjoyable "Listen"

The pleasure of so many audiobooks comes down to the combination of a good yarn and good narrating, This book is a good story; he provides an interesting biographical sketch and focuses in on the key cases in which he was involved, but not so much that they become boring; and the narration makes it very interesting to listen to.

The author spends the last chapter or so offering his views on the Waco incident, and then more time is spent offering views on the state of current policing and negotiating. Fortunately this is at the end of the book so if you're not interested it can be easily skipped, without making you think that you're not getting your money's worth.

All told, it was enjoyable and easy to listen to.

Very Interesting Storyline!

This was different than I expected but I enjoyed the book very much. I enjoyed the details on how Van Zandt got hs start and worked his way up through the ranks to a hostage negotiator. You'll enjoy the stories!

I have been a fan of Peter Mayle since my first listen to "French Lessons". This is an excellent and entertaining review of all things "provencale". Not for the faint of heart or casual tourist, this is deep journey, mostly on foot and often diverted. This feast leaves you both satisfied yet clamoring for more. What next?

Excellent narrative

I really liked this book. It is, however, a tactical narrative. There's really nothing about human drama or character development and stuff like that. If you want to know what modern combat is like this book is perfect. It's a battle from a Special Forces' unit's perspective, well told, and nothing more. I recommend it if you're interested in learning about warfare.

Excellent First-Hand Accout of SF in Iraq

While I love stories--especially books, but just about all other media--about gung-ho, testosterone-driven SOF missions, I'm always a little suspicious of the content's authenticity; especially when its a first-hand account of some super-secret, confidential, need-to-know operation you've almost never heard of. But the Battle of Debecka Pass is probably one of the most well-known of SOF battles in Iraq, perhaps because--as Antenori explains in the book--his primary job after the fact was to tell his story. And in "Roughneck" he does it extremely well, never veering off into the dubious land of self-mythologizing and John Wayne/Green Beret legend. Instead the book is grounded in innumerable--though interesting--details,and Antenori is just as concerned with telling THE STORY, as he is in telling HIS STORY (if that makes any sense).

Pulls few punches

In Roughneck Nine-One Frank pulls few punches. While there are some details that obviously cannot be divulged, Frank does a great job painting vivid images of not only the main battle, but the path leading up to it. His descriptions of events are engrossing and the reader soon finds himself swept up in the pace of battle. The characters are well developed, the action is hot, and the simple objectivity and decisiveness of Frank's character lend great credit to himself and his story-telling.

This is also a great read for those who know the familiar burden of political BS that somehow runs around bitting people in the ass in the military, and an eye opener to those who do not.

One would be uninformed to think that even Special Forces teams are immune to red tape and political wrangling.

All around, a great read! Couldn't put it down.

Having served in Special Forces during the Vietnam Era, I was particularly interested to see that while some things have changed over the years, the core issues which define U.S. Army Special Forces remain the same.

Such a heroic bunch of survivors told from within the authors mind and emotions. Really a true miracle they survived a plane crash in a mountain range, lived in it for 60 days and then fuelled on meat from dead bodies walked 70 miles to find help

Best book I have read from audible.

A personal account of how a young man escaped from almost certain death, after a plane crash in the Andes and what he gained from the ordeal. Beatifully written and inspiring.

Just awful!

What a con job. I have never read anything in Fitzgerald, Wodehouse or Allen about detailed bowel movements and smells or wieners. After a 1/2 hour of listening to this grossness, I deleted it from my ipod.

Skip it

I am far from a prude, but after listening to the first two essays, I turned it off - it felt to me like a school child saying naughty words just to get a reaction. Skip this one for sure.

You'll hate this more than you know

The author has the unique talent of boiling every human emotion down to clich?. No doubt Ames has his penis covered, but if youre looking for human insight youll no doubt find more reading a bottle of shampoo than you will listening to this audio book. And thats another curious thing the Jonathan Ames is a truly horrible reader. Why would the publisher allow him to narrate

Wiener Man

Two or three pieces into this collection, I thought - this is a guy who writes about his wiener. Turns out I was more right than I knew - apparently, Mr. Ames main though not exclusive ouevre in this and other books is his wiener and other humiliating, enslaving parts of anatomy.

The theme weaving through these essays is doubt at middle age by a writer on the margins, living at times with his parents. Mid-life crisis, as it is more colloquially known. The stories are tidy, engaging, if a little self-obsessive.

Wileycoyote gives it four beeps and sez check it out if you're a middle-aged guy mostly. I suspect the ladies will have sharply diverging views on this, but what do I know, I'm a guy.

Depressing

The writer seemed to be depressed and initially I thought this would be funny,but it didn't prove so.There were some amusing part,but nothing redeeming.This was a wasted credit.Furthermore,the narrator didn't speak in an enthusiastic manner,so it didn't hold my attention well.
