    Title: Reckless Eyeballing
    Author: Ishmael Reed
    Narrator: Rodney Gardiner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-15-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
It's the 1980s and the politics of the New York theater scene have taken yet another turn.
Masochism is out and feminism is in, Jews are out and Germans are in, race is out and gender is in, and everyone's fighting (and rewriting) for a piece of the pie. Jewish director Jim Minsk disappears during a trip to the South. Black playwright Ian Ball writes the all-female play Reckless Eyeballing in hopes of getting off the "sex-list." Preeminent playwright Jack Brashford, claiming the Jews stole all his black material, decides to write about Armenians. In the background, an unknown assailant dubbed the "Flower Phantom" runs loose through the city shaving heads of prominent black feminists (to the secret delight of black men).
In this hilarious, devastating, but also deeply sympathetic novel, Ishmael Reed turns characters on their backs, sides, tops and bottoms to expose the multiple hypocrisies at the heart of American culture.
    Members Reviews:
    Double Headed
Reckless Eyeballing is told primarily through Ian Ball's perspective -- a Creole playwright who is trying to get his play, also entitled "Reckless Eyeballing," into a popular theatre. The story is about his encounters with racists and feminists who want to hinder or change his play to suit their needs. Other, more minor characters include Tremonisha Smarts -- a feminist playwright, Jim Minsk -- a Jewish director, and Lawrence O'Reedy -- a racist detective.
While Reed seems to poke equal amounts of fun at everyone and their faults, it seems to me that feminists get the short end of the stick. While there is one redeemable feminist, she is only really that way in the very end of the novel, and basically turns out not to be a feminist at all. In one of the most humorous parts of the novel, the "Flower Phantom," a man in a beret, trench coat, and mask goes around New York City shaving off prominent feminists hair and leaving them with a Chrysanthemum. The black men of NYC secretly rejoice and praise this man, as the feminists seem to run everything in the city, and have been putting men on the "sex-list" for many years, affecting who is published, praised, paraded around town for their woman-friendly attitudes. Ian Ball hopes to get taken off the sex-list with his play, "Reckless Eyeballing," which is about a black man who was lynched for looking at a white woman for too long. 20 years after the fact, the woman in question wishes to take the dead man's skeleton to court in order to sentence him to death. Outrage and hilarity ensue.
This story is definitely easy to read if you take it at face value; it's short, seems pretty straight forward, and for the most part has simple characters that are easy to identify and label. However, if you treat this as a true Ishmael Reed book, you could read it dozens of times and still come out with something new each time. While I did not love the book, I did enjoy the amazing amounts of layering that Reed accomplishes.

Harriet Goodman, brave, wry and handsome, is determined to triumph no matter what. With a decade of therapy under her belt and a new large inheritance, it seems there is nothing she cannot achieve. When she finds herself in charge of a school full of precocious little girls, rich in everything but care, she vows to make their childhoods amongst the happiest ever spent. For everyone knows that early years passed in delightful ways can you set you up for life. But can this ambitious new departure spill some retrospective sweetness onto Harriet's own harsh beginnings, or better still cancel them out altogether? Will the family she's estranged from ever grant her the recognition she craves? Written with deep psychological insight and coal-black humour, The Small Hours is a stunning meditation on love, self-love and forgiveness, and their shadowy opposites.

What's a great character like you...
...doing in a plot like this?
I ordered this book because I have read Susie Boyt's pieces in the FT and liked her intelligent, whimsical style. The start of this novel lived up to expectations with the introduction of Harriet Mansfield, a blue-stockinged, competent, Bridget Jones who is just terminating 7 years of psychotherapy and relaunching herself as headmistress of a nursery school for girls. Miss Jean Brody meets Fisher Price. Nursery school for girls? Aren't they all co-ed now? We are starting to lose grip of reality and it bodes ill. Hints of child abuse (suppressed by Harriet's memory) appear. There are amusing scenes - one lonely Sunday afternoon, Harriet decides to make beautiful baskets of marzipan fruit for her charges, it takes much longer than she thinks, and she only gets the final one done 15 mins before school starts on Monday morning. I can relate to that sort of competent, well-intentioned stupidity. But, basically it is down hill from here. There is a mixture of poshness (all the characters are rich and posh) and sadism and cruelty that in my experience do not often go together - yummy mothers are not the sadistic harridans we are cracked up to be. Making a whole novel turn (repeatedly) on this theme, and coming to two climaxes - firstly the threatened suicide of a four year old (by jumping off the school roof) and then the attempted suicide of the head mistress by overdose, is just pathetic. Sorry to give the ending away, but I really don't think I've deprived you of much.
The book is well written and Thomas's narration is good - though her depiction of 'lower class' voices made me wince a bit - so this wasn't a total waste of time. Still, my overall feeling is that this book was written to be fashionable - Harriet was physically abused by her posh mother; her brother was sexually abused by his banker father - not to express the deep experiences and feelings of a serious author. Thus, not what I am looking for in a novel.

kind of funny, but mostly boring
basically the author is just ranting. it's kind of funny, but there is nothing to tie it together.
Make sure you know what you're getting into!
As other readers have said, this book is NOT for everyone. HEAVY focus on popular culture, dripping with sickly sweet sex, as described by adolescence. I understand that's what the author was shooting for... but it made me feel dirty and annoyed.
Had hoped it would be more like what the screenplay/adaptation has been described as, but not so much.
    Controversial, Heartbreaking, & Thought Provoking
First, this book is not for everybody...maybe not even for me although I did appreciate it for what it was. It is a raw, realistic look about people who live for celebrity. The story is set in Hollywood, as it should be, yet the characters easily relate as human beings striving for recognition everywhere, I think. Lots of characters here and everyone has a story...sometimes their stories intersect.
This novel has so many elements to it: it's shocking, crude, violent...definitely for adults only...nothing is taboo in it...but it is also heart wrenching and thought provoking.
Narration is done by the author, Bruce Wagner, which I was wary of at first but I think he did a fine job overall.
Word is that this book has been adapted [by the author] into a movie called 'Maps to the Stars' which will be made later this year. I would think that many things would be changed for the movie--characters and stories will be thinned out or combined, for example. This will make a very interesting movie.

Lettie Mason, a proper yet headstrong Boston schoolteacher, journeyed to a small Louisiana town after the Civil War to expose the wretched rogue who'd killed her brother. The man was known as Thorn--a man with a reputation for both murder and mercy. She was sure he had killed her brother, but she learned that he also helped save the homes and lives of many townspeople. How could she reconcile these two different images of the same man--and how could she accept the overwhelming desire, the thrilling passion, and the reckless abandon he aroused deep within her?
    Members Reviews:
An amazing take on a tumultuous time
Would you listen to Southern Rapture again? Why?
Yes. The story and the performance are outstanding.
What did you like best about this story?
This is a story that sticks with you. I first read it and then added the narration and listened.
What about Kati Brazdas performance did you like?
The narrator's performance was excellent. She captured the voices and nuances in feelings and emotions perfectly.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It could have been, but my schedule allows for a chapter or 2 each evening.
    Any additional comments?
In all the books from this period from this author, the stories are very formulaic. This one is completely different. It's organic. I expect people would be offended by some of the character portrayals but it's really not about inequality. It is how that evil was overcome. It's about so many different viewpoints and perspectives, caught in a tumultuous, uncertain time. People struggling to survive and get through so much tragedy and loss. How they held each other up and protected each other during the difficulties. Their loyalty and faithfulness no matter how convoluted.
There were a number of parts that brought excitement and suspense to the story. I believe that is what made it so enjoyable. All the development and discovery that occurs throughout the book sprinkled with humor and natural human emotions. The hero is always there protecting the heroine. Even though she doesn't know, his motivation is honorable, although how he goes about it is unconventional.
If you enjoy old movies or TV shows with smart women and strong heroes, you will love this story and see all the extraneous parts and circumstances are part of the difficult time they were living through during reconstruction.

    Could have been better.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The only part i enjoyed was the beginning when it was set prior to the war in Burma. It was very dragged out and quite boring.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I just didnt enjoy it much at all.

NOTHING. To me he sounded like a news reader or documentary narrator.

Yes, it could be a movie as the base idea is quite good. TONI COLLETTE AND JOEL EDGERTON AS THE COUPLE.JACI WEAVER COULD BE THE MOTHER.

The financial slide comes crashing into their lives with a vengeance, and everything they've built up so carefully dissolves into a pool of hopelessness, taking self-respect and relationships with it. Now, the secrets will out and within a year, someone will be dead.

"Buy on a Friday, get home, turn off the phone and emerge on Monday replete with a tale well told. Guilty pleasures? We certainly all have them and this is better than most." (Daily Express)
    Members Reviews:
    Pleasant Surprise
For some reason I was expecting a standard Chick-Lit book and didn't realise this was such a long and at times quite serious story but regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
There are a lot of characters who have their own individual stories but they do interlink and after a bit, and with the great narration, I was able to remember each character and who was who.
The story is pretty much about rich people who, as members of Lloyds of London, now face the prospect of losing everything they own. I didn't feel overly sorry for them but the story kept me riveted and wanting to know how it all pans out for each person/couple.
I always know its a good book when I listen to it not just at the gym but when I go shopping, clean the house, go for a drive etc. I just had to know what happened to everyone.
    I do recommend this book.
Penny Vincenzi of course it was good
I love anything Penny Vincenzi writes but this was so worth reading. Good story great narrater. Well worth it.
    Another wonderful read
As usual her book has an excellent story line, just a pity the ending was 'unfinished' and left me a trifle let down. Did they succeed with the court case or what?
    Jilly Bond was excellent.
    Awful awful snobby characters.
What disappointed you about An Absolute Scandal?
Everything. The narrator's overdone clipped posh accent was sickening after a while and I found myself imitating her (got quite good at it). I carried on listening in the hope they would all die - no such luck. My hopes were raised when it looked like the dreadful, overbearing Flora was going to drown, but somehow she survived. The Lloyds crash caused the poor dears to sell their second or third estates, get rid of the horses and posh cars, and limit their intake of champagne and caviar. Although they had raked money in for years without a second thought. Maybe I was a bit harsh wishing them all dead, perhaps sticking the whole lot of them in a multi-storey council block with broken lifts and the odd drug dealer next door would be more appropriate.

    Publisher's Summary:
What began as an innocent love affair for one young woman, Marta Pea, in Costa Careyes, Mexico in 1969, sets in motion a series of events that spans the next 30 years.
This is the story of South American drug lords Antonio Espinoza and Javier Rodriguez, and their violent quest for power. In a sweeping family saga, we meet the women who love them and the children they vow to protect at any cost. With a complex web of interconnected families, this gritty novel delves into the lives of a power hungry clan, following the rise of their business, the destructive path of their torrid and erotic love affairs, and the struggle to balance intense greed with devout family loyalty.
Strong women face tragedies that test their will and their commitment to the men they passionately desire. As young girls grow into women, their traumatic pasts will drive their actions and force them to make gut-wrenching decisions. With murder, drug trafficking, dirty politics, illegal gambling, prostitution, obsessive love affairs, and family strife, The Cartel is a whirlwind in the vein of Mario Puzo's The Godfather.
    Members Reviews:
    Surprisingly good.
I was very pleased with this story of love, hatred, betrayal l, hope and overall overcoming hope. 2 thumbs up
    Not another vomit!
Does everyone really run out and vomit when they see or hear something upsetting?
Does everyone make love like they are slurping an ice cream cone?
Does every conversation sound like a trite soap opera?
Do twenty something people all equate pop psychology with wisdom?
They do in this book, which reads more like a cheesy, B movie screen play than anything you could call literature. Anyone who really liked this must have spent a lot more time watching TV than reading good novels.
As for the narrator, you'd expect someone with a Latina surname to do a lot better with Spanish accents than a generic foreign language "r" trill characteristic of movies from the 1940's. Or was that her Russian accent? And then there were her "ing" endings pronounced "ink" and "ong" endings pronounced "ong ga."
Cardboard characters, trite dialogue, annoying narrator. Don't darken your cloud with this one.
    Really good!!
I could not get enough of this book and found myself enthralled by the story line and the rich characters. The whole book appeared to get better with every short chapter.
That dude is crazy, this book was great!
If you could sum up The Cartel in three words, what would they be?
    Has it all
    Any additional comments?
Evidentally the previous review was by somebody who has nothing but negative things to look forward to in life. The narrator was awesome, even with her many spanish accents. I finished this audio book in record timing as I just couldnt wait to find out how things played out.
Sorry... But I thought this was horrible.
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    A good story and narration.
Has The Cartel turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Yes.
What aspect of Vivianna Chavezs performance would you have changed?
    The annoying Latino accents.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Cartel?
I really didn't enjoy any part of the book so it's hard to say.
    Any additional comments?
I can't believe I wasted my money on this.

Thrilling, thoughtful, strange, gorgeous, political, and deeply personal, Jennifer duBoiss A Partial History of Lost Causes is a terrific debut novel. What a great book
What did you love best about A Partial History of Lost Causes?
The writing is beautiful, the story compelling.
Have you listened to any of Kathe Mazur and Stephen Hoye ???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The narration is just right for the story. I have listened to these narrators before, and think they are always good.
    Many inaccuracies about Russia
I'm not sure why one would write a book based in Russia and then get so many basic details wrong. What is the point?
The story is not really there. It's a long set of self-pitying reflections.
As for narration, learn some basic Russian pronunciation. Dacha is da-cha, very easy. It's not some weird da-xha sound.

    Release date: 03-20-12
    Publisher: HarperAudio

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The critically acclaimed author of Good-bye and Amen, Leeway Cottage, and More Than You Know returns with a sharply perceptive and emotionally resonant novel about all the ways we talk about one another, the sometimes fine line between showing concern and doing damage, and the difficulty of knowing the true obligations of friendship.
"Did you know that the origin of the word gossip in English is 'god-sibling'? It's the talk between people who are godparents to the same child, people who have a legitimate loving interest in the person they talk about. It's talk that weaves a net of support and connection beneath the people you want to protect."
Loviah "Lovie" French owns a small, high-end dress shop on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Renowned for her taste and discretion, Lovie is the one to whom certain women turn when they need "just the thing" for major life events - baptisms and balls, weddings and funerals - or when they just want to dish in the dressing room. Among the people who depend on Lovie's confidence are her two best friends since boarding school: Dinah Wainwright and Avis Metcalf.
Outspoken and brimming with confidence, Dinah made a name for herself as a columnist covering the doings of New York's wealthiest and most fabulous. Shy, proper Avis, in many ways Dinah's opposite, rose to prominence in the art world with her quiet manners, hard work, and precise judgment. Despite the deep affection they both feel for Lovie, they have been more or less allergic to one another since a minor incident decades earlier that has been remembered and resented with what will prove to be unimaginable consequences.
These uneasy acquaintances become unwillingly bound to one another when Dinah's favorite son and Avis's only daughter fall in love and marry. On the surface, Nick and Grace are the perfect match - a playful, romantic, buoyant, and beautiful pair. But their commitment will be strained by time and change: career setbacks, reckless choices, the birth of a child, jealousies, and rumor. At the center of their orbit is Lovie, who knows everyone's secrets and manages them as wisely as she can. Which is not wisely enough, as things turn out - a fact that will have a shattering effect on all their lives.
An astute chronicler of everything that makes us human, Beth Gutcheon delivers her most powerful and emotionally devastating novel to date. Gossip is a tale of intimacy and betrayal, trust and fidelity, friendship, competition, and motherhood that explores the myriad ways we use and abuse "information" about others - be it true, false, or imagined - to sustain, and occasionally destroy, one another.

What did you love best about Gossip?
I love to be drawn into the lives of the characters and still go away having learned something I can apply to my real life. I loved this story woven around characters I vaguely think I know whose depth I then experience.

    Publisher's Summary:
"It is what it is. That's her car out there and, well, that's her right there. "Jeremy looks at the woman again. There's a few flies dipping in and out of the back of her skull. "What happened to her?" I feel a little uncomfortable. I wasn't really planning to lay it all out like this. "Well, I hate to say this but I killed her." Jeremy nods slowly. He's starting to take this in and I'm relieved. "Don't ask me why. Anything I say is just gonna sound ridiculous." I rub my hand in my hair. I want to appear frustrated. "Things just got out of control."

    Imagine it with another voice
Were you to read this piece, I'm certain you would hear Burgess' voice to be quite different from the voice of the narrator of this audio version.
