Still enjoying it!

Very well written. A woman's voice well captured by a male writer, and the dialogue sounds realistic. The three voices: stories within the story are difficult to follow at first, but this makes the novel all the more intriguing. I'm reading this book very slowly and looking forward to n interesting ending.

Laura es estudiante universitaria en Colombia que sale a caminar un día cuando un hombre le secuestra y le obliga a ... leer un libro sobre una prostituta (Karen) y un taxista quienes se enredan en unos asesinatos del narcotráfico, varios mafiosos, y un maletín lleno de dólares (¡claro!). El [premise] es creativo e interesante y la acción no deja.

ÂLa lectora cuenta dos tramas paralelas: la primera es de Laura y sus captores, y la segunda es la trama del libro que Laura lee. (Además hay dos narrativas menores: un monólogo contado a la prostituta de un ex-amante que parece ocurrir después de los eventos del libro y un diálogo breve entre dos comentadores.)

Las dos tramas invitan la atención: no son nada extremamente original (además de la estructura narrativa con sus tres o cuatro tramas - depende de cómo cuentas), pero tanto la trama de Laura y la de Karen se mueven rápidamente.

A pesar de eso, sentí algo decepcionado al acercarme al final. La velocidad pareció más despacio a pesar de que la acción llega a su clímax. This Book is Rather Violent:

Based on the wow factor of the first novel in this series, I could hardly wait to start the second book, RAGE FACTOR. If you aren't into rape, violence and vigilante revenge, you may want to pass this one. This takes gritty to a new level - it is not for the faint-of-heart!

I really liked the fact that Dixie was still with her paramour, Parker Dunn, from the first story. However, there's plenty of angst between them. There's the issue of the dangerous nature of Dixie's job. Parker is worried that Dixie will get into something she can't handle. The opening chapters of this story prove Parker to be right to worry.

As a native Houstonian, I've enjoyed the generous sprinkling of Houston-area sites and addresses in this series. It is a nice change from the usual addresses in Los Angeles; is just me or are most of the bad guys in crime novels hanging out in LA & San Francisco? I'm glad to see that a few have moved to Houston.

This book has several things going on; it begins with an assault/rapist escaping conviction through his good looks and sincere smiles. The rapist has the prosecutor and Dixie in his sites for vicious retaliation.

In the meantime, Dixie has taken a bodyguard job - protecting the 16 year-old daughter of a famous actress. Threatening notes have been coming for weeks to the actress. The most recent one has promised that the stalker will take his anger out on the daughter.

At the same time, a vigilante group of unknown persons is wreaking vengeance on those miscreants who escape justice in the court system. Dixie is worried that she may know some of the participants. All these strands make for a well-paced book with lots of action - some of it grisly.

Great Yarn

Where does Die With Me rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Ranks in the top 10%. Prior to this reveiw I listened again from beginning to end. The English use the language with such skill and Elena is a master. It is descriptive and transports you into a world of people who have ordinary every day life experiences. There is always a twist in the tail (or should I say tale) and outcomes are not always as deduced by the reader. The chances of a sequal could be possible???

Which character as performed by Ric Jerrom was your favorite?

Mark Tartalia of course - Ric's performance supported the character admirably

really annoying the way the volume changes

The story was nice enough, the performer has nice a way of reading the story accept for one really annoying detail: he changes the volume of his voice. He actually starts whispering when the story asks for it. That's all very realistic and nice, but so terrible annoying when you listening to the book in e.g. your car. I had to change the volume all the time. Stupid and not very practical.

Good solid story

Enjoyed this so much I immedistely downloaded the next book in the series. Interesting characters and though the story was a bit predictable, it was well told. Excellent narration.

First time I've listened to this author, really surprised. Well written story, lots of twists and turns. Love the complexity of the relationships between the detectives and the pathologist. Great narration,,highly recommend

The lead detective, more interesting character than the usual Maverick complecated detectives.

Ending sucked

Good story not too happy with ending I like tidy endings with the culprit banged to rights.:( apart from that I did enjoy the book.

Absent Friends

This is my first book that I have read by S.J. Rozan so I don't have anything to compare it too like previous reviewers. I felt the story plot was well written and it definitely made me want to keep turning the pages. I do feel there was a lot of skipping around. The book is being narrated by 8 main characters between two years (1979 and 2011). I actually had to write down who the characters were so I could follow the story and understand what was going on. Overall a good book and held my attention until the end.

Chin and Smith: Yes Absent Friends: No

ABSENT FRIENDS. . . I found the plot confusing, the flashbacks dizzying, and most of the characters less that life-like. That said, I kept plugging away because of the superb setting Rozan creates, that and that alone makes this book worth reading and may make it a classic. Rozen plucked me from my rural home and kept me anchored in 9/11 and its aftermath.

Powerful

This was an interesting and heart-wrenching account of a group of friends torn apart by a deep secret. It was well written and kept the reader turning the pages quickly.

Nothing is absent in this author's writing

I haven't read the Lehane book that ABSENT FRIENDS is often weighed against or the author's preceding PI series, so I had no pre-defined notion about what this book may, or should, be. While reading, my sense was that the author considered it fundamentally necessary to write about September 11, 2001 and its aftermath -- and drew a perceptive and thought provoking story from within that framework. Ms. Rozan's quiet, eloquent prose must be evocative of what she was feeling -- of what each New Yorker was feeling -- but placed in each character's observations following the attack that, in a poignant sense, encompassed the entire city. This book has an empathetic sensitivity about it, and I can imagine that if you are not predisposed toward that portion of the emotional continuum you may not see the book this way.

ABSENT FRIENDS has been described as a mystery and a thriller, but after reading it, it seems more like a crime novel to me. Ms. Rozan's story is about the life of a heroic FDNY firefighter who died on September 11 and whether activities he may have been involved in earlier in his life should diminish that aura. The book's voice is of profound sorrow and reemerging hope. The narrative has three compelling protagonists: truth, friendship and heroism.

Students love this narrators portrayal!

What did you love best about The Secret Story of Sonia Rodriquez?

My 12th grade students and I read this book each year. Boys and girls alike relate to the characters and situations encountered in the text. They say, "This story is real! It sounds like my family!" I say, Alan Sitomer and Blanca Vasquez are fantastic and engagaing duo!

What about Blanca Vasquezs performance did you like?

My students are predominately Latinos; Blanca sounds like she could be one of my students.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! In fact, I did finish it in two sittings!

Any additional comments?

Your Young Adult Literature selections are invaluable to teachers like me. My policy is to not have students read a book that I haven't "read". I listen to the stories before I turn them into assignments for my students. For my students that struggle the most, I suggest that they purchase the Audible version so that they can keep pace with their peers. Audible and books are a Win! Win! for teachers and students!

A great story

This story is engrossing, funny, and sometimes tragic. The author has such a great style - you feel like you really know Sonia. Down to earth, entertaining, and unique.

A great listen

When I started listening to this book, I was rivited. The narrator's voice is smooth in your ear. A cinderella story, mexican style, that is both interesting, fun, juicy and even has some violence. You are taken away and can't turn it off! My favorite audiobook EVER.

Gentle and undemanding - but enjoyable

I've finished this book and still undecided if I will listen to the series. On the plus side, it's gentle and pleasant and oddly compelling once you get into it, and some of the characters, like Clarissa and her stepdaughter, are very recognisable. Oddly enough, so is Carissa's late husband, even though he never actually appears, having died just before the book starts. Everything his widow says and thinks about him paints a very vivid mind picture.

I thought the picture of the newly widowed Clarissa hitting rock bottom with her confidence in shreds, and then gradually building a new life for herself was well drawn and probably the strongest part. Some of the other characters and situations were less convincing.

The narration is fine on the whole, though the deliberate and very slow diction given to some of the male characters is a bit overdone for me - with some of them I just wanted to get out and push. I found the tying up of loose ends a bit too convenient and predictable but on balance I think this little village saga has probably got me hooked and I'll find myself checking out book 2 before too long.

Great Story

Wonderful story. I love reading Belva Plain. Once I begin a book, it is hard to put down !

To much repetition, doesn't compare to the Carousel.

Fasitating to the end! Couldn't put it down!

I feel like I'm there, that's why I like her books. Not like some that have no plot and uses words that are trivial

Some books I've read I will delete them after 2 or 3 chapters because for me I become bored with out a strong story line.

Belva Plain Does it Again!

This is the first Belva Plain novel that I've read since one of her first ones "Evergreen". I was NOT disappointed. Some authors do NOT "age" well. They tend to really slack off as the years go by. Belva Plain does NOT (happily) fall into that category.

Ok enough to occupy your time.

Story line is predictable, characters are ok. You aren't sure to like them or be ambivalent to all of them. If you are out of books to read it will occupy your time well enough.

Try not to play "dirty" with the script and just get to the plot...which was weak to begin with and then got weaker!

pretty good, but...

Somehow this was recommended to me as a mystery novel. it's not bad, but it definitely isn't a mystery novel. good writing about a good writer, with just a few too many literary asides and in-jokes for me. well performed.
