Bertie has always been my favourite character in this series but I love the way the author interweaves all the characters and their lives. The insights you get into the way they live and their essential character grows with each novel and here we find Bertie maturing whilst still remaining a little boy. Your heart goes out to him as he suffers the indignities his mother forces on him.

I really enjoyed 'Bertie's guide to life and mothers' as I have all of the 44 Scotland Street books. I've just downloaded the next one as it happens! It is difficult to rank this book against other books I've listened to because they are so different, however I love being immersed in life in Scotland Street to the point I feel a kind of sense of loss when they finish.

I love Bertie and his views on life and often laugh out loud and this book did not let me down as he was very prominent throughout.

A Novel That Is Saved By the Writing

I discovered Ellen Gilchrist in 1984 on NPR, was fascinated with her accent and loved her commemtaries. I remember reading LAND OF DREAMY DREAMS, THE ANNUNCIATION and VICTORY OVER JAPAN and being taken by her writing, particularly her short stories. Then she dropped off the radio and I stopping reading her, a little like someone waking up one day and remembering that he used to eat at a favorite restaurant but no longer does, for no particular reason. Now Ms. Gilchrist has written a novel, her first in several years. I bought it after being drawn in by its first few pages that I have reread three times now and find them just as wonderful as upon first reading. The short novel begins with the plans for a society wedding of Winifred Hand Abadie and Charles Christian Kane to have taken place on December 21, 2001 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The

wedding party would be composed of friends and family in their thirties and from the upper middle class. Then Ms. Gilchrist writes in clear prose that appears effortless: "Except the wedding never took place because Charles Kane perished on September 11, 2001, along with three thousand other perfectly lovely, helpless human beings. He had been in the first tower of the World Trade Center, on the fifteenth floor, with two other young brokers, trying to set up a deal to build a new tennis club in Raleigh."

Like the restaurant we revisit-- to continue my trite metaphor-- Ms. Gilchrist isn't as good in this novel as I remembered, and I cannot explain exactly why. She writes about three women in the Hand family, Winifred, Louise and Olivia. The narrative jumps back and forth. I thought at first the story would be Louise's since it begins with her as first person narrator. Then the third person narrator takes over-- at least for a few pages-- with most of the book being about Olivia, who writes for a newspaper in Tulsa. Women in their thirties marry men in their twenties-- which should come as no surprise to Gilchrist fans-- usually after they have managed to get themselves with child without much effort on anyone's part. The men are gung-ho about the military.

A intricate look at what makes a relationship tick

read Julia Glass' Chairs in the Rafters last winter, and loved it. I just went back and re-read it. It's a quick read, the way a Kindle Single should be, but it encompasses a lot of feeling and depth and a whole lifetime of emotion.

Chairs in the Rafters starts when our narrator has left her husband for a passionate summer with Nick, the love of her life, in order to decide if she should leave her husband for good. Her decision is made on a trip to New Jersey to visit Nick's best friend and his wife, and a dinner party which seals her fate. The party enchants her into seeing infinite possibilities with Nick, causing her to leave her marriage.

The rest of the story unfolds through the narrator's relationship with Nick's best friend, a friendship in its own right. It is a realistic look at monogamy; the give and take, the trade-offs and the compromises that make any relationship work, and how our friendships and acquaintances affect those relationships.

Julia Glass is an incredible writer with a real gift of emotional detail. In this little book she covers a whole life, honing in on the pivotal points that can bolster or undermine a relationship. Everytime I read her, I'm left to wonder if this is a slice of her life. I guess that's what good fiction, and a good writer, should do.

Just ok

The characters are always thinking they know what they want, but at same time second guessing what others want and their motives. Not the most entertaining nor enjoyable to read. This short book spans at least 15 years of time.

Wanting More

I chose four stars because I felt a kingship with the characters of this well written story. The reason for not choosing five... I wanted the story to go on so I could know how their stories played out.

Felt a Little Cheated

I have enjoyed this author's writing, so had high expectations. It is a realistic, thought provoking story of modern relationships, but it left me feeling as if I had read a trial balloon for a novel yet to be written.

Such a wonderful story .. one of those ones you want everyone to read. Couldnt stop telling hubby about every chapter!!

Claire early 40's just wants to run away. However, she does not get far before she realises that she is already forgetting where she lives.

Thanks to a faulty gene passed down from her dad who also suffered with the same, Claire has early on set Alzheimers. Her favorite colour is red & her husband buys her a red journal to start her record of fading memories.

This book is narrated by Claire, her daughter Caitlin, her mother Ruth & her husband Greg. You get such an insight into AZ & an insight to how it effects the family. There are sad parts, touching parts and very funny parts. My fav. is a twist which involves her husband which is so beautiful.

You must get this book!!

Heart wrenching

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this story. the characters were people you could really visualise and care about.Although it involves a sad subject (early dementia) the story had a lot of hope and humour and dealt with a difficult subject in a thought provoking and sensitive manner

So sad

I normally enjoy very much Ms Rowan Coleman's books but this one was far too sad for me. I understand it is an interesting insight on what it can means to have in your family a person suffering from Alzheimer but I really found it hard to bear hearing about the fading link berween husband and wife due to the illness, though the author found a very clever twist to eventually uplift the feeling of utter sadness I had regarding that situation. It is not a bad book at all, and the performances are excellent, it is just a bit tough for me. But it may well not be for you.

One not to miss.

Wonderful human, personable and insightful tale - handling very difficult condition and circumstances in very real way. Being well constructed and structured the reader is gently guided through the chaotic, uncontrollable consequences of such a terrible, tragic condition - and from various family members' perspective.

An emotional and satisfying book. Unreservedly recommend.

Funny, fun

Funny, fun, the entire series is well worth the read. The writing is wonderful, the stories engaging without being terribly heavy. And while we always know who dunnit, getting there is a lot of fun.

MTF does Jane Austen and Vampires!!

I've been a fan of Michael Thomas Ford for years. I've read all his other books and his Miss-Austen-as-a-vampire books are as obviously well-researched. All of Mr. Ford's fiction is enjoyable even when dealing with less-than-pleasant topics. His Jane is as dry and funny as any true Austen fan would imagine her. Her being a vampire in the 21st century is just the icing on the cake.

Jane Vows Vengenance: Enjoyable

There are several in the series, "Jane Vows Vengenance: A Novel" is number 3. I enjoy the book. I enjoy reading Jan Austen and the author Michael Thomas Ford does an excellent job mimicking her style. The stories flow every well, are original and just plain enjoyable. After reading more serious novels, it is wonderful to turn to the Ford series for some lighthearted fun. Hope there is a fourth.

Not my style

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This book was totally not my style. Not that it was badly written, but I simply couldnt connect with any of the characters. On paper, Leigh Fielding seems like a fun grown-up, but in fact shes rather annoying, and is way too glib. I really couldnt relate to the flippant manner she went about her life. This smart-alecky attitude started to irritate me after the first 100 pages. And what about the authors anus fixation? What was that ABOUT?

In short this is the story about Leigh Fielding who decides to have her life back after having spent the past five years on dialysis and then finally getting a kidney transplant. With her new-found vitality (and donor Larrys kidney) in tow, Leigh hits the road for an excursion that will carry her from Wisconsin to California, with a few stops in between: Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, the Rockies, Las Vegasand a memorable visit to thank donor Larrys family for the second chance.

Honestly, I wish Leigh would have shut up once in a while, during this trip, and let the reader enjoy the scenery in what could have been a great road-trip! Nope, this book was not for me.

poignant fable about a throubled 13 year old girl on the run!

I liked this book very much, though it is more a fable than a story to be taken literally. However, the often super hyperbolic writing and not all that believable plot situations does not detract from the hard and depressing truths about throw a way kids born into dysfunctional families, who are left to raise themselves and often end up running away from home. As I said this story of the adventures of a super precocious 13 year old runaway is best read as a modern day fairy tale, and like fairy tales contains deep insights and meaning, even if the plot twists are not always all that believable.

One critique is that sometimes the stream of consciousness of the forced to grow up tough and fast insightful, wise beyond her years, 13 year old heroine, is written in too much of an adult syntax and vocabulary that seems contrived and imposed upon the 13 year old character by the author, rather than finding a genuine precocious, intelligent 13 year old "voice" where the same insights could be expressed in a more age appropriate manner. The metaphoric language attributed to the main character is just too adult like, literate and sophisticated for a troubled thirteen year old kid, no matter how precocious and bright.

These criticisms do not however detract from holding the reader's attention as we follow the harrowing journey of this throw a way unappreciated kid or stop one from rooting for her to survive the treacherous encounters she goes through on her hellish odyssey.

On a larger scale this story highlights the plight of thousands of runaway teenage girls from dysfunctional families who are too often preyed upon by pathological and exploitative adults.

So good!

I was drawn into this book right away and became attached to each and every character. I honestly didn't want the book to end so much so that I stopped reading it for a few weeks because I didn't want it to be over. I look forward to reading more by this author. I have The Sometimes Daughter on my kindle to read next.

The Have and Have-Nots

Bethany and her supportive and loving family, the exception being her bi-polar sister Tracy, live an unassuming and happy life in Indiana. Every summer Bethany, her mom and dad and 3 sisters travel to West Virginia to visit relatives. For want of a better description, they are "hillbillies" and their life style is off-the-track. Reana Mae, one year younger than Bethany, bonds with her in the early 1960's. Reana Mae, by today's standards, is an abused and neglected child and the Wylie family from Indiana realizes this and value Bethany's friendship with her cousin. There are good folk and unsavory ones residing in these hills of West Virginia and as the years go by Bethany realizes that Reana Mae has passed her in physical maturity, but lacks mental maturity.Reana Mae at the tender age of 11 "falls in love" with Caleb and takes to sexual activity quite easily to please Caleb. Down the road the Wylie family takes Reana Mae under their wing and brings her to Indiana to live with them. Thus, Reana Mae leaves behind her abusive mother, Jolene, and absent father, Bobby Lee, to start life anew in Indiana. The ensuing years are full of love and woe for everyone and it is hard to imagine a happy ending for all. Bethany is wise beyond her years, Helen and Jimmy Wylie are good people and surrogate parents for Reana Mae and all the other people appearing in this novel make you either love them or dislike them. The negatives with this storyline are the relationships between the men and women and I had to re-read various sections to understand who was related to who. Also, the ending came upon the reader so fast, in the year 1982, and the finale was just 3 pages. I would have liked Ms.

I Love The Dream Series! Dreamy!

If you could sum up Dream Doctor in three words, what would they be?

I would sum up Dream Doctor in three words: exciting, suspenceful, and enjoyable.

I liked the entire story. It has a perfect continuation from Dream Student, the first book in the series. It has great flow and a very good storyline. What I liked best was that Sara knows whose dreams she is seeing and is able to help the people in her dreams. I like the way she is able to help Margaret, her friend Janet's mother and also Dr. Morris who isn't anyone's favorite doctor but still...

Have you listened to any of Heather Jane Hogans other performances before? How does this one compare?

The only other of Heather Jane Hogans performances I've listened to were from this series but I love her in this. She has a delightful, soft voice with perfect flow.

I really enjoy this series. It's cleverly written and wonderfully narrated. I received this audiobook free of charge in exchange for an unbiased review.

The narrator, Heather Hogan made this book pop.

Ok overall, this book might be even better than book one in the series. Which, as most readers knows, is really not the norm. However, I can see how the author is growing, the story line is better plotted. The pacing is extremely well done. The characters keeps growing in this book and the world building is very well done.

The performance of Heather Hogan really added so much to this story. Especially the scene changes from the waking to the dream world is done with a clear and non negotiable twist.

The world building of a woman in medical school is brilliant. No glossing over, no hours and hours of free time to do as she wishes, no instead this woman hardly has time to turn around twice without regretting the wasted seconds. I loved the reality that was brought in by the author in the setting of the plot.

Can't wait for the next one

This is one of the funniest series I have created. Professor Alison Bergeron hosts a birthday party for her twin stepdaughters. The girlsreceive $10,000 from their estranged uncle, Chick. He of course is murdered and Allison reluctantly gets involved. This book has serious character development and I wonder if it was the last in the series. If so, it was great while it lasted. If there is another book in the future it will only be funnier and have lots of complications.

Great series

Loved the last book on this series but why did it have to end? I'll miss Alison and her misadventures.
