Very enjoyable listen

This was a bit of a happy surprise for me; I bought the book because I needed to use up a credit before I lost it, and I generally enjoy Dick Hill's narration.

The story itself is a bit thin, as is character development, but the book as a whole just...works.

I liked all of the characters, even the evil ones, and enjoyed the setting and the story a great deal.

I've listened to the book three times since I bought it last year, and that's kind of my litmus test for 4 or more stars; the more times I listen to it, the more stars it gets.

I loved being given, even if by fiction, the history of the southern Louisiana people, bayous and the intrusion of oil companies into that territory and the effect they have had on the environment and the way the people of that area have had to adjust and change their way of subsistence.

What about Dick Hills performance did you like?

This is my first Ken Wells "listen". I thought he had an excellent way of presenting facts and wrapping a fictional story around them.

A gorgeous book.

I really loved this story despite not usually being a fan of the fiction-meets-religion genre.

There were lots of surprises that had me smiling and wanting more!

The narrator was a little hard to get used to at first but did improve, finally leaving pauses between chapters and character changes towards the end.

Well worth listening too.

keeping faith

This is a very interesting and well written book but the recording is appalling. The actress reads in a monotone, there is not much difference between the voices, just a non ending drone. What is more, there is absolutely no pause between paragraphs, so one strand of the story blends into another and sometimes I have just lost the tread as i thought one character was speaking when the story had jumped on to another!!! hard to follow and not so relaxing.

could have been done better

I love Jodi Picoult and her stories, and I loved reading this one on paper, however the narrator was very very quiet throughout the whole book and there didn't seem to be any pause between a change of scenes in the book.

I know that this isn't necessarily the narrator's fault, however it made it very confusing. I feel like there could have been a better job done.

Ezra Knight - The narrator - yummy :)

This story was very good and it kept my attention BUT I must admit.... I LOVE the voice of Ezra Knight! I wish more audiobooks were read by him..... Back to the story.... It has a very good ending and the story was interesting.... I could not stop listening to it! (It helped with that sexy voice of Ezra Knight too! LOL)

Wow!

Wow - this book was "deep". It had lots of drama, sex and humor if you can believe that. Ezra Knight is an awesome narrarator. He gave each character their individual persona and pulled you into this book. The plot was very intriguing and satisfying. I found myself laughing a lot and being shocked the rest of the time. Brace yourself for a roller coaster read!

Just Excellent

Normally, I only listen to my audiobooks when I am on the road or waiting for an appointment. With this book, I just had to bring the MP3 player inside of my home and listen to this story at every opportunity. We need more of these Freddie Lee Johnson books. Just Excellent

Great Story!

This was really a great story and shows what can happen when we take matters into our own hands all in the name of 'revenge'. And the main character, Denmark, finds out the hard way exactly what that means. I love Freddie Lee Johnson's books. They keep you on the edge of your seat.

Gaping holes left by poor abridging

I read the book many years ago and the characterisation was superb. Tommy Lynley's longing for his lost love jumped out of the pages as did Barbara Havers' 'diamond in the rough' carapace.

This abridgement stripped all of that away and jumped choppily from one scene to another with the barest of cohesion. Characters were bit parts and a great first introduction to Lynley and Havers was cheapened as a result.

Please, do edit out the St James' though- the series is weakened by their two dimensional presence...

Disappointing - Terribly

Having thoroughly enjoyed three other offerings in the Inspector Lynley series I had all I could do to wade through this quagmire to conclusion. In fact, I did bail following the result on the criminal aspect was made boringly clear, leaving unfinished the resolution of the myriad of personal matters that really seemed the driving force to the story. In truth I would regard it closer to a gothic love story than a crime novel. I give it two stars only because, as usual, Ms. George's prose is well crafted, but this effort will terminate my interest in the Lynley saga.

Accordingly I have little to add except to say that the first death/murder, does not take place until the 24% range, the second around 44% and a third incident well into the 60's. Hardly riveting or nail biting as, in between, we are lulled into tedium by being exposed, at great length, to extended family issues that do not embellish or enrich our knowledge of the core characters except to make them less professionally competent, and less noble. For that matter, Havers is virtually non-existent and is not teamed with Lynley in her brief appearance. And most vexing was the manner in which civilians played an active roll in what little police work was under review - totally out of previous character and well beyond any reasonable expectations of how Scotland Yard operatives would conduct their business.

A Good "Prequel"

Although this is not the first book in the series, it takes place first in time, and as other reviewers have mentioned, does give background to Lynley's, Simon's Deborah's, and Helen's relationship and helps to explain some of the tensions between them in the first book. I would recommend this book to anyone reading the Lynley series for insight into the relationship of the main characters. For example, in this book, Lynley and Deborah are engaged to be married, but both Deborah and Simon are suffering with what each of them thinks is unrequited love. Barbara Havers is in this book only incidentally but it was nice to see her surface (albeit briefly) in her usual role of opposition to anything gentry. "A Suitable Vengeance" is a good story, but I gave it 4 stars because it dragged a bit in my opinion. While the story does have an engaging murder, I felt the tale was more focused on the four main characters. Some reviews said that the characters were "too into themselves". I can see where those reviewers are coming from, and I agree that sometimes some of them were a little whiney or too self-flagellating, I think the reason is because this book seemed, to me, intended to be more about the main characters and the development of their relationships than the story if a murder. Still a "must-read" for any fan of the Lynley series.

Number 4 is another great work

Elizabeth George is one of the greatest mystery writers that I am proud to call a fellow American. The fact that she writes about mysteries set in England should not keep you from reading her work.

heart achingly beautiful

This was the most beautifully written book I've read in a while, and there is no one I can think to recommend it to. I wish I remembered where I heard of it initially. It's about a girl who can raise the dead. The book has heavy Christian overtones, which would be a turn off for a lot of people, but also a cynical view of religion, which would be a turn off for those not offended by the overtones. But the writing was just heart-achingly beautiful and the ending literally left me dumbfounded.

What was that?

I listened to this based on a review in Bookmarks magazine. Maybe this is a book that needs to be read, not heard. Maybe I just didn't get it. I don't know ... it just seemed so random, the story so scattered. The description doesn't really describe the true essence of the book, it's not just a charming, life in a small town disrupted by the death of a neighbor story.

Despite all of that, I was kept interested only by how well it was written. The best written non-story I've ever listened to. Nice descriptions and beautiful observations.

I'm glad it was only seven hours, though.

I tried!

I've tried and tried to get into this book, but it just seems to endlessly ramble with descriptions of the characters in the town. While the descriptions are engaging, for the life of me I can't seem to find a story line to follow and find my condentration wandering in mid-listen. I'm really rather torn, since the characterizations are interesting, and in general I feel like I want to like it, but it continually falls short. Definitely not a read for everyone, buyer beware! Make sure to listen to the sample, at least it gives you an idea of what it's like. It doesn't get much more interesting than that. The rather drone-like tone of the narrator does little to help the situation.

Worth the Listen

The font on this library hardback is too small. I made it through the first chapter and it looks to be a good book. Put in a request for the large-print or audio version at the library. Requested that it be available to Kindle at Amazon.

Heart breaking, hopeful, and brilliant writing.

I loved this book. As a mother who lost a child, I found it authentic, unbearably sad, but also redemptive. The heroine, Emelia, was maddening in her inability to empathize with her five year old stepson, but also lovable with her wit and sarcasm. Her anger was hard to bear at times, but I remember my own so well after my child died 22 years ago.

It is an ode to motherhood, the tragedies of divorce and infidelity, and the ability of us all to bond with one another. Highly, highly recommend it but it is not for the faint of heart or for those unwilling to face the unbearable loneliness of grief

The narrator is wonderful -- a perfect match for the character and the tone.

Sweet--interesting psychological insights

I enjoyed this novel..the narrator is fantastic, and captures each character perfectly, particularly little William. I found it a bit depressing, but realistic, and appreciated the wise insights into human relationships that the tale provided. All in all, a worthwhile and entertaining read.

Wonderfrul

This was a wonderful story and beautifully read. As a stepmother, I could identify. Though it was humorous, I also found myself with a lump in my throat several times.

Good story

This was a good story about marriage and motherhood, especially for us neurotic women - gave me something to relate to. The story was very good but some of the bits became rambling, but they helped to define the idiosyncrasies of the characters so they we worth getting thought most times.

Truly awful

I read/listen voraciously, almost never quit. I've tried this twice, and it's not worth the effort. In fact, as a reader I think the writing is insipid, and as a listener I hate the narrator. As a woman lawyer, I hate the main character. Don't waste money/credits/time. Have you read Cutting for Stone? Now that's a treat...
