    Five Stars
    Good story for kids.
    my son loves it
My 7 year old is into aviation, but I liked this book (and so did he) as a way to relate famous flyers to the children they once were, at the age my son is now. This is the kind of book kids will learn history from, when it is interesting and relevant to them. It also discusses what qualities he had as a person, from the time he was young, that allowed him to succeed at what he enjoyed. My son enjoyed it very much.
    boy pioneer!
In keeping with the Centennial of Flight -- Rebeccasreads recommends this book as a look at how Eddie Rickenbacker, an Ohio farm boy with Swiss roots, grew up to become a World War 1 Flying Ace, a founder of our commercial aviation, a pioneer racecar driver & the owner of no less than the famed Indianpolis 500 Speedway.

©2006 Geoffrey McSkimming; (P)2006 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
    Editorial Reviews:
Geoffrey McSkimming mixes, history, mythology, geography, and humor in his 16th Cairo Jim story, sending the well-known archaeologist and less-renowned poet from his home in the Valley of the Hairdressers. Jim and friends have to work quickly to derail Captain Neptune F. Bones greedy plan to snatch up all the worlds gold. McSkimmings quirky performance of this high-spirited, humorous adventure celebrates each twist, with Bone himself being on something of a "wild goose chase", as he seeks a young Greek woman who he believes will be his link with the mythological "Midas touch".
    Critic Reviews:
"Grab your pith helmet and join Cairo Jim on a pair of rollicking adventures sure to tickle the funny bone of young and old alike." (AudioFile Magazine)
"When you tire of stories about the places and people you know, try the witty word play and over-the-top adventure of Cairo Jim for an outrageous tonic." (The Age)

    Not one of our favorites...
I listened to this with my two children, ages 10 and 7. It held their attention, but was not one of our favorites.
I think the biggest problem was the vocabulary. Our family enjoys words, and my children have a pretty good vocabulary, but the book seemed to go out of its way to choose the most obscure possible word for any given meaning. There were also some British/Aussie slang that made things difficult.
We had not read any of the previous stories, and so it took a while to become familiar with the characters. The story was so-so. There were some interesting mythological references, but not a lot of action, and there were some unecessary crudities (toes bitten off, randy satyrs).
In short, we won't be buying any more in the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
Emmy Award-winning storyteller Bobby Norfolk brings his electrifying energy to world folktales (African, Eastern European, Appalachian, and Irish traditions), to the delight of all ages. From Anansi, the African trickster, to Jack, the bumbling, lucky, persevering Everyman of traditional stories, Norfolk's characters instruct while they entertain.
    (P)2002 August House Publishers, Inc.
    Editorial Reviews:
Norfolk's voice commands attention as he speaks, shouts, and vocalizes various sound effects - from the animals in "The Bremen Town Musicians" to the sounds of the blacksmith's shop in "Wicked John and the Devil." Norfolk's strength is in moments of wild humor, but he successfully conveys the emotion in stories that are more serious. These strengths are brought to bear the 5 well-known stories that entertain and have a strong moral center, making the collection ideal for young and old alike.

    This guy's hilarious!
I just borrowed this from the local library, and after playing it once for my five year old son on the way to school, I'm on a mission to track down more audiobooks by Billy Norfolk. His storytelling is very dramatic and funny - we were both laughing out loud at his version of The Bramen Town Musicians. It's fun for my kid to hear adults really getting into the story and goofing it up, just like he LOVES to do.
I had actually read that same story to my boys a couple of months ago, but my version wasn't NEARLY as entertaining. After hearing this guy, I've got a new role model - I'm going to try to make my storytelling as much fun as his.
Emmy Award Winner I could listen to all day!
I first experienced Bobby Norfolk's incredible storytelling at the National Storytelling Conference where he was clearly a star. Then I learned of his Emmy Awards and extensive stage work. This recording is fantastic.
Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears
This is one of the best storytelling CD's I have ever bought! Bobby Norfolk is a delightful storyteller, and I will be bringing him to our middle school this Fall to share his stories.
not what I was looking for
only one short cd that cost as much as a novel, and the whole thing was much to silly for my taste.

    Here we all love it!
My girls (age 3 and 4) and I read the first book in this series together and they couldn't wait to begin the second! I was a little nervous that the second book wouldn't live up to the first, but it most definitely did! Tomie dePaola has such a wonderful way of describing things to his young (and old!) readers...and evidently he has plenty of fun and misadventures to share! The fact that my very young children so thoroughly enjoyed this book is a testament to the engaging writing style and the timeless, meaningful topics winding through the chapters. There are sweet illustrations on the pages that definitely grabbed the kids' attention (they wonder "Why is he doing that?" or "Is the mommy mad?" so I say, "Let's read and find out!") We all love this series. (Though I have to admit when a new book arrives, I sometimes secretly read ahead!)
    Thank you, Mr. dePaola
Thank you, Mr. dePaola, for all of your well-written children's literature. My students really enjoy all of the 26 Fairmount Avenue books. This one is no exception. These really are great for transitioning students into reading chapter books.
    Five Stars
    Wonderful book
Great easy chapter book for boys
My second grade son enjoyed this book so much he read it in two days. He related to the story because it was about a boy near his age and his trials and tribulations about a younger sister and school etc. Highly recommended.
An Autobiography in Touch with the Magic of Childhood
What makes Tomie de Paola such an endearing (and enduring) children's book writer is the fact that he has never lost touch with the magic of childhood. An autobiography that embodies this quality is bound to appeal to children, especially as Mr. de Paola relates this slice-of-life story from the perspective of a young boy growing up. In this installment of the 26 Fairmount Avenue series, Tomie recounts the arrival of his new baby sister, Maureen; to this day, he is extremely close to his younger sibling. The book, with de Paola's customary gentle wit, provides young readers and writers with an admirable example of the art of autobiography. The author's charming illustrations complement the lyrical text.

    Editorial Reviews:
Authors Felice Arena and Garry Lyon also perform this second installment in their acclaimed Specky Magee series, which follows protagonist Simon Magee as he strives to become a huge Aussie Rules superstar. In Specky Magee and the Great Footy Contest, Simon enters a major contest in hopes of becoming an international sports ambassador, while simultaneously grappling with the big issue of a bully on the field: old enemy Derek "Screamer" Johnson.
Arena and Lyon make a great team, putting in performances that highlight the action and excitement of the sport central to this series, while simultaneously maintaining consistent pacing and imbuing each character with bright, distinctive vocal personalities.

Fantastic book but there was a part in the middle that I found quite boring the start and the end were great though
    Good reading
Easy to read with twists and turns in the story. I would highly recommend this book for kids of all ages!
    Great book
Ok the main thing I liked was the name screamer and some bits were funny so I gave it four stars.
    Specky rules!
This is a good book for kids who like sports novels. If you don't know anything about Australian football it's a little confusing at first but you get it pretty quick. The other plots besides the footy are about his friends and his parents, and they are really interesting. And not common in kids' books, so that's cool.
There are three books in this series and they are co wrote by an ex footy star and his childhood friend who is a writer. They do funny introductions in the beginning of the books so don't forget to read the paragraphs where they make fun of each other a bit.
    SENSATIONAL SPECKY ! ! ! !
I thought Specky Magee and the great footy contest was a great book, it was a good read because once i read the first page i couldnt get enough of it and i read it till the end. It is a great book about Australian rules football but you dont need to be an aussie to understand it because the Australian rules football isnt the only part of the book, it had a lot of different plots. I liked this book because it wasnt all about football it had the relationships Secky had with his Family, Friends and enemys. Overall it was a great book, i reccomend it for kids between the age of 7 and 13. I give this sensational book a rating of 5 stars.

    Huge Waste of Money!
This is a wonderful story but this printing is practically worthless. This "book" is just a cheap printing of the document that is available free online from the Gutenberg Project. At least the on-line version has illustrations. The print is so small it is practically unreadable. The printer did not even bother to add page numbers. Do not waste your money!! Read the book online. It is much easier to read from the computer than this printing.
    Just OK
I did not read this as a child, so my review is not tinged with nostalgia. I thought this was just OK. I thought Lloyd was one of the most annoying children I have ever met. I was told that I would not like it because it was quite racist. I didn't think it was racist as much as reflective of the way things were in that place at that time.
I think if you read this as a child you will like reading it again. Other than that, it's just OK.
This is a good children's story but it is a product of the ...
This is a good children's story but it is a product of the period in which it was written. It uses term for black servants and children that are offensive in todays society.
    Five Stars
    Great book
    A childhood favorite.
This is the book I remembered from my childhood. Beware, however, it has very racist sayings and should be monitored with children.

Ian Thomson's regal yet approachable tone perfectly suits Helme Heine's lighthearted children's tale of a king faced with a interesting quandary: Which of three hens is the most beautiful? Dotty has the most striking feathers, Stalky has the most glamorous legs, and Plumy has the most breathtaking crest, so the King finally decides that the one who lays the perfect egg will magically be transformed into a princess.
The clucking of hens sprinkled throughout coupled with Thompson's engaging delivery makes this audiobook a breezy, enjoyable listen.
