Understanding providence
Not a day passes without calamity, so the question before us is where is God during the event? If this question has arisen in your mind, you will find RC Sproul's book When Worlds Collide an excellent, honest, passionate antidote to understand this question from a biblical worldview.
A mortal blow to relativism
On 9/10, the idea of relativism was running wild, defended and embraced widely. Sproul points out that 9/11 was a "mortal blow to relativism" showing the reality of evil. Prior to unpacking his argument, he highlights that "nothing can move, nothing can live, nothing can exist apart from the power of God." This basic understanding of God's providence continues throughout his writing.
God's providential rule
While Sproul never contributes evil to God, he says, "Within His providence come both blessing and calamity." This is a foreign concept to many within evangelicalism, not to mention the world. This idea that "for God to let things happen that do happen He must choose to allow them to take place" maybe mind riveting for some, but understood correctly can bring great comfort. God's providential ordination exists in all of life. Consequently, the understanding of "why" God ordains events such as 9/11 Sproul says, "I cannot be glib in my reply." Although one can never emphatically answer the "why" question, comfort is found when understanding "nothing that ever happened is senseless." This is a comforting point in the mist of the unknown. While we are limited in our understanding of events, a sovereign God can turn "tragedies into supreme blessings."
Understanding God's mercy and wrath
The final two chapters highlight God's mercy and wrath. The idea of God being a God of wrath is in faint view within many circles, but God's just judgment and divine mercy both exist. Both of these attributes are found at the foot of the cross. The wrath of the father was poured out on the son for sin and the mercy of God is demonstrated through faith and repentance in Christ alone for salvation. As Sproul points out, "He is, among other things, a God of wrath. To be sure, he is also a God of mercy. But the idea of mercy is empty if He has no capacity for wrath."
While this book is profitable for small groups, it seems to cater toward personal study or teaching preparation. In less than 100-pages, you will obtain a basic understanding of God's providence. Obviously, no one can answer every question on this topic, but this book will provide a solid framework to view calamity. The question is not if calamity will take place, but when. If you are interested in an introductory book to understand this topic, I recommend this book. Even more important than understanding the topic, this book will help guard your heart from shaking your fist at God when calamity comes and you do not completely understand the events.
