Gabriel was standing at his front door, awaiting our arrival with a cup of tea in his hands. He had his story prepared and boy was it a good one. His story starts at the age of 14 when he found himself in Bermingham. He worked any job he could find, including on building sites and factories. Gabriel went on to become a paramedic for over 50 years and has seen all sorts, but it’s the joyful moments we touch on today.

“Where are you from” is a loaded question for Mandy. She was brought up in so many places like London and Nigeria, her parents are from Lebanon. She’s spent her life moving, experiencing different worlds, different cultures. When it came time to have children, she found herself (and her husband) in Ireland. She can see the appeal of bringing up kids here, especially when all their little friends come knocking on the door to ask them out to play.

When Laura first filled out the form to be in this project back in November 2025, she wanted to talk about her new home. It’s a home she had been planning for years, on her parent’s land. She built it with so much love and care, and designed it so perfectly. Her parents live next door, and her Dad would send her photos daily of the progress the builders would make while she was at work. 

When I got around to messaging Laura, I was excited to hear about the house. Life, as we know, can be very cruel. Laura replied to say her Dad, James McIntyre, had just passed away, but that she would still like to take part, to show me the house that her Dad was so proud of, and to honour his memory.

Catherine is on the cusp of something great. A new chapter in her life awaits her, she just needs to jump. Catherine applied to be in this project as she wanted to represent a demographic whom she feels gets the short end of the stick in society. Single people. She knows that when it comes time to write her will, her assets will be taxed heavily, more so than if she were leaving it all to a child or spouse, and where’s the fairness in that? 

I spend our chat trying to convince her to sell all her assets and spend every penny on herself (and her dog, Roxy).

Jean is a gorgeous, chatty soul and a great storyteller. For her whole life she was living with a cluster of tangled up arteries (like balled up Christmas tree lights) right in the centre of her brain. It was only when things started to go a little bit wrong that it became a problem.

Sean didn’t have the easiest start in life. He entered foster care when he was just 10 years old, and instantly had to start advocating for himself. By the age of 15, he had a battle on his hands with the Irish government. He wanted to share his story of foster care online and in the media, but the law prevented him from doing so. Sean went to court and changed the law! 

He’s now a freelance filmmaker and workshop facilitator, making short films and documentaries that highlight the plight of those in society without a voice.

I met Adrian down at the festival, his friend nominated him and told me that he’d be a great shout for the podcast. He wasn’t wrong. 

I met Adrian for a brief chat, not knowing anything about him. What I found was a sweet, soft spoken man, who is extremely passionate about music. He talks so enthusiastically about other musician’s work, which is quite frankly, lovely to see. He’s an artist in an engineer's world, playing guitar and writing songs to ease his soul. 

He’s grieving the loss of his father, Des, who just three weeks ago left this world and by all accounts, sounds like he would have been delightful to chat to as well.

Well, if ever there was a person to say “music is life” it’s Sharon. She has lived what some would consider a “normal life”. Faced with very little job opportunities when she left school in the 80s, she took whatever job was going and was quite content with that. She built a home, raised her kids, but when she was secure and happy, it was time to rediscover her love of music. 

She once considered herself to be a shy person, but since throwing herself into music, she’s anything but. Sharon now goes to sean nós singing workshops, folk music gatherings, and has sung in choirs to 40,000 people.

Emmet is the MC for the weekend down at Hibernacle festival. It's a small, gorgeous gathering of art and music loving folk, so Emmet fits right in. He’s a poet, born and reared in Cabra and is lucky enough to still live there. We had a lovely chat about his work delivering poetry workshops in schools and prisons, as well as what it really means to make a living as an artist in 2026.

If you ever wanted to nerd out about bees, this is the episode for you. We chatted to my pal Mark Earley about his new career change and passion project. He and Kyle started Open Hive and now they keep hives across Ireland. We donned some fetching suits and met the hive out Mark's back garden and learned all about what makes bees so crucial to our world.
