  • Episode 1542: Jean McCarthy / Unpickled & The Bubble Hour
"It doesn't matter if you're not sleeping on a park (bench)…or not driving your kids to school with vodka in your coffee mug…or whatever is your 'I haven't done this, yet.' None of that matters." — Jean on SRN
Jean Greer McCarthy is creator of the wildly-popular, recovery blog, Unpickled; a cohost of recovery podcast, The Bubble Hour; and a monthly columnist for addiction.com.
Sober since 2011, Jean lives a very active life in Alberta Canada.
    NOTE
Once again, Chris ignored the common wisdom to "never meet your idols and/or never podcast with your influences" and asked Jean to join us. She graciously accepted.
I would also like to note that Jean authored the beautifully powerful sentiment that I have used to guide me as I participate in the #RecoveryFriendlyWeb:
Resist the urge to be entertained and instead let yourself be moved. Something beautiful has been happening here. Maybe it’s time you knew. —Jean / Unpicked

  • Episode 1541: The Gang Talks About Social Anxiety. And Depression
"You start to realize just how many (social activities) are really just about getting super hamskied."—MATT
The Sober Squad™ does not boldly go where many have gone before. And it certainly doesn't go where many currently are. And if they did it would be in a highly agitated state. As a matter of fact, some of the Sober Squad™ is just going to hang out at home and maybe watch a movie.

  • Episode 1540: Jo Sullivan / Counselor & Fund Raiser
"I was one of those drinkers that blacked out the first time I drank. I thought I wouldn't drink again. Three days later I did."—Jo on SRN
Jo is just beginning her story in recovery and most of what she’d normally put in a bio happened during years of active addiction, but they did contribute to who she is today.
Jo has been in the fundraising world for most of her career. She’s worked for everyone from the ASPCA (have you SEEN that Sara McLachlan commercial—you can thank her) to MADD (ironic isn’t it?). Her background gives her a different perspective on addiction. Jo sees the movement as early advocates saw HIV/AIDS or international child hunger. She asks herself questions about where the movement fits in the share of donor giving already so competitive or how to break out of the stigma and mainstream recovery support much like Susan G. Komen demanded we stop mourning cancer and celebrate survival.
But for now, Jo’s just a middle-age woman in recovery who went back to school in her 40’s, finished an Addiction Counseling program and now works with young men who are battling this disease every day. She believes there’s nothing like seeing the devastation and the miracles up close.
She doesn’t blog, our show will be her first ever telling her story publically but she is 100% committed to whatever she can do go give the disease a mainstream platform and help people who want to find the place to recover outloud. Starting with 6 guys in a house in Maryland.

  • Episode 1538: Scott Magnuson & Shaaren Pine / Torn Together
"I had to figure out a way to be (sober) around (alcohol) constantly."—Scott (restauranteur) on SRN
Torn Together is a memoir, written by recovering alcoholic and addict husband, Scott Magnuson, and codependent wife, Shaaren Pine.
The memoir chronicles Scott’s addiction as his illness infects everyone around him, his eventual treatment, and the recovery process the whole family undertakes.
It is also the story of The Argonaut, one of revitalized H Street NE’s first restaurants, the struggle to get off the ground, rebuild after a terrible fire, and to keep going as the family is falling apart.
Together, Scott and Shaaren run two businesses, have created a non-profit—Restaurant Recovery™—, serve on two boards, and are raising their daughter, Ara.
Scott is continuing his career in the restaurant industry, and, through their non-profit, he and Shaaren are dedicated to helping others out of addiction's darkness. The mission of Restaurant Recovery is to provide comprehensive solutions—including finding and funding treatment—to address addiction and its effects on restaurant employees, their families and the restaurant industry.
They live in Washington, DC, and this is their first book.

  • Episode 1535: Sean Paul Mahoney / Playwright & Humorist
"As it progresses it's like an animal that you have to take care of all the time…and you really can't do anything else."
    —SPM on SRN
Sean has been a writer, humorist and storyteller since he learned how to speak. He didn't actually start getting paid for these things, however, until he got sober in 2009. Since then Mahoney's two original comedies, Casual Encounters/Missed Connections and The Singing Room enjoyed successful sold-out runs in Denver in 2012 and 2013, respectively. A collection of Mahoney's one-act comedies, A Fairy's Tales debuted last summer while other short works continue to be submitted, rejected and sometimes even accepted by playwrighting festivals around the country.
Mahoney and his husband are the co-founders of Horse & Cart, a theatrical production company dedicated to new works. Mahoney's writing can next be seen in Your Heart is a Radio, a monologue mixtape debuting this fall and in a collection of his writing about recovery entitled, Sparkleholic to be released in 2016. To keep his lights on, Mahoney works as a social media manager and freelance copywriter.
Like most addicts/alcoholics Mahoney is best enjoyed in small doses so following him on Twitter, @seanpaulmahoney, or reading his blog, urtheinspiration.wordpress.com, is probably the way to go.
