Enter community radio, one of the only remaining people-powered, community-controlled corners of the media landscape. Since April 2017, Forward Radio WFMP Louisville has been broadcasting and podcasting the voices of the people at 106.5fm and http://forwardradio.org. Radio has long been one of the most accessible and effective forms of storytelling and information sharing. The exploding popularity of podcasting demonstrates the enduring power of audio. Ever since Louisville’s social justice and sustainability focused community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP went on-air in April 2017, UofL faculty, staff, and students have been active collaborators with community members from across the region in generating thought-provoking, provocative, and engaging programming. This community service takes place both behind the microphones and behind the scenes as volunteers help sustain the station with community outreach at public events, volunteer recruitment, training, fundraising, administration, and engineering. Over the years, the station has also provided a megaphone for countless UofL faculty, staff, students, and community partners to share their knowledge, research, and passions with the broader community through guest appearances, one-time Access Hour programs, and podcasts. This round table, featuring UofL faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners who have all been involved in the station in various ways over the years, offered a rich discussion about the power of community radio to educate, inform, transform and unite our city. Listen in as we share our stories of how this work has made a difference in our own lives and scholarship, while creating positive change in our community. This week we chat with Kelsey Madges, an Ohio middle school librarian and book lover. We talk about the highs and the lows of working in school libraries. If you’re like us, it’s been almost 40 years since you were a middle schooler and lots has changed for kids and the librarians who help them, such as the use of Chromebooks in classes and the current prevalence of book bans. But Kelsey is a book lover and supporter through and through. In fact she admits that she enjoys almost everything she reads. Your host, Justin Mog, welcomes to the studio Lauren Kallmeyer, Director of Kentucky Heartwood (http://kyheartwood.org), which has been protecting and defending Kentucky's public wildlands since 1992. They have stopped logging on thousands of acres of Daniel Boone National Forest and continually work to protect old growth forests and preserve habitat for rare, threatened, and endangered species. Lauren Kallmeyer served on Kentucky Heartwood's Forest Council before transitioning into the director role in 2022. She brings 16 years of experience in corporate America in various leadership, project management, and communications-related roles, and is thrilled to leave the corporate environment and return home to the nonprofit world and her activist roots. She has led several nonprofit boards, has served in AmeriCorps, and has worked as a park ranger at two National Parks. Lauren is also a clinical herbalist and owns a community-based herbalism practice, Resilient Roots (https://resilientrootsky.com/). She consults with people on how to use medicinal herbs to improve their health, teaches educational workshops, and grows medicinal plants on her farm in Berea. Her work as a clinical herbalist includes advocating for the sustainable harvest and conservation of medicinal plants, her farm is a United Plant Savers' botanical sanctuary, and all of this deeply influences her work at Kentucky Heartwood. She is an associate member of the American Herbalists Guild, has an M.S. in Therapeutic Herbalism from Maryland University of Integrative Health, an M.A. in Communication from the University of Louisville, and a B.A. in Anthropology from Centre College. Russia and China are establishing increasingly cordial and cooperative relations. This comes at a time when the United States is losing credibility on the world stage, because we demonstrate so little respect for the sovereignty of other countries or for international law. We have a self-image that says we are the beacon of democracy, but we support anti-democratic regimes all over the world. And the primary test for whether we praise or vilify another country is not whether they respect democracy or human rights, but whether they do things "our way", with "our way" being defined by US corporations and the military industrial complex. While in American culture, you're not allowed to say anything good about these big, bad bogeymen, the objective reality is that they are in many respects better role models than the United States, in terms of their respect for other countries, notwithstanding all the propaganda to the contrary. We can at least listen to what they have to say. That's what this episode is about. We will read through the joint statement issued by President Putin and President Xi Jinping. Let's read what they have to say and then go from there, instead of allowing a corrupt, violent media establishment and political class tell us what to think and how to think.
