One of the all-time great climbers, Pippa York, who rode during the 80s and 90s as Robert Millar, was an inspiration to many a British rider. As a quiet Scot who shied from the limelight, she developed a fearsome reputation in the biggest races, winning three mountainous Tour de France stages and the King of the Mountains jersey in 1984.

In this episode, Pippa joins Bradley and Graham to discuss the mind games of climbing and her indelible link to today’s feature climb, the Col du Tourmalet. One of the most fearsome climbs in the infamous quartet known as cycling’s “Circle of Death,” two of Pippa’s stage wins at the Tour featured the Tourmalet. Here she discusses both, including one in 1989 where she gained revenge against Pedro Delgado, the rider who had taken advantage of a shocking set of circumstances to “steal” the Vuelta d’España title from her four years earlier.

Plus, Pippa and Bradley reflect, with huge emotion and affection, on their time together as coach and protégé, when a teenage Brad used to phone Pippa on her landline and cling to every morsel of information he could from one of his great inspirations.

Ireland’s Stephen Roche remains one of only three men to have won cycling’s triple crown – the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and the UCI World Championships Road Race in the same year.

In this episode he joins Bradley and Graham to talk through his extraordinary achievement in 1987, which included today’s feature climb, the Col d’Aubisque, during The Tour.

Hear how Stephen outwitted rivals who thought they’d beaten him, utilising his love of mind-games and extraordinary heart to destabilise his victims.

He recounts going to war with his own teammate to set up the chance for the Triple Crown, and his embarrassment as wearing a skin-suit, now viewed as a pioneer, that took him to an incredible 1985 win up the Aubisque.

In 2018 Geraint Thomas became just the third Briton to win the Tour de France, joining Sir Brad in that elite group. In doing so he became the first man ever to win a stage up the iconic 21 hairpins of Alpe d’Huez whilst wearing the yellow jersey.

Joining Sir Brad and Graham in the café for this episode, Geraint reveals how he and Team Sky leader, Chris Froome, wrangled over the battle for yellow as he rode for history on the Alpe and tells of another occasion on the climb, “a memory I’ll never forget,” when he clung to the coattails of two of the sport’s all time greats as they battled for supremacy.

Brad's early cycling hero was Tom Simpson. In the 1960s Tom’s name was as well-known to the British public as Bradley was in 2012, having become the first - and still only - Briton to win the Tour of Flanders, aged just 23. Tom was hugely popular, and was even voted Sports Personality of the Year at a time when cycling needed a big name to boost its profile in the UK.

Brad and Tom are interlinked in ways you wouldn’t think possible. From family connections, to their status as British national sporting heroes through their pioneering achievements on two wheels. 

In this episode, Brad and Graham are joined by Tom's nephew, cycling journalist, photographer and publisher Chris Sidwells, to celebrate Tom's career and discuss the tragic events that led to his death just one kilometre from the summit of the brutal climb of Mont Ventoux during the 1967 Tour de France.

Brad reveals how, without Tom, he may never have become a cyclist at all and shares how he paid special tribute to him when he raced the stage in 2009. 

And Brad and Chris debate which cyclist's panache would see them added to the profile of our Ultimate Tour Rider.
