1. What does the name Immanuel mean, as defined by Matthew 1:23?
2. In Isaiah 7, the prophet Isaiah spoke for God to the people of Judah and their king, Ahaz, to challenge their fear before battle. Isaiah lived and prophesied in approximately 740-680 BC. How long would the people of Judah and the readers of Isaiah have to wait for this prophecy to be finally and completely fulfilled?
3. What do the Lord and Isaiah mean by a “sign”? What purpose does a sign serve, both on a roadside and in the Bible? What purpose did the sign of Isaiah 7:14 serve in Joseph’s life, according to Matthew 1?
4. In the Luke 2:22-32 passage, what was Simeon waiting for? What had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit? From the words that he spoke in reaction to seeing the child, after patiently waiting for so long, what did Simeon see in Jesus?
