What is the difference between growing old and becoming an Elder?

In this episode of the Sisters of the Rose Podcast – The Elders Series, we sit down with Michal Maayan to explore one of the most important questions of our time: why do we need to resurrect the role of the Elder?

Together, we explore how modern society has increasingly reduced ageing to a biological process, often overlooking the deeper social, cultural, and spiritual role that Elders have traditionally held within communities.

We ask what happens when someone becomes older, but is never consciously invited into Eldership.

Because being old and being an Elder are not necessarily the same thing.

An Elder is someone who has lived through enough of life's thresholds to carry perspective, wisdom, and experience—and who chooses to offer that wisdom in service of others.

What happens to a society when we lose the rituals that once helped women cross the great thresholds of their lives?

In this episode of the The Sisters of the Rose Podcast – The Elders Series, we sit down with Sister Sally Berg of Mature Eros to explore the ancient rites of passage that once honoured women as they moved through the different stages of womanhood—and what has been lost as many of these traditions have disappeared.

Across cultures, women's transitions were once recognised and witnessed by their communities. From maidenhood to motherhood, through sexuality, partnership, birth, loss, menopause and into elderhood, women were not expected to navigate these profound transformations alone.

They were initiated.

They were witnessed.

They were guided by women who had walked the path before them.

Together, we explore what happens when these initiatory structures disappear and women are left to navigate some of life's most profound transitions without ceremony, community, or Elders to guide them.

Our conversation asks why these ancient roles still matter in the modern world.

What might change if young women had access to women who could guide them through the thresholds of womanhood? What happens when a woman reaches midlife without being consciously initiated into the wisdom of her next chapter? And what becomes possible when mature women are once again recognised not as women who are becoming less relevant, but as Elders carrying wisdom, experience, sensuality, and perspective for the generations that follow?

We explore the importance of reclaiming mature womanhood, the role of the Elder, and the cultural knowledge that can be passed from woman to woman when communities create spaces for witnessing, initiation, and belonging.

At the heart of this conversation is a deeper question:

What happens to women—and to society—when we forget how to honour the thresholds of a woman's life?

Perhaps the answer is not to recreate the past exactly as it was, but to remember what those traditions understood:

Transformation needs witnessing. Women need women. Every threshold deserves to be honoured. And the wisdom of mature women is something society desperately needs.

This conversation also marks the beginning of something new.

In October, the Sisters of the Rose will be launching our Rose Author Elders Circle—a dedicated Author and Rites of Passage programme inviting Elders to consciously step into their next chapter of life.

This is an invitation to honour the life you have lived, reflect upon the initiations that have shaped you, and begin sharing the wisdom you have gathered along the way.

Through the programme, Elders will have the opportunity to tell their story, begin writing their book, share their wisdom through the Sisters of the Rose Podcast, and create a lasting legacy for future generations.

Because becoming an Elder is not simply about growing older.

It is about consciously stepping forward to say:

"I have walked this path. I have learned something along the way. And I am willing to share what I know."

Perhaps this is the rite of passage our culture is ready to remember.

How did one of the most complex spiritual traditions of our time come to be reduced to a single aspect of human experience?

In this episode, we’re joined by Mohini, founder of Evolve Beings and internationally recognized Tantra teacher, to explore one of the most misunderstood spiritual traditions of our time: Tantra.

While often associated in the West with sexuality and intimacy, Tantra is rooted in far more expansive Eastern spiritual, philosophical, and devotional systems. Together, we unpack how this rich and multidimensional path became simplified—and at times distorted—as it moved across cultures.

We begin by exploring Tantra in its traditional context, where it is practiced as a holistic path of awakening. Through meditation, ritual, mantra, breathwork, and energy cultivation, Tantra offers a framework for profound inner transformation and union with the divine.

From there, we examine how Tantra has been interpreted in Western spaces, often reframed through a lens of self-development or sexuality, and what may have been lost in translation along the way.

We also explore the deeper philosophical roots of Tantra, including its connections to Hindu and Buddhist lineages, and the role of discipline, devotion, and initiation in preserving the integrity of these teachings.

A thread that is especially close to our hearts is the resonance between the sacred traditions of India and ancient Egypt. We reflect on how the temple arts of Egypt—through symbolism, ritual, and energetic understanding—mirror key principles found within Tantric teachings, pointing to a shared language of consciousness, embodiment, and inner alchemy that transcends geography and time.

At its essence, this conversation invites a remembering: that Tantra is not simply a practice, but a pathway of refinement—an alchemical process of awakening to the truth of who we are. In its simplest form, this points to Ātman—the true Self, beyond body, mind, and identity.

As a living expression of this work, Mohini will be leading her first retreat in Egypt this September—an immersive journey through sacred temples and energetic gateways, designed to support deep remembrance, activation, and inner transformation.
