Hehkhepri Martin, the designer behind Roll, Bounce, Rock Skate apparel, is a fixture at NYC skating events, with 9 years of skating under his belt this Brooklyn native is talented but understated, smooth rather than showy. In this interview we pick his brain about his creative process from the skaters who inspire him, to how he works through new moves. He shares his take on balancing taking up space with reading the room (or the rink ;-) ) , countering toxic masculinity in skate spaces, how showing up and connecting with people is what it’s all about, and how vital it is to make space for fresh innovative DJs in the rink space. Anxiety was high going into our first interview, but luckily for us Skatewytch is the kind of skater that immediately feels like an old friend. She’s known for her work contributing to DIY skatepark builds, being the first park skater to have her name on a wheel, and her daringly gritty skate style , but as we learn in this interview her grind and work ethic don’t cease there. She shares how her personal experiences growing up led her to center community efforts in everything she does from her work for non profits, to community action and organizing. You’ll hear unmistakable rawness as she opens up about her experiences with the mindf^ck of sponsorship, social media, mental health crises, and wrestling with body image. Ever one to pull herself up by the bootstraps, skating has always catalyzed her forward momentum whether it’s gaining confidence on the derby track or chasing her bliss while touring skate parks by driving cross country.
